Please check the article on: cathnewsusa.com/2011/08/vatican-call-to-formalise-communion-ritual/ Antonio Cardinal Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, encourages Catholics to recieve the Communion while kneeling! He finds it an important sign of adoration that needs to be recovered, and adds, ‘It is to simply know that we are before God himself and that he came to us and that we are undeserving.’ His Eminence also points out that a Catholic receiving the Communion while standing should genuflect or bow profoundly. Interesting! I often feel it is not enough to just approach and receive the Communion reverently. I used to genuflect but lately, and for the silly excuse of not to attract attention, I bow and make a sign of the Cross before stepping to receive the Holy Communion then go back to my seat and kneel. I would love to kneel and worship, it is the real presence of the Almighty God, the Saviour!! Peace, Rina

I would be happy to have the kneeling posture as the norm for receiving Holy Communion for those of us who are physically able.

👍

I’m confused to understand the level of authority that we should attach to this statement. I would normally consider a “Vatican call” to be a formal statement or document issued from Rome, not a remark made to a news agency during an overseas trip. What level of compliance is thus required in respect to the cardinal’s position as Prefect of the relevant Congregation?

You’re bound to absolutely no compliance whatsoever. He was merely expressing his opinion.

I would consider his opinion in the context of his dignity of cardinal, however, any truly binding and authoritative pronouncement from the Vatican will make it clear that the indult is being rescinded.

None at this point. Not every word from his mouth is law. I mean, even the Pope whom we see as supreme and infallible, does not generate canon law at every word from his mouth. Unless he formalizes this in a directive to the whole Church (of course he speaks for the Pope and he really can’t formalize anything without the Pope approving it) then its his opinion.

There is no “indult” for standing to receive Communion.

Yep. This isn’t even an encyclical, apostolic constitution, modification of canon law, or modification of the GIRM.

It’s an opinion, which he’s entitled to have (as is every person who will post on this here thread). There still exists an indult for CITH, and until that changes it will remain a licit and reverent way to receiving the Eucharist.

It’s not a universal allowance and your bishop or pastor may refuse to extend that indult. There are still several strict conditions (can’t deny COTT, no risk of profanity, for example) under which the “indult” applies.

Hi,

Uhhh really silly question. What is an indult?

God bless.

It is basically an allowed exception or specific adaptation to a rule or universal norms. For example, here in the US we have an indult to kneel for the Eucharistic prayer, which the universal norm is to stand except for the consecration.

Here’s more on that story and the Cardinal.

Can someone please explain to me why they’re so against kneeling while they receive their Lord and God?

A Cardinal Prefect’s Statement is the opposite of Just Opinion; It needs to be Respectred and Honored. The Church has The ideal Authority, Not My, Our Opinion. The Cardinal was speaking From Office. 1 Timothy 3:15 :bible1: Think a Judge or Police Officer’s Order is ‘just an opinion’; or a Traffic Ticket?

Preciselly the Opposite! The Cardinal is Prefect of Liturgy, Speaking >> Advising<< From Office. Bowing, Kneeling before Receiving the Holy Eucharist is Tradition which is being brought back, especially by The Holy Father: Kneeling Communion on Tongue Only.

I would love it if receiving the Holy Eucharist while on one’s knees became the norm.

There’s a church that I sometimes go to Mass at when traveling between where I currently live and where my relatives live. It’s a beautiful little Jesuit church and it still has the old Communion rail. I always notice it when I visit and think how sad it is that these are no longer used and that most churches have had them removed completely.

I imagine that were kneeling to become the norm again that it would not only help emphasize the reverence due to our Lord, but also allow us to take just a little more time to contemplate what is happening when we receive Him. The way Communion is handled in most of the parishes I’ve been to is to rush through the Communion line like someone who is in the check out line at the grocery store. Everyone seems to rush to get through and then back to their seats. It makes it very difficult to receive in a reverent manner.

Please elaborate( again). Thanks.
As Joannm explains, an indult is permission to do something which would otherwise be forbidden, permission to deviate from the law. But it is not the case that kneeling for Communion would ordinarily be required and permission is needed to allow standing as an exception.

Eucharisticum Mysterium (1967) set out the ground rules as follows:
**34. The Way of Receiving Communion
**
a) In accordance with the custom of the Church, Communion may be received by the faithful either kneeling or standing. One or the other way is to be chosen, according to the decision of the episcopal conference, bearing in mind all the circumstances, above all the number of the faithful and the arrangement of the churches. The faithful should willingly adopt the method indicated by their pastors, so that Communion may truly be a sign of the brotherly union of all those who share in the same table of the Lord.
In accordance with this, then, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (my translation from the Latin; I’m referring to the controlling editio typica, not the American adaptations) states:
160. . . . The faithful communicate kneeling or standing, as the Conference of Bishops shall have determined. When, however, they communicate standing, it is urged that they make a due sign of reverence, to be established in the same norms, before receiving the Sacrament.
Thus, as you see, the Church has no “default” or “universal norm” for Communion posture. When the bishops’ conference of a nation decides that the norm within that country shall be standing, this does not require any indult, permission to do what would otherwise be illegal.

You know I have been wondering the same thing. We are going before and up to the God of all creation including ourselves that gives us life and wants to actually live within us and yet, there is so much differing on whether to kneel before Our God and Creator. I am speaking about those that can physically kneel. I just don’t get it.
