I believe he chose his name to re-build the Church’s credibility.

As a humble and simple man, he would probably want to reorganize and rebuild the Roman Curia from the rubble that it is right now after VatiLeaks, Corruption scandals, and Abuse scandals.
I rarely like what the BBC has to say about the Catholic Church and our Popes but, this morning, the Holy Father was referred to as “a man with a spine of steel”. Needless to say, I will treat BBC as a friend today.

I’m glad to share in this moment. I’m excited to see what the first Jesuit pope will accomplish (I was educated at Jesuit institutions).

People are wondering about Pope Francis and the Latin mass

Pope Francis promotes Summorum Pontificum of Pope Benedict XVI
The very first thing Archbishop Bergoglio did after the publishing of Summorum Pontificum of Pope Benedict XVI was to promote the Traditional Latin Mass, the Extraordinary Form, in his Archdiocese, immediately directing that a chapel, to start with, be set up for this end.

Just in case you were wondering.

Translated from Spanish -

He returned the Latin Mass, with women covered by blankets
Four decades after the Latin Mass with the priest facing the altar officiating was replaced by the office in the language of each country and facing the faithful, the old way of celebrating was restored yesterday at a church in Buenos Aires. It was before hundreds of worshipers eager to participate in the traditional way.
The celebration took place 48 hours after Pope Benedict XVI signed the decree (motu proprio) that releases this modality. Until Friday, the Latin mass required approval of the bishop, that process is no longer necessary. From now on, to an order of the faithful, the priest must access.
However, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, arranged a fixed holding jurisdiction for the faithful locals offer a specific place and avoid the problem that many priests do not know oficiarla.
The parish is St. Michael the Archangel, in the downtown. His pastor, DOther Ricardo, is an expert in liturgy. Had to dust off the latest version of the old missal, 1962, provide for the altar, put six candles instead of two and achieve an organist who knew the old songs.
“In nomine Patris, et Spiritus Sancti et Filii” said DOther after 10, when reciting the sign of the cross with the start of the trade. Faithful mostly adults and the elderly, but also some young, blanketed several women, and almost all with missal, followed him with unction. Women were also quite long skirts. Was striking a family with three girls, all blanket.
Many attendees seemed very knowledgeable about the ancient liturgy. Even, not lacking some who slipped some discomfort because the celebration was not, in his view, entirely by the old way and mixed with modern elements.
Communion was received kneeling at the altar and in the mouth. There was no sign of peace, or prayer of the faithful, or offertory procession. “This way of celebrating Mass greatly enriched the celebration because it takes into account the elements of an ancient liturgical tradition,” said Fabian leaving, 45. In turn, Carolina, 21, student of philosophy, thus considered “spiritually uplifting me more.”
DOther Father in his homily did not mention the way the celebrated. Then, asked journalists not to say that is the Tridentine Mass, but “how extraordinary Roman rite.” So he sought to narrow the controversy surrounding his rehabilitation.

It is disturbing, and if you would like to understand why, I would politely and respectfully encourage you to take the time to read what the Church has traditionally taught on interfaith prayer services, in particular allowing non-Catholics to lead such prayer or, in this case acting as if some protestant minister has the power to bless you in anyway. When you have the time, there are dozens of threads you can look to on here if you are curious to do so. The simple truth of the matter is that protestants who call themselves ministers have no more ability to bless anyone than you or I do. He could have asked them to pray to God so that God would bless him, as he did today when he requested that of the faithful, but to bow down and receive a false blessing is indeed disturbing.

As I noted above, I do not know the context of the photo, so I am giving our Holy Father the benefit of the doubt, as I am with the Mass video which was shared earlier.

As for the rest, I recommend not reading that webpage, it contains of bunch of drivel and vitriol which is not deserving of your time. I personally wish I had never seen it as it has done nothing but cause me consternation.
I’ll tell you right now it disturbs me as well. I have a husband who is questioning our Church and this sort of thing will NOT help in bringing about reinstating his full faith in the Church. It is one of the main reasons why I was praying for a Pope that was orthodox in every way. THis picture and the comment about contraceptiion indeed worries me. I didn’t see the Mass video you are referring to and I’m not sure I want to now.

