Jesuit live as communities. At our school there are about 7 priests and brothers who:thumbsup:t live in the middle of the school in a very small residence and small dorm rooms. They live, work, teach, and pray together as a community.

They are highly educated and are known as teachers all over the world.

They take vows or poverty and humility, so for those of us raised by the Jesuit, this is quite a shock, but I truly think God was fully behind this decision and knew what the church needed.

I expect this Pope to be kind, compassionate, forgiving and soft, but speak his mind when needed. The Jesuit are just so wonderful.

I believe Georgetown was founded as a Jesuit university. In 2013, it bears little resemblance to a Catholic institution of higher learning. I don’t know how strong a presence the Jesuits currently maintain at GU.

Cardinal Bergoglio, 76, was elevated to the College of Cardinals on February 21, 2001, in Rome. He was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires. Ordained a priest for the Jesuits in 1969, he was ordained a bishop in 1992. He was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1997, succeeding Cardinal Antonio Quarracino on February 28, 1998.

The election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who has taken the name Francis I, marks a great milestone in our church. As successor to Peter, our first pope, Pope Francis I stands as the figure of unity for all Catholics wherever they reside. The bishops of the United States and the people of our 195 dioceses offer prayers for our new leader and promise allegiance to him.

I watched it live, very exciting. This was my first conclave since being received into the Church, I never really paid attention to the previous ones.

There have been non-white Popes, just not recently.

But yes he is white, basically.
 
From what I’ve read so far, it looks like Francis I will be calling on us to be more aware of our inter-connectivity with our brothers and sisters in Christ. His example of self-denial and selfless giving towards others is going to be a rock-solid opportunity for all of us to live out the Gospel in a deeper, more multi-cultural and fraternal way. All this while maintaining a sense of orthodoxy!

This caught me completely by surprise!
We couldn’t believe when the cardinal who presented our Holy Father said: Cardinal Bergoglio.
We are so happy here in Argentina!
The ranks near to the government are loathing due to this, but now, almost the whole of the opposition is rejoicing thanks to this election!
Not only he was my first choice if I’d chose the Pope (not because he is Argentine, but due to his views), but he was great back here, all the things he did.
Thank God for giving us the new successor to St. Peter!

It’s on the home page just above the list of members online. I wish we had the count from the election of Pope Benedict XVI but the number must have been reset sometime after that to better reflect typical user activity.

I couldn’t get this thread to refresh at about the time Pope Francis stepped foot on the balcony.
 
So he speaks Spanish, Italian and possible German since he studied here. Now the billion dollar question: does he speak English?

Wow, that is one of the things I wondered: How Argentinians (and the government) taking the news?

Did Francis have a good relationship with President Kirchner?
 
I don’t know much about how being a Jesuit or a Religious would affect the new Pope, but I read that he personally chose not to live in the Bishop’s mansion (which is quite lavish) and chose instead to live in a small apartment. He declined the limo and chooses to ride public transportation, and he cooks his own food.

Of course, all that will change now that he is Pope.

I imagine this is a great day for many Religious - its been a long time since we had a Religious elected to Pope.
 
I love our new Holy Father, Pop Francis! 🙂

He is faithful to the teachings of the Church and his humility was obvious. I loved the traditional prayers. He bowed from the waste when he asked us to pray for him. He definitely loves the poor!

So as to clarify my first post:

The picture that now has replaced a picture (which previously showed him to be Cardinal Jorge) is now replaced with Pope Francis I standing in his white papal garments waving.

Prior to my first posting he was seated in his white papal garments underwhich was the title, ‘His Holiness’.
 
Some young women from Argentina were saying that the next World Youth Day in the Americas would be extraordinary.
 
With the super computer that the Jesuits keep in the basement of the Vatican so that they can secretly run the world, it was only a matter of time until they dropped the pretenses and came out in the open. 😃
