Hmmm… a hat! I rather like the idea! Now, where can I find a good hat? What would be a good style in winter?

Something in plain black felt, I think.

I think the wee doillies are ugly. The mantilla style look nicer, but I think there’s something weird about specifically buying an item that is clearly made for wearing to Mass. I’ll admit it: when I see one, I see a little cartoon balloon over her head that says “We’re into TLM and Vatican II was a travesty and I’m ANGRY!!! Watch me kneel to recieve on the tongue!!!”

Of course, that’s all in my head.

Why not wear any old scarf over your head? Why does it have to black or white lace? Hmmm… I’m gonna see if I can’t find a plain black felt hat or a nice scarf to wear over my head. My church has a lot of “earth mother” types who wear long baggy skirts, handmade sweaters, and then colored tights with birkenstocks. I’ll bet the colorful scarf thing would really appeal to them.

That’s exactly the point I was making in post #74. It doesn’t have to be a lace mantilla. The point of the devotion is to cover one’s head.

I just need to reiterate: that’s all IN MY HEAD.

I know plenty of really nice women who wear mantillas. But, there are some angry fringy types at my parish, too.

I understood that! I just thought it was funny how you put it. I wear a lace mantilla myself at TLM I attend! 😉

Hello,

I wanted to say thank you for posting the old thread, I did learn a few interesting things on the subject.

I have a question in relation to this topic. I am wondering if it would be appropriate to wear a veil to a non-Latin Mass?

And pearls go nicely with the hat and gloves, unless your head is too big and your hands are too big.

My wife and daughters do.

I would love to see them come back. 👍

A few women wear them at my church but like one other poster mentioned I would as if I was tring to draw attention to myself (or making myself look especially holy) since the majority do not wear one.

May I offer an observation?

I’ve noted that many women who have posted in this thread say that they would like to see the veil come back, but since “no one” wears them, they are afraid to do so. I’m paraphrasing.

Anyway, this is how fashion begins…those who see an item, like it, and choose to wear it, regardless of what “others” will think.

I started wearing a veil because someone I knew did so. Sure, it helps that she is a sincere and devout person. I wish I could live as holy a life as she does.

If you feel inclined, wear one! Others will take courage from you and if enough of us go to Mass wearing the veil, then it WILL come back into fashion again.

I am afraid of what people think of me…that I’m “holier than thou” when I wear a veil to Mass. And since I attend Mass alone I know it does likely make me stand out somewhat. However, I feel called…and hope that maybe my wearing the veil will help another to do so…and so on and so on.

Bell bottoms and poodle skirts, not to mention parachute pants and zubaz started the same way.

Veils obviously have a different “target group” and a different motive, but the phenomenon can be the same.

Just something to consider.

Oh, and btw…I wear mantillas purchased for use at Mas…but I would not be adverse to a scarf or other type of covering should I find one that matches my clothing! The point IS to be covered…not WHAT is used.

God Bless, everyone!

Why is it that MEN are so fixated on this idea???
Perhaps in an attempt to avoid fixating on other things (thoughts) when they should be paying attention to Mass.

“Some people wear them at our Parish but years ago when Vatican II came in and everyone stopped wearing them I was in Catholic school and my mom made us wear them. The nuns would make fun of us and it taught me to stand up for what you believed in, but I really don’t see the necessity of these veils. God looks at the heart! Yes dress in your best but no I don’t think I would wear one again.”

Your mother did the right thing, as it was required by Canon Law explicitly.

The new Canon Law does not mention it, but that does not mean it is not necessary.

You don’t see the necessity of veils? Maybe you ought to read the arguments for them. They have been required since the SECOND POPE, Pope Linus. If that is not a Tradition, I don’t know what is.

CatholicCrusade…Your mother did the right thing, as it was required by Canon Law explicitly…

A law not abbrogated by a susequent remains in full effect.

Many Baptist churches still require a veil.
From a Baptist Site:
It is the sad truth, friends, and a chief reason is that so many preachers refuse to have anything at all to do with this matter (head covering), in spite of the fact that it is something which involves even angels. I hear someone protest, “It isn’t important, Brother Cloud.” I agree that it is not as important as many other things,** but if it is not important at all, why in the world is it in the Bible?**

There is no going back to the past.

It might be “a good idea” to return to veils, but it just won’t happen, at least by fiat.

Perhaps if people would voluntarily start wearing veils, in a generation or two, perhaps they’ll be a significant enough number doing so in enough places, it might be worthwhile to reinstate the practice legally.

Veils are a sign of respect for God which goes back to the old testament, and just like all things in the spirit of Vatican II , which has very little respect for God and is meant to entertain and make life easier for the laity, the veils were thrown away, sort of like burning the bra was a liberation symbol for the female. Soon you wont have any Traditions left in the church, and there are 4 signs of any religion , the Catholic religion, that must be kept in order for it to stay a religion, and one of them, continuity with the Past no longer exists with the Novus Ordo, to the point that the Mass itself was discarded, hence the term “Novus Ordo” or “New Order” and New Mass which is by all dogma, is invalid

God bless
