Its impossible to say for sure…
why would anyone even ask? are their brownie* points for being white? I’ll grant that the questioner is innocent, but the thread title is near scandal because of the connotations of race baiting.

some casual web surfer comes onto this forum and sees a long, extended discussion over whether Jesus was “white”, what on earth is he or she going to think except the obvious: for some reason, this is important over there.

*no pun intended, seriously.

Its impossible to say for sure.

But I prayed to see what he was like and saw
Dark olive skin, black ringlet curls long hair, oiled.
Big black oval eyes.
And sight that could see right into me.

It was different to what I expected, and very close I was shocked & ‘jumped’ at seeing it.

I was convinced. I’m not trying to convince anyone else though.
Thank you for sharing. 🙂

Years ago during the 1980’s I was travelling with a school girlfriend (whom I had not seen for a few years until we discovered that both of us were living in the same City). She offered me a lift back to our home town. While chatting for the 5 or 6 hour drive, she pulled out a photo (no mobiles or digital cameras back then here) of Jesus in the clouds over our home town that her sister or someone in the family (I cannot recall) had taken. Where this photo is today I have no idea and whether or not it was ever put on to the internet I do not know!

I clearly recall that Jesus face was the most incredibly beautiful face and His garments White. I must try and track down this old school friend to find out if anyone has kept the photo. I was only mentioning this story (and its not a lie) to my grown up Children last week to be honest and nothing surprised them about the photo! Older people who have endured a great deal more in their lives or have been hurt a great deal more and lost faith in Jesus can be cynical and disbelieving. I find that many young people who have not communicated as yet with God, and upon hearing different stories from Christians, do believe easily.
Wait! It was an actual man over the town? Did it look like a spirit or a man? Are you sure that someone in her family could have taken that photo and it wasn’t a store-bought photo? I know my mom had store-bought photographs of celebrities back in the 80s. If that was a real picture, that would be so awesome, though!

Jesus could have been polka-dot for all we know. The important thing is what he said and did (preaching and working miracles and then dying for our sins)
He wasn’t polka-dotted because he didn’t stand out of the people at the time. He was an ordinary-looking man, living in that time in that region of the world.

I read a book some time ago, the name escapes me now, which made a very telling statement about color being used as a racial identifier. The book was set in the future and included a dictionary of sort of old time racial terms. It went as follows

White: An old time raciai identifier. From the skin color which ranged from white to black.
Black: An old time raciai identifier. From the skin color which ranged from white to black
Red: An old time raciai identifier. From the skin color which ranged from white to black
Brown: An old time raciai identifier. From the skin color which ranged from white to black
Yellow: An old time raciai identifier. From the skin color which ranged from white to black

I never saw anything any truer in print concerning the use of skin color as a racial identifier.👍

All of the picture I have or have seen of Jesus he is white or of fair skin. But aren’t a lot of people in that part of the world brown-skinned? Or am I wrong? Is it possible Jesus was brown? Just curious. It’s something a friend pointed out to me last year and has haunted me ever since. What do you guys think?
I have read the description of mystics on the appearance of the Virgin Mary. One vision has her described as having auburn hair and blue eyes. Probably Jesus also had the same coloring. I don’t know which particular mystic but I think it was the Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich.

I might be wrong.

yes.

I think the thread title is s near scandal.

I think most pictures and icons of Jesus are pretty close. His description has been handed down and even revealed to certain saints. They’re pretty close. I think the only discrepancy is the eye color: blue or brown [or both?].

As far as He or His message, He said, “Whoever loses his life for my sake or the sake of my Gospel shall find it.”

So, it’s BOTH He and His Message that are important. Also, his works. He said, “If you don’t believe [me], then believe because of [my works].”

There’s only one race, the Human Race.

One people under God.

After reading all the previous post, this clip from the Cosby Show came to mind… Does the shade of the skin of Jesus really matter?

It’s the artist conception… Look at pictures of the Crucifixion prior to the finding of the Shroud of Turin; the nails were in the palm of the hand, now most artist place the nails in the wrist. (( Artist conception ))

No it doesn’t since we are all in His image. But that’s no fun.

I’m learning that Jesus really didn’t look like any of the Jewish people of today. Things like that. You JUST don’t get that kind of amazing knowledge anywhere else. :dancing::extrahappy:

*Bless me father I have sinned. I was indirectly snarky in a public place today …
and that’s not the worst of things … (closes the confessional door). *

Yes. I knew I worded that wrong. I couldn’t think of the term Arab when I posted that. Thank you.
I will never hear that song “Killing an Arab” again … without thinking of the Passion*.
  • That is actually a better idea that it was a joke! :hmmm:

Thread titles being scandalous is nothing new. The rule for posting news stories is one must copy down the title as it is in the often biased news media. Which often tells you what to think about the story you are about to read (and wrongly in the near scandalous ones, IMO).

Was Jesus white? It does look silly. And has brought out my silly side. “White” people tan up pretty good where the sun shines more. 🤷

Thought the accidental pun was appropriate given the loopiness of the topic. 👍😃

The Jews were a Semitic people of the Middle East, as many have pointed out. From what I understand, DNA tests of modern Jews of European descent show a “mixed” heritage, of European and Middle-Eastern DNA. Darker-skinned, “Semitic-looking” individuals of European Jewish descent often fascinate me, for this reason, because their appearance is comparatively more Middle Eastern. One could also say that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish them from particularly dark-skinned Italians.

Jews of more Semitic appearance would include, in my mind, individuals such as:

–Jeff Goldblum
–Franz Kafka
–Judd Nelson
–Dustin Hoffman (especially as he appeared in The Graduate, very well-tanned, almost a doppelganger for a young Al Pacino)
–Charles Denner (a French actor of Polish-Jewish origin, who resembled Italian-American actor Frank Vincent)
–Adam Goldberg (only half Jewish, but very Semitic in appearance, in my mind)
–Hank Azaria (of Sephardic Jewish ancestry; his parents are from Greece)
–Ron Silver (another Pacino look-alike)

It is likely that Jesus appeared more like one of these individuals, thus indeed darker than he is usually portrayed in European art. As he appeared to have spent most of time outdoors, under a baking Palestinian sun, his darkness probably would have been that much more striking.
