Doing one’s penitential practice in secret is a good way to spare oneself these discussions about other people’s opinions of one’s penances. Perhaps that’s even one reason why the Lord recommended it.

I question whether this fake meat is any healthier though. It’s still highly processed food. It may be okay for Lent, but I don’t want to eat it.

According to an FAQ I read from the Bishops of England and Wales, Friday penance is also a type of collective witness to the Catholic faith.

So if you’re a meat eater and you’re out with friends and you choose a veggie burger they may well ask why - giving you the opportunity to give witness through your actions. I would think that then fits within the “spirit” of the rules maybe?

The veggie burgers are here in Canada and you’ll pay $2.00 more for them than BEEF. Like get out.

So for me to eat a veggie burger on Friday would certainly be a penance.

It’s not healthy, it’s full of sodium. (And I have read that the soy they use is genetically modified.) It is smothered in fresh vegetables which might be somewhat healthy if not for the fact that mayonnaise is glopped on it.

You can also get some nice unhealthy-but-meatless French fries to go with it and perhaps some equally unhealthy meatless soft drink 🙂

That’s the main reason I do it. It’s not really for a penitential practice.
Last time I was out with people on Friday and ordered meatless nachos, and stressed “Meatless” like three times to the distracted waiter, I got a bunch of, “Oh, are you vegetarian?” I said, “No, I’m observant”.
Then the darn things came with meat on them anyway and I had to send them back to the kitchen.

Yes. I would further add, what’s the point. If I was vegan or vegetarian, why would I want something that simulated meat? It would be much more healthier to just make a “burger” with some combination of vegetables that appeals to my taste. And it wouldn’t contribute to any lingering temptation of meat.

I think it’s just about marketing. It’s not really about the “burger”. Burger King feels like it needs to throw the woke crowd a bone, or make a hedge against the woke crowd, one or the other.

It’s probably less about the meat; just as with the instance where P&G felt that it should market sanitary napkins to men. ?? It’s just about marketing.

Doesn’t the burger have a bunch of estrogen in it? I rather eat a meat burger imho because its real.

That’s what one of the articles above claims. That it has so much estrogen that if a man ate 4 of the burgers per day he would develop breasts. I have my doubts about that part of the claim, but in general I am reticent to embrace something that attempts to pass itself off as just like the real thing, only artificially crafted.
I think it’s just about marketing.
That’s really it in a nutshell. Lots of people will try it either out of curiosity or because they think it must be healthier because it’s plant-based.

Just look at this thread. Here we are at CAF talking about Burger King and drumming up free publicity for them. 😜

Many people are vegetarian for ethical reasons, even though they still enjoy the taste of meat. The simulated meat burgers let’s that have the taste without what they see as ethical concerns of eating or raising animals.

I’ve seen people eat more than that at za za bazaar. Some people really want their money’s worth.

Now, the real question that is on everybody’s mind is if you created a genetically modified cold-blooded sea cow, if could you eat the cow.
Well, that is far from being on my mind. ☺️

I’ve done a liquid fast before, you realise at the end of the day how many times you went to the toilet because you drink more, it must flush out your system.

I can see myself as a vegetarian.

I don’t think I can be a vegan.

If you have both the health and the desire, why not? It seems to me that, hard as it is, one would experience the hunger of Christ to a certain extent.
