Vatican Cracks Down On Dress Code

Wait, Matt. Are you saying that there is no ‘absolute’ truth or belief? That any given Catholic’s knowledge of the faith is 'only’ their (that is, individual) ‘belief’, and that one person’s belief, whether it differs so materially from another’s that it is in fact an OPPOSITE belief, is 'just as good?"

That sounds a bit like indifferentism. . .that since nobody can really know ‘what is truth’, that what ‘works for you’ is as good as what ‘works for me’ even if they’re two completely opposite things. That doesn’t sound like Catholic teaching at all.
Nope that’s not what I’m saying at all. I believe there is a truth. And there are many beliefs seeking it. And I’m glad to see you agree no one can really know. 👍 Peace on your journey to the truth, Tantum.

Can we also get a restriction on cheap perfume?
👍 How about any perfume or cologne. Some of that stuff when too much is put on can gag me! But I’ve never walked out of Mass over it or been unable to focus on Whom I’m there for. Nor approached the priest to institute a ban. I don’t particularly care for the smell of incense. Lets ban it too. 🤷

Actually, I don’t agree with that, Matt (and I think you knew that).

Yes, we can really know. Blessed are those who do not see and yet believe.

Oh, I’m not in the wrong ‘faith group’ Matt (though since I think the Catholic faith is the whole truth

**Wherever **did you get the idea that I wanted to be told what to eat, how to dress etc.? I’m as much an individual as any other person, Matt.
Your “I think” precisely is my point Tantum.

Here. “doesn’t mean that we can’t trust them to make judgments about how we need to live (and eat, sing, dress, etc.)”

You might lose some of your individuality, Tantum, if your priest tells you not to eat grilled tilapia on a Friday of Lent and you would rather have it grilled than fried. But you nevertheless obey him and not eat grilled fish. But you’re free to eat all the fried tilapia you would like if that’s what you think it takes to be obedient to Christ. God bless you Tantum and peace.

I’m unclear if Rich even reasonably thinks such a dress code of dresses and suits only is ever going to be instituted in his Little Rock, Arkansas diocese let alone in every diocese worldwide.
No, I don’t. This diocese is pretty laid-back, and I don’t know of any parishes that have rules about dress during Mass (at least in Little Rock itself). I doubt that any do.

Your individuality doesn’t matter as much as you think it does, though.

Actually, I don’t agree with that, Matt (and I think you knew that).

Yes, we can really know. Blessed are those who do not see and yet believe.
Again Tantum, thanks for making my argument for me.

But if your priest decrees you can only eat fried foods but if you’re arteries were ever clogging, think about believing you must obey him on such a silly rule. As always, God’s blessings to you, Tantum. And peace always to you.

I think that is ridiculous for them to being trying to force people to dress a certain way IN PUBLIC.

Now I DO approve of their dress code when being inside the House of the Lord, because you should dress modestly in church, however it’s a public square and infringes on people’s rights.

These are people who are outside in the hot Rome sun, this isn’t northern Canada in January. If a guy wants to wear some cargo shorts or if a girl wants to roll her sleeves or wear a MODEST tank top, then leave them alone.

NOW if you have girls and women wearing shorts up to their butts and tiny tank tops; that’s OF COURSE not proper attire for church but you still can’t tell them to change when they are OUT IN PUBLIC.

Oh and please no one give the argument, “Well what if they went around naked” because we all know that is not what I am advocating and if someone’s walking around naked they should get arrested.

It’s not a public square in our American sense of the word. St. Peter’s Square is the territory of the sovereign Vatican City-State. I doubt you are a citizen of the Vatican, and I doubt the Vatican recognizes the right to dress immodestly on its sovereign soil (or stone, or concrete, as the case may be).

I believe and think not only Catholics but even some non-Catholics in cargos and tank tops might vacation in Italy on a hot summer day and stop by the square. Might not actually even want to enter into the basillica. I recall attending a public place here in the states in shorts and some dude was streaking in his birthday suit. He was arrested.

There are lots of near by vendors that sell shawls and “paper” type disposable pants.
There is lots of moneychanging going on? Not in the temple I presume but outside in public?

I know that (supposedly) we live at a time when normal average daily temperatures might average a degree higher than previous times (although ‘great’ variations in temperature and climate have always occurred). . .but I find it hard to believe that only 100 years ago both men and women in Rome (and in the U.S.) wore quite a bit ‘more’ clothing (and covered a greater area of ‘skin’) than we do today, and somehow these people not only functioned ‘outside’ but flourished. Were they that much ‘stronger’ than we are?

Do some people think that having a very small proportion (on average) more clothing coverage in Church is some kind of mortal sin against the god of choice?

Personally, I have found (and I live in VA where right now the heat index outside is 109 degrees) that I will feel cooler going outside wearing a short elbow-length sleeve mock turtle tee and a long peasant tiered skirt–with half slip–than I would going out in a halter and shorts. Plus, I run far less risk of skin cancer. When I get on the bus, I’m covered enough that I don’t shiver from the AC, and when I get out, I don’t break into such a sweat going from AC to ‘broil’. My skin is covered and it’s actually cooler.

I see quite a few Muslim women in town. . .wearing long skirts or pants, long sleeve top AND the hijab (veil) . … and they seem cooler and more comfortable than the women standing next to them wearing jogging shorts and cami tops!

Now, I’m not advocating hijabs and burkas as mandatory, by any means. But I do think that a lot of people think that ‘heat’ equals ‘take off as much clothing as possible to be comfortable’ --and that is not necessarily the case. . .not even in humid hot weather.

Sure, but only in the areas in which he is competent to demonstrate his authority.
Did anyone every question whether Peter was competent? This man was placed as the shepard of God’s Church, he is competent when it comes to EVERYTHING.

you highlighted in red my words, “that’s my belief” so i assume you are referring to my belief as my problem. It is sad when people do not recognize their own beliefs as just that. Faith and belief. Even those who believe in following all “the rules and traditions that have been laid down” must have faith in the those rules and traditions as having been correctly laid down and faith in the ecclesial body’s interpretation of itself which is doing the laying. So what many of even the most devout faithful catholics on caf do not seem to grasp is their faith is simply that too their belief. God bless you on your walk of faith and peace.
relativism!!!

I really think you need to sit down and read the Catechsim. You don’t seem to have an understanding of what Catholicism is.

I too am glad to hear this. I think what bothers me the most in my parish, is the altar boys and girls wearing flip flops with their robes. It makes me crazy.

Everything related to faith and morals, yes. But, certainly, you can’t attribute his denying Christ to competence. To his credit, though, he did not say much outside the realm of faith and morals so we can’t get a whole picture of his competence outside that area.

relativism!!!
Not at all. We all believe what we do because we choose to believe it to be The Good for us. Catholics do that, the Orthodox do, and even Buddhists believe what they do on the basis of perceptions of what The Good is.
