My question (or fear) is this:

Is a 76 year old man with one lung, best known for kissing and washing the feet of AIDS patients, the kind of man who is willing and able to go into battle against the sin and immorality of an increasingly secular western society?

We’ll see. As I said, I have good hopes…but also some fears.

The commentators on our TV stations went very quiet. After pontificating their general secular ideals for electing the new Pope, i.e. ‘the new Pope will be a young man’, most likely from Europe, yada, yada - all their secular nonsense FAILED big time.

God chooses the Pope - you’d have thought they would have cottoned on to this by now!

Google the two words “Jesuit” and “liberal” and read the ensuing mass of information. Theoretically, I share your concerns, but remain faithful to the idea that Pope Francis’ election was truly guided by the Holy Spirit.

His statements against homosexual “marriage” and homosexual adoption have been quite strong. And right on the mark.

It is my impression (granted, without a lot of background) that he is not all that impressed with western secular society.
 
My first thought is that, just maybe, we’ll see at least a decrease in the number of Jesuit-bashing threads around here.

Yessir. Some of the (non-Malchus) prophecies (if they are to be believed–in this case I truly hope so) speak of him as reuniting Christianity.🙂

I have been saying since the announcement of Benedict’s resignation that it would not matter who was elected Pope - God has his plans for his Church and is still in charge. We need to remember, however, that the Lord’s ways are not our ways and whatever course the Church takes in the future, despite our personal opinion, will eventually be to His glory.
 
I have no thoughts, but I do have a question. I have been reading in various sources (all non-Catholic) that Cardinal Bergoglio (now Pope Francis I) has taken a “more moderate stance of contraception”, believing that it is alright to prevent the spread of disease. Can anyone validate or dispel that claim?

Maybe that is HIS way of “going to battle” as you put it. That is one way that Jesus lived his life. Good enough for you?

Eh, I don’t like this language of “going to battle” as if there is something inherently violent about the mission of the Church.
 
I wasn’t overwhelmed by the elections of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, but I grew to love and admire both tremendously over the course of their individual papacies. I feel somewhat the same way today. I pray that Pope Francis will succeed as well as his immediate predecessors.
 
All of the Jesuit conspiracy theories (especially the Jack Chick types) have just been confirmed.😛
