“…where the country’s interior minister, citing terrorism fears, is pushing to ban such initiatives.”
👍

I guess I will have to be thankful that the Vatican and the current and last Pope have a tolerant opinion of islam.

I pray that moderate muslims will allow the expansion of Catholicism in islamic nations.

Does one have to erase all history from their brain to be “tolerant”?

Do you disagree that these imams have been responsible for misleading muslims like that.

There are fundamentalists in any religion who would trick people into furthering their own agenda.
Christian charity aside, it is worthwhile to know the nature of Islam. It would be a mistake to compare Christian fundamentalism to its Islam counterpart. Christians are never called to bring the Gospels through act of fighting, humiliation and subjugation to the people. The Quran is another matter though. The fact is if the Quran and its prophet, Mohammad, are to be followed closely, the so-called fundamentalist imams today may be right.

This may be the reason why ordinary Muslims would not come out to condemn Ben Laden, in fact many would do just the opposite.

Muslims have what they called Jihad - a struggle which involved more than 90% physical - that’s war. Only small portion of it is internal and spiritual.

In a nutshell, the unbelievers or the infidels are to be fought and subdued until they believe in Allah. It can be frigthening to hear all this but this is all in their Quran, Hadith and exemplified by Mohammad. There are some threads here that deals with Islamic issues that discuss them more in details.

So Catholics of such opinions need to say it though I will not.

Our leaders in the Curia and our Popes are wrong or mistaken.

well they are tolerant- that’s all a Catholic needs to know.
Catholics are the most inquiring and intellectual of all forms of christianity.
I doubt erasing history is part of being either.

Indeed they are- but they are also called to acknowledge authority unlike protestants.

What authority am I ignoring?

If it means one must put on blinders to obvious facts, I am not sure what you are asking?

You said its been what? 40 years or so that Islam has been hijacked?

I am not sure about your math sir/madame. I gave you examples that reach way way back in time, and many a martyr to boot.😦

The Vatican is also a state. In inter-faiths and inter-nations dealings, she I believe, has to conduct herself in the basic principle accordingly, with bigger picture to consider. That can never be easy and there’s problem that need to be solved according to priority. There are teething problems that are difficult to resolve, the China relation is one of them, and the Vatican is working on all that while at the same not to compromise its own stance and belief.

I think the church hireachy knows what they are doing and have inside knowledge perhaps more than us about other religions.

Giving personal opinion as a Catholic is not disabodience to the Magestrium, if that’s any consolation.

If i saw a passer on the street who needs a lift at night, do i take him in my car in the name of charity or maybe he is a serial killer so i must beware? one can be charitable but vigilent and sober, as Jesus says.

"If we tell our people they have no right to offend, we have to tell the others they have no right to destroy us, " said Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican’s Secretary of State. “We must always stress our demand for reciprocity in political contacts with authorities in Islamic countries and, even more, in cultural contacts,” added Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, its foreign minister.

On a side note, can anyone tell me where the Vatican says Islam is a religion of peace? because as far as i know, the current pope, when asked if Islam is a religion of peace, replied : “I would not like to use big words to apply generic labels,” he replied. “It certainly contains elements that can favor peace, it also has other elements: We must always seek the best elements.”

Hi

So, he did not confirm your stance in clear words. So you have to add words to what he did not say.

Do you think his words are so valuable for Muslims. I don’t think so, though I respect him as a religious leader of the Catholics.

Thanks

No, of course not. Muslims could care-less if a non-Muslim stands up and protects the Muslim from abuse - they never reciprocrate the appreciation. On the other hand, if our Popes had not made the effort to educate Catholics on Islam’s good sides, just imagine what could happen. Two big entities…no need to paint a scenario.

Hi

Well I do respect him and that is according to the teachings of Muhammad.

Thanks

I really don’t think these historical religious bashings are all that relevant. For all those who say Catholicism never was spread by the sword, I might recommend a look to Catholicism as propagated in Latin America. Now, it was a political reign’s interest to do this and it was for the glory of Spain with Christianity coming along as a fellow traveler. I can’t help but suspect that the advance of Islam was the same. That is, the advance of the Moghuls was about the glory of the Moghuls and Islam was simply a fellow traveler.

I will say, that Jews lived better under the Moors than they did under the Christians. It’s why they were ethnically cleansed after the reconquest of Europe. Because the Christian rulers did not trust them. Of course, the rulers could have simply provided them the equivalent rights they had received under the Moors, but I guess it was easier to simply drive them out.

The one thing I agree with Marx about is that most of the clashes of history have been about class interests and power, not about other facing interests. For instance, the Protestant Reformation may have had theological underpinnings, but it was also a revolt of the German burghers against the aristocracy. The western Catholic Church got caught in the crosshairs because it had sided with the aristocracy and acted as a gatekeeper with the divine rights of monarchs. So I would imagine Islam’s spread had some class issues as well.

It remains a fact that the muslim population in europe is growing rapidly… Do muslims, because they follow a different faith, not deserve a place to worship?

I think Christ’s model for us, is to love our “enemies” (though I would hardly call the muslim PEOPLE my enemies… the system of belief as opposed to Christ, yes, but not the people.) I think by demonstrating charity in this instance, it is showing that we are not an oppressive people, but that we have charity towards others. Even someone who does not worship Christ, may still be Christ in our lives.

I like to think of mother theresa, and how she saw the face of Jesus in every person she encountered:)
Many mosques are funded with money from entities whose main purpose is to preach to moderate muslim youth jihad against the West. That’s just a plain fact.
