I the British press about the same thing as the press in general (in the same way yellow journalism and journalism mean the same thing)?

The British tabloid press does anything to get a juicy story. And often makes up lies and ‘scandals’ to fire people up.
People who actually want news here read what’s known as the ‘quality press’ or ‘broadsheets’ namely the Telegraph, Guardian, Independent, FT, the Times.

By the way guys, the ‘red top’ title is an indication of the type of press it is: trash.
There are also 2 low quality newspapers that don’t have this ‘red top’ the Daily Express and the Daily Mail. All sensationalist, but the Express and the Mail are the reactionary voice of the silent majority in the British middle classes.

I blame the press, British or not, for fanning the flames. I, also, blame pols and others who do the same.

What is it about CAF that brings on all this manufacturing of ‘enemies’ and trying to ensure that, if they’re not enemies at the outset, they’ll end up being so - or appear to be so?

I do not think we need to manufacture them. There are plenty currently existing.

To argue that Angela Merkel, leader of the CDU (with its millions of - conservative - Catholic voters) and Chancellor of Germany, is some kind of enemy of the Catholic Church is . . . . well . . . sorry to use a technical term here but . . . it’s . . . . well ‘bonkers’.

She does not have to be a sworn enemy to act badly in this case.

She hasn’t announced a new Kulturkampf against the Church, she hasn’t denounced the Church, she asked the Pope for clarification. For this there is no question of a demand that she ‘goes to Canossa’ (to borrow from a famous event involving a German ruler) ‘in body or in spirit’ (to borrow from a very famous German Chancellor talking about that event).

Good message board fun, I’m sure, but, basically, ‘bonkers’.

When we lived in America, the one thing I did was to keep my mouth shut about American politics (bit like I do on CAF - apart from joking about the language) despite having been something of an activist - a young Thatcherite when in the UK (I’ve mellowed a lot ).

I came to the conclusion that it was ‘different planets’ in terms of discourse.
