He not the first person in history to ever forgive a would be assassin so its not that big a deal. But the damage to the church left in his wake will be his legacy for generations. Just thank him every time you see an altar girl or hear a catholic pedophile joke.
We have no altar girls nor heard any jokes about Catholic pedophiles here. That is something that I have only seen happen in your society, and that makes it a problem of your society, not the Catholic Church.
If you think he was a great pope because he forgave an assassin despite the terrible condition of the church, an apostasy not seen since the Arian heresy, then there’s no convincing you. You have your eyes wide shut.
An apostasy not seen since the Arian heresy, you say? I shall hold you to that. 🙂

As the above post mentions, the conclusion that the Church is in apostosy reveals a very western bias and totally ignores most facts. I think those who over blow the problems and use the rhetoric of crisis and apostasy are the ones who shut their eyes to data.

I would far rather live with my eyes wide shut than to place my faith in the hands of an armchair ameteur theologian.

Methinks, however, my eyes are not wide shut - or shut by any other description. It is not for no reason that the crop of newer priests are known as JP2 priests. And that speaks volumes to those who will hear.

To those who hear only the sound of their own voice and that of their fellow travelers, such cannot be heard.

Your so lucky about ppl not making pedophile jokes around where you are!
When I tell people I’m Catholic they occasionally joke about that, my family who are Protestant are actually the worst offenders. It hurts my feelings cause they just don’t know that they are making fun of the true Church.

I want to live where you are!! Lol 🙂

Shouldn’t Vatican II be Used as a Bridge, Not as a Wedge?

How is it that Council partisans occupying the Church’s highest offices are constantly observed bullying, and trying to coerce, force, or intimidate into submission . . .

To restore unity in the Church, shouldn’t Vatican II partisans currently occupying the Church’s highest offices . . .
[yawn] Who is bullying, coercing and intimidating whom? By all means, people are free to follow their own will unto Judgment Day, but are not free to come here denegrating the Church to others.

Of course I can’t really tell what’s being referred to, but “subsists in” sure is a hot button in contradistinction to “is”…and I bet that’s at least one point of contention…
I believe Lumen Gentium had pointed out that the mystical Body of Christ is entirely Catholic, but contains members who are not even Catholic, that the Universal Church, while visibly represented on Earth by the Catholic Church, is actually bigger than that.

Such is the prerogative of God. The country club member may think it’s an exclusive club if others don’t do what he does, but he is not the Owner, and the real feast is yet to occur.

Maybe I am wrong but the Society of Saint Pius X strikes me as very prideful. To me, that is the reason why they have not yet reconciled with the Church as a whole. They are too prideful to admit that maybe, just maybe, they might be wrong on some things.
I’ve seen that in all their clergy whom I’ve met. Stiff-necked, we-are-always-right-the-Vatican-is-wrong mentality that wants the Vatican to change. They don’t have to. A bit of humility would go a long way in helping them reconcile with the True Church. 😦

While I am sure that some of the SSPX clergy and laity won’t settle for anything less than a complete repudiation of Vatican II - essentially “re-booting” the Church from a “system restore point” of 1962 - I’m sure that Bishop Fellay, and most of the top-level SSPX leadership (besides, maybe, Bp. Williamson) know that isn’t a realistic possibility. Yet, they are still talking with the Vatican, which is an encouraging sign.

What I would guess the SSPX is going for is a way they can shove Vatican II under the rug, out of sight and out of mind, either through a declaration that it isn’t binding as a matter of dogma, or a very, very narrow reading of the V-II documents such that they can be interpreted as changing very little, if anything at all.

No intent to derail thread. Just wanted to mention that my oldest daughter graduated from the University of Alabama in 2010. Roll Tide! Wonderful school in a nice town.

I just ordered “Vatican II: The Battle for Meaning” by Massimo Faggioli. He holds a PhD from the University of Turin and is an Assistant Professor of Theology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul (Minnesota). Might prove to be resourceful on this topic.

I am half way through the book. I think you will enjoy it!

It would actually have to be a bit earlier than that …
If we question the actual act of “rebooting” to a previous point to cut out a Church council, we will find that there is no point one can go back to as this would be something that has never happened in the Catholic Church, thus would be the opposite of traditional and an extreme innovation. Ironic, isn’t it.

See post below. I accidentally quoted myself. Horrible source, if I say so myself.

Excellent! I will look forward to receiving my copy. If I like it well enough, I may look at Massimo Faggioli’s most recent book “True Reform: Liturgy and Ecclesiology in Sacrosanctum Concilium”. Already have it on my Wish List for future reference.

Maybe someone here can help me with something. The Second Vatican Council was “pastoral” and not dogmatic. There were old dogmas mentioned, but no new dogmas and the SSPX does not deny any dogmas of the Church. So, of what dogmatic content is the Archbishop refering?
As stated by the Cardinal
An Ecumenical Council, according to the Catholic faith, is always the supreme teaching authority of the Church
Since was Vatican II, the documents from the council ARE the church’s teaching.

The point is that the SSPX does not deny a single dogma. So, what exactly is the problem?

They reject the Pope and his authority.
If they rejected the Pope, why would they be going through talks with him? Huh. Strange.

Too much focus on how “evil” the SSPX is and not enough cleaning up in the rest of the Church.
