Was God's wife edited out of the Bible? Atheist claims the Almighty had partner known as Asherah

I like this statement from the article:

*Dr Stavrakopoulou’s claims that God had a wife appeared to be backed up by her own research into the subject. *

She is her own authority and evidence! 😃 The above post gives the proper perspective into this theory. The obvious error this scholar makes is to approach the Bible devoid of God. If God did not exist, her perspective that she reads backwards into the some of the evidence sort of fits. What is absent, besides God, is why, if there was no God, would there ever be a supression of one god over another? The “how” of monotheist development in a godless vacuum makes no sense.

I would say that she needs to provide at least one manuscript prior to this supposed revision to have any real evidence. Of course this will never happen as there really is a God that led Israel through a lot of bumps and wrong turns through history.

Here is some proof “of that”. It doesn’t bode well that instead of considering there may be a flimsy link that you have instantly gone on the offensive and assumed there is no “evidence” of this goddess ever existed. Ye of little faith! Can you be that easily shaken by an atheist? 🤷

And thank you, Jharek.

So to sum up - yes this goddess did exist in Biblical times, but a source I found here on CAF stated that Baal was her mate, not Yahweh. This woman’s evidence is circumstantial at best.
I thought that these were all false gods.

An oxymoron.

An Atheist making difinitive statements about God (who Atheists say doesn’t exist).

uh huh.

God Bless you.

Most atheists do not claim that a man named Jesus Christ never existed as a historical figure. They do not think he or anyone else is God. It’s easy to see why when something is unknown people turn to a God for something they do not yet understand, such as the sun, rain, rainbows, etc. It’s also easy to see why in most religions their God happened to usually be a human like them and of their skin color, etc.

So, for starters, do you believe Baal is God?

I gotta run…I’ll be back later.

God Bless you.

No, Baal was a goa’uld who was defeated by the Tok’ra with some help fom the Tauri. 😃

CEM5 - Thank you, I am very excited :D!

I know a lot of people have responded to my posts so I’m sorry not to answer each one individually but I have read through the whole thread and clicked on the links. 🙂 This is all really interesting, and I do find it strange that an atheist has to use Biblical evidence to proof that God had a wife - even though she doesn’t believe in God. It’s just trying to attack Christians beliefs. Her evidence is shaky at best and she’s a Professor!

I’d never heard of Lilith before. So Lilith is the name given to the Changeling demon who steals babies? How did the Jews decide that Lilith was the name of the first women?

Going to have to do some more research on this. Maybe there’s a book or two someone can recommend? I like books. :o

I thought Lilith was Niles’ wife on Frasier.

No, I believe that was Maris (or more properly, “my Maris”) and then Mel and finally Daphne.

Lilith, was the wife of Frasier back when the two characters were part of an earlier television series called Cheers, which was set in a Boston bar. However, as his ex-wife she made a few appearances on the Frasier show.

Obviously, since I’m a Catholic, I find her wrong, but it isn’t fair to refer to her as “Atheist” claims such and such, when the real designation would be “Linguist” or “Scholar”.

Well, yes, but the headline was written by The Daily Mail and eye-grabbing headlines are not unusual for them.

I had to stop posting on a political board to which I belong, because of the tendency of people there to believe just about anything- including claims that are contradictory to themselves. For instance, one poster believed not only the “Baal married” theory, but that of the Ahmadiyya Muslims, who think Jesus was not crucified, went to India, got married and had children. And the neo-pagans on the board agreed with him. How is it possible that some people can believe everything at the same time?

From what I remember…Asherah was linked with the worship of Yahweh before the Exile. Various translations use different words instead of “Asherah”…“the asherah” were tree trunks or poles set next to the alter of Yahweh…some translate the word as “groves” instead of “poles”…her worship and the erection of her “poles” was forbidden…at later times…and finally after the Exile I believe, her worship and cult died out as Judah moved toward true monotheism.

The author/redactor of Deuteronomy in the 6th century BCE, forbids her worship. One of her titles was “queen of heaven”.

That Asherah was worshipped by Israel/Judah should come as no surprise…until after the Exile and Return…Israel was “henotheistic”…not “monotheistic”…Yahweh was seen as “God above all other gods” before Exile and then problaimed “The Only Living and True God”…“Before me was no god formed…nor is there after me…” I believe is how the writer of 2nd or 3rd Isaiah writes it.

She was portrayed as Yahweh’s consort by those who worshipped her…there are inscriptions that mention “Yahweh and His Asherah” together…as Israel/Judah moved toward true monotheism…she lost her followers in Israel.

A leading academic has claimed that God has a wife who was edited out of the Bible.

Atheist Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou says that the Almighty, known as Yahweh, had a partner called Asherah who was worshipped.

It is worth noting that atheists are twisting the scholarship. It is debated as to whether or not a female “wife” of YHWH was worshiped, BUT (and this is a really important but!) even if it were so, it would only be amongst the commoners - the priestly class was probably ALWAYS monotheistic, or so says current scholarship! Which just goes to show how the people of the time kept turning their backs on God and slipping into polytheism.

Neither the Jews, nor the Christians that followed them, ever worshiped any deity but GOD in their religions. From time to time, people fell away from their religion, and began following pagan beliefs, and some of the pagans did indeed believe in multiple Gods and Goddesses.

But, this was NEVER the case in Judaism or in Christianity.

Your “friend” is badly mistaken ,and only proves that he/she knows absolutely nothing about either the Jewish or Christian faiths.

In the third and last show in this series

Can we find the Garden of Eden? Bible scholar Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou thinks so. In the final episode of her series re-examining conventional readings of the Bible, she argues that the Garden of Eden has nothing to do with the origins of humanity, but is rather a story concealing dramatic events about a particular figure in a particular place, two and half thousand years ago.

Marshalling compelling evidence from archaeology, Islam and the Bible text itself, she identifies and visits the exact site of Eden.

It’s a revolutionary theory which challenges some of the most cherished preconceptions about Eden in both Christianity and western culture.

A bit of an understatement 😛

HURRAH FOR THE BLACKSHIRTS! During Hitler’s rise to power comes to mind.

Actually, the Bible says that the Jews did worship other gods from time to time, but that only God (Yahweh) was the real one and that it was wrong to worship any others. Some Christians may have worshipped other gods before they were Christian, of course, but probably the Greco-Roman gods rather than Asherah and the other semitic gods.
