To start off, this is my first post, though I have read many posts on many subjects here in the past this my my first post.

With that said, let me lay some background… My Great Grandmother told my mother, and us when we were younger on many cases where she would dream of someone she hadn’t spoken with or seen in years, and the next day or two she would find out that they died. That’s the extent of what I know of her dreams.

My Mother, who was always a devout Catholic and still is, has told us many times on several occasions that dreams came true. One was of a cousin telling her to tell her mother not to cry for her that she was happy - and the cousin died 2 days later. The other major one that I know of saved our lives in the park from a car running us over (she dreamed about us dying in the park hit y a car the night before).

I have also had not only dreams that came true (no dreams in many years like that), but I’ve had thoughts in my head on waking, particularly a few years back before I met in person a new friend, that the person with change my life - and they did in fact - nearly destroying my life - which though ended up in my overnight (literally) reversion back to the faith after 25 years 2 years later - when I can only describe as a thought that I needed to follow Christ (so indeed they resulted nearly in destroying my life and actually bringing me back to God).

Since then, there have been a bunch of times while in prayer and contemplation that I have received thoughts that guided me to answers, or warned me of things that could harm me.

What really though is the problem for me is this: my oldest daughter has experienced the same dreams, like a warning of a certain man in a red shirt in a dream that actually wandered into the school the next day and peaked into the classroom (she was freaked out), and a bunch of other things she has dreamed that have come true. She once dreamed of a plane crash, and a date (she awoke repeating the date - she was only 7 or 8 at the time) - and to this day we will not fly on that date.

Now, my younger daughter (9 y) just last night after our prayers (which is why I am posting this) tells me that she doesn’t dream about normal stuff she dreams about things and they come true. I have never discussed this type of stuff with the little ones as not to confuse them. But she told me a few things she dreamed of that came true the next day, and she was afraid. I told her simply, God is speaking to you, don’t be afraid.

I am at a loss on this. Is this a gift of the holy spirit, is God speaking to us? We do not dwell on these things (or at least I don’t) nor do I try to discern the future etc - I just go with the flow. I pray the liturgy of the hours, the rosary a few times a day, I have started some Ignatian contemplation exercises, we never miss mass. Never ever do we nor have we ever messed with the occult or anything like that, in fact I think psychics are phony and Satanic sometimes.

What do I tell my kids? Do I just ignore it? Is it Satan? Is it God? I really don’t know what to do about this.

Any insight or advice would be appreciated!

I have not, mostly because my oldest hasn’t mentioned anything re: this in near 8-10 years, and my youngest daughter just told me she has had these dreams last night.

I should note too that when the dreams do occur they are specific - and nothing symbolic. Dejavu - except you remember you dreamt it. Also rarely are they useful if anytime at least in my personal experience.

I should speak to my pastor (I haven’t told anyone other than the kids, my mother, my wife) and maybe get some advice or direction, only reason I have not is because in my case I seem to get “commands” or “direction” (in fact this is what told me to return to the church - next day I did as told and haven’t looked back) and not premonitions or dreams anymore. Plus, I think he’d think me a lunatic probably lol.

Thanks

I have had a few prophetic dreams about big stuff in my life. By “a few” I would say less than 10, but they were very dramatic.

Having said that, most thoughts and dreams are just the brain sweeping itself out. If I took every dream as being a premonition, I would quickly find myself in a bad state of anxiety. (Like many people, I have had dreams about plane crashes, tornadoes, being physically attacked by crazed murderers and unable to call 911, my own impending death, etc.) I think such anxiety comes from the devil and it is likely some sort of attack on people who may be a little sensitive to begin with. I am pretty sure some of the saints experienced this sort of “anxiety attack” from the devil.

You need to tell the kids to trust in God and if they are disturbed by a particular dream, simply say the prayers to God and perhaps to St. Michael and then forget about it. Tell them that if a dream has something in it that they really need to know or remember, the Holy Spirit will find a way to inspire them/ let them know that, but that many times dreams are just the brain cleaning clutter and not every dream is God-inspired.

Read “The Psychology of Dreams” by Paul R Robbins or “Dreaming: A Very Short Introduction” by J Allen Hobson.

Dreams are simply your mind rummaging through some random memories and cobbling together bits and pieces. There is no meaning (sorry, Freud). You may see common threads simply because of your own memories–if you have been brought up on a farm, it’s likely you’re going to dream about a farm. If you grew up in a city, you’re more likely to dream about tall buildings, etc. There is no logic to them–in fact, the “logic” part of your brain is disabled during dreaming. That’s why you can fly, go from one place to another in an instant, etc. There’s no religious meaning. That’s just superstition.

As for “dreams coming true,” that’s nonsense. First of all, dreams are generally vague and very hard to remember (the memory section of your brain is also disabled during dreaming). Coincidences happen all the time. They are common. There’s nothing magical about them, they’re just a product of probability.

