Virgin Mary Defiled On “south Park”

We should all take heart. The fact that the “world” still hates the Catholic faith simply tells us the faith is still very, very relevant. It drives them nuts that people follow the Roman Catholic faith. While the show is sick, and the makers of the show need much prayer, it is affirmation of the power of the faith.

I disagree. I don’t recall hearing of an episode where they made fun of Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X. Are these men more sacred that the Blessed Mother? How about a “Hanky the Kwanza poo”? Oh hold it! It would be a hate-crime to defile any African American leader or tradition. Not that I wouldn’t be offended if they did.

I never watch the show, but here are some groups I don’t recall being defiled:

Atheists
Satanists
ACLU
Communists
Pornographers
Abortionists

I’m pretty sure these groups are “South Park Safe”!

I agree. It is only because the Catholic Church is Christ’s Church that these attacks come. Hey - if not for the Catholic Church, contraception would not be in the news much at all because it wouldn’t be controversial. The only reason these things are controversial is because their is a Church that stands for the bedrock of truth and deep down most know this to be true and take comfort that She is there.

The travesty is not so much offense to us believers - it is much more so that so many watch the junk on TV because they haven’t found what they need to fill their heart.

Please don’t encourage boycotts of South Park. While I do enjoy the show, it’s hurtfull when they attack the Church. But, they attack everything equally, and there has been an occasion or two where the Church is portrayed in a positive way.

Anyhow, boycotts and “moral outrage” would probably just encourage the writers to disrepect the Church and not accomplish anything. South Park has its audience; that audience knows the show and nothing they see on it leaves an impression.

I’m a lot more concerned with the path of anti-Catholicism that Law & Order (all three series) is going down right now.

South Park makes fun of EVERYTHING. Law and Order and the spin-offs now regular portray the Church as a place of molestors, bigots, murderers, etc. We as Catholics, should be able to put up with a few jokes from South Park. There’s bigger fish in the sea (should I say NBC) when it comes to anti-Catholic material.

They have made fun of blacks many times. They even have a regular character who is black and his name is “token”. They probably have gone after everyone on your list at some time and if not they will get around to it. Some of their biggest targets, the ones they attack most often, are liberals: Streisand, Alec Baldwin, etc. They have even portrayed Satan having a gay relationship with Saddam. They attack everyone and everything. Do not watch it, do not take it personally, and move on with life.

I see, but have they ever targeted a specific highly respected African-American leader?? Especially in such a hate filled way.

This goes way beyond old fashioned ha-ha stereotyping. This is an attack filled with hate on the one Lady we venerate above all others. There is no way you can convince me that this is just some kind of general light razing.

Making fun of everything is not Christian. You can have humour without mocking. I agree that Catholics have bigger fish to fry - so why watch the show?

Probably not Actually I liked Boston Legal and stopped watching it due to it’s agenda. I love Law & Order, but I’m probablly going to have to stop watching that and start writing letters to NBC.

Now - to be fair, I haven’t watched this South Park yet. My opinion could change. I’ll watch it an post follow up.

Teenage and college aged males would be most likely to laugh at this. I think that is the main audience for South Park.

I haven’t seen the episode, but from the description it may not require a deep knowledge of miracles but simply an awareness of news reports.

But to reach persons, to actually correct them, requires a teachable moment. Simply sending in protest mail will only encourage them - they want to shock and offend the pious. I think this is an example of where it is better to not react.

I disagree. So protesting is not teaching and reaching out? Evidently you and I have a different idea of Gospel. To say we shouldn’t protest is like saying we shouldn’t correct people for their immoral behavior. That’s literally what you said. Better not to react, and keep our emotions bottled up right? I’ll say protesting has its place, but when it comes to this show, and their target audience, I doubt it’ll do any good. Maybe the Law and Order & Boston Leagal crowd, it might work, but not this audience. This audience is looking to offend, and if they get a protest it’ll only make it funnier.

They are not trying to tear down to build up something else, they are tearing down just to tear stuff down. What to do is just to pray instead. One day people in this audience my need to look for a hand to lift them up, pray that you can be that hand to help lift them up to the Lord.

Well I think the analogy to see it, is to see South park as a punk kid and Viacom the parent. Go after the parent. If you start picking a fight with the kid, it’ll be like back in the school yard. The one who got made fun of and gave the biggest reaction, was the one who was cornered and made fun most.

Ok, I just watched it. That’s a difficult one to defend. What’s frustrating is that all they needed to do was make the blood on the statue come in the form of tears (you know from the eyes) and there wouldn’t be a problem at all. It’s like they added disgusting stuff and Pope Benedict just to see what kind of reaction they’d get. Very frustrating.

That said, I still think shows like Law & Order: SVU do A LOT more harm to the Church than a show like South Park.

Yes, they have trashed Jessie Jackson more than once.

I know from seeing interviews with the two guys who came up with this show that there is no hate in it at all. They actually think this stuff is funny. They think that stuff that offends most people is funny. I can see why you might think so in light of how much hate is directed at the Church but in this case you are wrong. These guys do not hate the church or anyone else. They just have a twisted sense of humor.
