When Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem without telling His parents, was He disobedient? If not, why?

Jesus response to his parents was that they should have known where he was. Then he went back to Nazareth with them. So it was a misunderstanding, no disobedience.

Perhaps He was disobedient to his parents, but He was certainly obedient to God. In situations in which God asks us to do one thing, and our parents ask us to do another, incompatible thing, of course it is God’s Will that takes precedence, even if the parents do not understand that or do not like it. That’s pretty much the explanation Jesus Himself gives w.r.t. the incident you ask about. (Luke 2:48-50)

According to old Jewish tradition 12 years child enters adulthood, a milestone which is reached at the approximate age when the body reaches maturity.so Jesus was not disobedient ,he was doing the will of his Father,he who gave the law, will he not obey the law? certainly

Luke 2:49 He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he said to them. 51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.

Right. We think of a 12-year-old as a child, but I’m the culture of that time, where people were married and raising a family by their mid-teens, 12 was the beginning of adulthood. Jesus was doing God’s will. His earthly parents didn’t know or didn’t understand what he was doing.

Mary in particular always conformed her will to that of God, so she would not have asked Jesus to do something not in accordance with God’s will. It’s more likely she just didn’t know he was planning to stay behind, rather than she told him to go with the caravan and he disobeyed.

Since Joseph, unlike Mary, did not always conform his will perfectly to God’s, It’s possible Jesus disobeyed Joseph to do God’s will; it’s also possible that Joseph, like Mary, just assumed Jesus would leave when they did and didn’t give Jesus any direct order to leave.

One thing is for sure, if there was any blame to go around it would have been on St. Joseph.
Poor guy. When something goes wrong you look at your wife and see Mary smiling at you, then you look at your son and see Jesus smiling at you. You are forced to come to the conclusion that it was your fault…again. 🙂

He was thoughtless .

He could have had the decency to inform Mary and Joseph of what he was going to do to avoid the anxiety he caused them .

He was 12 years old and human. At 12, you don’t have fully developed prudential judgment yet, even if Jewish society considered you an adult or nearly an adult.

Also, God willed this to happen in order to foreshadow Mary “losing” Jesus for 3 days when he died and finding him again when he rose.

It seems pretty inherently obvious to me, but here’s Jimmy Akin to confirm the foreshadowing for you.
Again, note the foreshadowing: The three days echo the three days (or, more precisely, parts of three days) that Jesus spent in the tomb, during which Mary and the disciples were deprived of Jesus’ presence but then found him again “on the third day” (cf. Lk. 9:22).

Also, it would have to be God’s will, because Jesus always did God’s will, always.

Jesus is God. Rule maker rule breaker. No one else is but Him. When the Rabbis asked why he did not respect Sabbath what did he reply?

No, they were responsible, in stewardship to God, for the gift (Himself), and they lost sight of Him, and it took them several days of deep sorrow and searching to find Him again (spiritual lesson).

Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Luk_2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

Gal_4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

  1. We either believe in God, or we do not.
  2. If we believe, God is either perfect or He is not.
  3. If he is not perfect, He is not God.
  4. God either had a Son or He did not.
  5. If God had a Son, then that Son is also perfect.
  6. Disobedience is a flaw, a sin.
  7. Therefore, what Jesus did was not disobedience.
In all matters pertaining to apparent conflicts, inconsistencies or contradictions in our faith, we are well advised to doubt ourselves first.
