When one is asked “Was Jesus a Palestinian?” one must wonder what the questioner is really trying to discover. If the question is, “Was Jesus born in the region often called Palestine?” then the answer is “yes.” If the question is, “Was Jesus born of the same ethnicity as the people now known as ‘Palestinians?’” then the answer is “no.”
If one really wants to answer this question, however, one must first answer the question, “What is a Palestinian?” One answer is that a Palestinian is any person, Arab or Jew, whose family has lived in modern Israel, the West Bank, or Gaza Strip, since before the Zionist movement and the emigration of outside Jews to the land. Another answer is that this applies exclusively to the pre-Zionist Arab population. Yet another answer is that any Arab, including one from Jordan, Egypt, Iraq or anywhere else, can start calling themselves a Palestinian the minute they set foot in the land often called “Palestine.”
The “Jesus was a Palestinian” assertion is often used by certain Islamic groups in an attempt to cause Christians, both Arab and others, to have sympathy for the Arab Palestinian movement and to oppose the state of Israel.
