he starts off the Mass “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of their Holy Spirit.”

on four occasions (at least) during the Mass, he replaces the word “Father” with “God” or “Creator.”

He refers to the Pope as the “Bishop of Rome.”

when he dismisses us, he does so “in the name of God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

if he ever returns, I won’t be sticking around.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diocese_of_Rome

The Diocese of Rome (Latin: Diœcesis Urbis or Diœcesis Romana, Italian: Diocesi di Roma), is a diocese of the Catholic Church, in Rome, Italy.[1] The bishop of Rome is the Pope, who is the Supreme Pontiff and leader of the Catholic Church. Established in the 1st century, its current bishop is Pope Benedict XVI, who acceded after the death of Pope John Paul II, in April 2005.

I really don’t see anything wrong with what he said, however if you don’t care for his mass or his style of preaching, by all means feel free to find another parish

write to the parish priest and bishop perhaps?

if only there was some sort of liturgical language that we could use to avoid these sort of ad libs…

you only responded to one part of it. and, yes, i absolutely take offense at him referring to the pope as the “bishop of rome” (that’s what anglicans call the pope!).

again, you only responded to part of it. he’s wrong to try to neuter God by not referring to him as “Father.”

also, the Holy Spirit doesn’t belong to the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is a co-equal member of the Trinity.

i spent half my time in Mass today focusing on how many times he would deviate from the text that the Church has approved. way too many times.

I may do that. I’m pretty steamed about it.

Another thing he did that really irritates me: He used the word “screwed” a couple of times in his homily. E.g., “We screwed up.” Totally inappropriate, and this was a life teen Mass.

Have you looked at the “new” missal they are introducing? God is pure spirit and neither male or female so they are replacing most of the gender references with God.

I prefer the image of a male God, however I think so many people have issues with this that the Church is reverting to an older version of the mass and going back to using God instead of a pronoun.

As to the 1st issue - are you sure you heard him correctly? It could have just been a slip.
On your last issue…the “Who Is” statement…I have been raised with that phrasing and I have no issue with it. God IS Father, Son and Holy Spirt. God is The Holy Trinity.

as to your issue with the Bishop referrence, I posted for you that in Rome he is a Bishop…so there is nothing improper about it.

I double checked the Wikipedia reference on the Encyclopedia here on Catholic.com and they also define Pope as the Bishop of Rome.

Before you write a heated letter to your Bishop, I suggest you do some research so as not to embarrass yourself.

yes, of course he is the bishop of rome. but why refer to him that way?

no, it was not a slip. in fact, the word “their” was the loudest word in the sentence.

not sure why you feel the need to defend this bizarre behavior.

i find this incredibly difficult to believe. i will investigate, though.

At least he was using a language that we know well enough to know when he was doing ad libs.

Have you looked at the “new” missal they are introducing? God is pure spirit and neither male or female so they are replacing most of the gender references with God. Yes, God is pure spirit. However, you are wrong about the rest. I have just looked at the new translation and they are not ‘replacing most gender references with God. A simple comparison with the current translation and the new translation shows that almost invariably, where “God” alone is used, it is also used currently, and where God is used followed by “the Father” (um, a ‘male’ noun) it is also used currently. IOW, there is no ‘gender replacement.’ I don’t know where you got the idea. In fact, many of the songs which were IMO ‘murdered’ with gender blender or "God’ified’ have been restored to their original glory.

I prefer the image of a male God, however I think so many people have issues with this that the Church is reverting to an older version of the mass and going back to using God instead of a pronoun. Again, you’re in error here. Could you please tell us where this idea came from outside of what you ‘think?’

He is also the Pope of Rome, and that title is ‘higher’ than that of Bishop. Why would a priest try to put the Pope ‘down’ in authority and make him only ‘one’ of many bishops?

That sounds a little odd to me, too. I don’t like it when people ad lib. Perhaps he was nervous, but if he did these things deliberately, it may be worth a letter to the bishop.

Or, is it possible he was a missionary visiting from a locale where that sort of thing is normal? 🤷

Even if so, I prefer solid language which doesn’t include improvisations or ‘fixing’ things (which aren’t broken). I hope things are taken care of in time.

Where did you get that idea? I just looked up the people’s parts on the USCCB reference to the new Missal. The word Father is used continuously as well as the male pronouns “His” or “Him”. There is only one time that the word His has been changed and its only because the structure of the sentance changes.
Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
changes to:
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will.
I think you may be confusing the new Missal translation with some of the new Bible translations that have come around lately. Some of them use more “gender inclusive” language.

Is this a joke? He is NOT the “Pope of Rome” there is no such thing. He is the Pope if the Catholic Church, but in Rome he is the Bishop. This is like saying he is the Pope of Texas…completly incorrect.

Here is the link to the side-by-side referrence to the changes coming

Yes indeed.

Please show us using examples how this supports your assertion that they are ‘changing’ the current translation from the use of male nounds (Father, His) to ONLY the ‘neutral’ God AND NOTHING ELSE?

I see God (often followed by Father), I see plenty of Father and Son, He and His). I don’t see any examples where “Father” has been changed to ONLY God, or where “God” has ‘supplanted’ He or His. . .

he was hardly nervous. he had a ton of self-confidence.

at one point in his homily, he lamented the fact that the ancient jewish religion was “patriarchical.” according to him, though, we have largely gotten past that. no doubt, that explains why he doesn’t like the word “Father.”
