Vatican defends decision on Caritas official [CNAU]

The Vatican has defended its decision against supporting another term for Caritas secretary general Dr Lesley-Anne Knight, saying it is seeking a “new profile” for the international aid agency, reports the Catholic News Agency.

In an interview with the National Catholic Reporter published on March 2, Knight suggested that the Holy See was out of touch with Caritas and blasted its plan to modify practices in place in favor of a greater emphasis on evangelisation.

Is it just possible that Knight might be slightly out of touch with the Vatican’s goals? Or that Caritas’ focus has shifted, over the past 130 years, away from its origianal intent? From their own webiste, it would appear that they have become little more than another social justice obsessed organization, to the detriment of the Gospel. Now, social justice (just what is the definition, anyway?) is certinly to be sought after, but I believe that the Church intends more to focus on the Gospel in conjunction with the seeking of social justice. Saving lives is paramount, but what ultimate good is done for those to whom we do not preach the good news?