For example, I used to teach abroad. When I went on vacation in Europe, it became sort of a game to guess who we’d meet by chance, and where. Every single vacation in Europe we would meet, by pure chance, another teacher from the same school. But think about it: We all went to Europe at the same time. We all went to the same tourist sites. How could we NOT bump into each other?

A friend lived at a university in Saudi Arabia. Who was his neighbor? (By chance, of course) It was a guy who had gone to jr. h.s. with his wife and who had then moved away right after that. She hadn’t seem him since he was about 14. But now he was living next door in Saudi Arabia. What are the odds? Pretty good, actually.

Ever learn a new word and then be surprised because you hear it the next day? Well, you heard it before, too, but you never noticed. Now you notice.

Golf: a hole in one. What are the odds? Pretty good. How about making a basket from half court? All sorts of Youtube videos. How about the same player making essentially the same shot to win two consecutive basketball games? Unlikely right? And yet that’s what a Notre Dame player did on the woman’s basketball team. You can go on and on.

There’s a saying that goes something like this: If you take an event that is not IMPOSSIBLE, but is extremely unlikely, it is CERTAIN to happen given enough time.

Most vision and dreams are dramatic to our perception about life. I was always informed by visions ahead of time my close relatives passed away, but they no longer had suffering. Most vision and dreams are about punishments to teach us to fear God to enhance the faith and trust in God or do good works or vice versa.

Vision and dream is the prophecy or wisdom gift of the Holy Spirit. The message or teaching from God. Eventually it can become the prophecy revelation I think if you are chosen by the Holy God. God always give a sign for us to understand or a confirmation sign or event/s before the full message is fulfilled.

Another gift is pre-recognition vision which Holy Ghost shows the event ahead of time to prepare and deal with that or the intention of people you confront. The dream or vision is briefly enough for you remember details. This is a blessing of secret power from Holy Ghost to protect you. Exactly in the dreams, in the right side of the body of Christ, you described above but mostly they are in visions and belong the left side.

The Beatific vision or dream by Catholic theology and by saint Augustine can only happen in heaven. The most highest ones we can have are the divinization visions and dreams like Eastern Christian tradition described and they are in God’s presence with perfect happiness, Holy sweet smelling; etc.

Generally the accurate vision in dream or day time often appear as a flash, brief in a second or less, only the blessed receiver can see, direct meaning, perfect image, and bright. The prophecy dream can last longer when it is accompanied with the sign of God or Heaven. The sign of God is a warning to evil spirits and they afraid of that and flee.

Another kind of dream which the dreamer is a part of the dream lively.
The dreamer is likely travel in time backward or forward with physical evidence when waking up in order to witness something the Holy God like you know.

One of highest visions is probably the 7-D one, supernatural power. It is the real appearance in small scale 7D. The future event always happen at certain time cycle. It has direct meaning but also contain the keys for interpretation.

Disregard all other dream or vision from lowly spirits especially the darken ones. It is the want or threat from the dark side. Since the dark side wants to make replica celestial dreams and vision to mislead us, they monitor the dreamers and seers closely to collect information to provide false info. These dreams have no quality images or a bunch of images of real Satan and demons.

The dream of indirect meaning lasts longer or very long and very difficult to understand, but valid if you can interpret the meanings.

Should protect the identity of the dreamer or seer as caution to avoid the unwanted annoyance of low level spirits’ interceptions in the spiritual world. Devils’ tactics are remove faith from us, secondly scare us if cant then mislead us with dreams and visions to false revelation.

Blessing,

In conclusion, dream and vision are Holy God’s gift and great benefits, but Satan can emerge and mislead us. Should consider only high quality vision/dream or with God’s sign and with confirmation sign or event. Pray and thanks Holy Spirit, Holy Trinity, Holy Mother Mary often and trust in Jesus name.

I almost never get “real” dreams, but I do know of people who do, or who go through similar experiences while awake. For example, I had a great-grandma who would go to a funeral— but the person she would see in the coffin would be the next person she knew who was going to die. (She hated it so much, eventually, she stopped going to funerals.) Or I had a sibling who had a dream that someone was going to die-- and the next morning or whatever, we got a phone call saying that so-and-so had passed. That sort of thing. There’s also random dreams that are true dreams, but they have nothing to do with spirituality or religion— like the time I dreamed about sitting in a strange yellow classroom full of students I didn’t know-- and fast-forward six months and a thousand-mile move across the country, and I find myself sitting in a classroom and the scene just clicks into place. Deja vu!

I’d say treat the dreams with respect, but without superstition, if that makes sense? Take the information with a grain of salt, but don’t let them paralyze you from living a normal life. Sometimes God gives us a heads-up. Usually when I get a heads-up, I don’t realize it’s a heads-up until after I’ve ignored it! 😛 But once in a while, it’s persistent enough that I do respond correctly— and I get to see the big picture of what was going on, and I’m like, “Ohhhh… that’s what it was.” Because usually, it’s not about whatever “thing” the thing seems to be about— but it’s about something bigger than the “thing”, and the thing just is the catalyst, if that makes sense?

How wrong you are! Obviously you’re not looking at this from a religious perspective. God has revealed many things through dreams!
Did you actually read the article you linked to? I didn’t think so. Let me quote it for you: “As a matter of fact dreams are now—we speak of civilized peoples—seldom heeded; only very ignorant and superstitious persons ponder over the “dictionaries of dreams” and the “keys to the interpretation of dreams” once so much in favor.”

Exactly. Superstition.

I do think some people have some level of prescience, though I don’t know that it’s in dreams, particularly
One of my late grandfathers frequently seemed to foresee things. Now, a person can say that was only his subconscious logic working things out as “probabilities” for the future. But some of them were well beyond that.

I remember one in particular. He lived in one town and had a farm at some distance from it. My parents lived in the country, but not near his farm. His custom was to take a lunch with him to his farm, work, then eat the lunch, work some more, then go home.

One day, he had some things to do at home. When he finished, it just struck him it would be a good idea to put his garden hose into his pickup. He had no reason to do it at all. It just seemed the thing to do. For the first time ever, he decided to go out of his way and eat his lunch at my parents’ front gate instead of just eating it at home or on his own farm.

While he was eating his lunch, he saw smoke coming up from near my parents’ house. So he went up there and saw that a fire had escaped from an incinerator and was burning under their propane tank. He looked for a way to put out the fire before the tank blew, but saw none. Then he remembered the hose in his pickup, hooked it up to their outside faucet, and put out the fire. It was just long enough.

Thing like that happened with him all the time.

“Modern theologians, whilst profiting by the progress of psychological research, continue to admit the possibility of dreams supernatural in their origin, and consequently the possibility of dream-interpretation depending on supernatural communications.”

Same article…

It’s different for different people. I’ve had the dream that foretold a significant death (3 days before the person out of the blue died). Other people may have the charism to foresee these things in some manner when they are awake.

In my experience, it’s pointless to try to argue with someone who dismisses all dreams and many other things as psychology and superstition. That person’s mind is simply not open to the possibility of some people having a charism from God to occasionally receive an important message via their dreams. The Church does not require one to believe in that possibility, so it is up to the individual’s preference.

I’m rather a fan of the Sleeping St. Joseph statue myself. St. Joseph is the classic example of the man who God spoke to in dreams, at least twice. I am sure he also had many other humdrum non-inspired dreams about getting stuff done at the carpentry shop or whatever.

When I say dreams, you must understand these stand out - they are not like normal dreams - in fact when you have such a dream (I don’t have dreams anymore like this - I have thoughts or like a picture - like a voice of no sound), you know it - it seems real - and then it happens. And not vague or obscure things. These are not dreams of disasters etc. These are not random changes or coincidences. These are dreams of people, or events that will happen, specifically. Detailed.

Perhaps you have a dream that a man, in a red jacket will try and harm you - and the very next day, a man in a red jacket walks into your school (unauthorized) and peeks into the classroom, you see him because you happen to look at the window on the door, tell your teacher, and she heads to the front desk and they call the cops (he was a drug addict looking to steal).

Or in my mothers case, a dream me and my brother would be hit and killed in the park by a car - and she wakes crying (as i said they feel real), then, the next day, as we are rolling around in the grass on our “big wheels”, a teenager in a car likely drunk, drives onto the baseball field where we are, and is flying, doing donuts, my mother is nearly 150 ft away at the water fountain, she looks up, screams, and a guy with his kid runs in front of the car because the driver did not see us.

Far from nonsense.

continue to admit the possibility of dreams supernatural in their origin
Sure. And it’s possible the Beatles were sending a coded message to Charles Manson in Helter Skelter. And it’s possible that the finch outside my window was sent by my dead grandmother to cheer me up. And it’s possible that finding a penny on the sidewalk is a sign that God has chosen me to be an instrument of his will. And if you want to believe that, feel free. Me? Nope. Superstition.

What they are referring to are actual dreams - like nonsensical random gibberish that everyone has. What I am discussing are not dreams one needs to interpret, nor are they general, they are like a 30 second clip - real and vivid, and detailed. They are always related to persons and and interactions with other people, and when they happen you know them right away, no need to think if it was a normal dream - and they come true - in exact detail, though as stated, sometimes the outcome is different.

If one has such a dream that something will happen, mark my words it will happen or happen with an altered outcome in the next day or so.

Again you are talking about superstition - I am talking about 30 second (no timer just a guess) glimpses into interactions or something that will occur in the next few days, usually the next day. Not finches or dreams of Grandma in heaven.