I think you’re right. This Pope promises to be unequivocal in all the issues that the media opposes the most.

Maybe it’s the fact that he’s a Jesuit. The media may have a warped notion that all Jesuits are liberal thinkers. I was taught by Jesuits; I think that reputation is undeserved, and comes from a handful of liberal Jesuits. One reason I think there has never been a Jesuit Pope is because part of their rule is to never seek office or rank.

I read that this Pope, Francis, when he was in contention with Benedict last election, made a plea to his fellow cardinals not to vote for him [Jorge Bergogli]; if true, that is quite a commendation. .
I think you hit the nail on the head here. This is what I am seeing in secular circles.

I have no thoughts, but I do have a question. I have been reading in various sources (all non-Catholic) that Cardinal Bergoglio (now Pope Francis I) has taken a “more moderate stance of contraception”, believing that it is alright to prevent the spread of disease. Can anyone validate or dispel that claim?

Been looking this up and I can only find one source which says now Pope Francis is moderate on contraception and that is the Guardian. The Guardian gives no reference for this, so without evidence it is a baseless statement. Any other site that has mentioned him having a moderate stance has cited The Guardian as the source. All the other news sites say he is staunchly anti-contraception and they point out how he fought against president Cristina Fernandez when she promoted free contraceptives and artificial insemination.
That does help relieve some of my concerns. One paper’s “quote” is not necessarily true.

I chose “Neither - reluctant” since we know so little about him, and there are so many conflicting reports about his views and his leadership style. Let’s say I am “cautiously optimistic”. Whatever the case may be, he is my Supreme Pontiff and he needs our continual prayers. May God bless Pope Francis! :crossrc:

I keep hearing everyone say the Spirit chose him. We can only hope so. The Spirit does not elect the Pope, nor does he force the cardinals to elect the right man.

Besides, we do not follow men. We follow Christ and His Church. We have God’s promise that even if they elect the worst Pope possible that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church.
The election of the pope is a spiritual matter - you really do not believe that the Spirit influences men of prayer while Catholics the world over have been on their knees since the announcement of Benedict’s resignation? Of course in this age we have reason to be concerned, but regardless of the man, you are correct the Church is indefectible - and in a state of purification, no matter the suffering that will come or the trials to be endured. God uses all things to His Good and Glory.

I was very happy to see a news channel (which is not Catholic(!)) have as headline:

The World has a new Pope!

Like the title of this thread: “We have Pope”. The “we” does not only refer to us Catholics, but rather, the World! 👍

I’m not sure how much He trusts man, but He does agree to take whoever we elect Pope and work with him. We’ve had some pretty bad ones in our long history, but Christ kept his promise and did not allow the gates of hell to prevail.
The bad ones also have their roles. They got the Papacy for a reason, same as the good ones.

I had heard that our current Pope finished 2nd in the 2005 Conclave on the news. If this is true I would like to know how this is common knowledge as the only one’s who would have known about this is the College of Cardinals and they did swear an oath to not divulge ANY information about the Conclave?

It could have been from a leaked document and not necessarily that a Cardinal revealed this information. It’s just rumour anyways.

YEs, everyone involved in the conclave swears an oath of secrecy. However, someone may had said more than they should. Also, over time, reporters and others could possible piece together little bits said here and there by a variety of people and built this conclusion. If you notice, all reports about that say things like “it is generally thought” or “some say…” In other words no reporter knows for sure and no one who was in the conclave is confirming. But after we read about it in 4 or 5 different places, everyone believes it is the absolute truth. 🤷

Documents don’t just leak anywhere and since the ballots are burned either way it would have come from a person who swore an oath that bears excommunication upon penalty.

Far too often, that is the case. With anything, if you say it often enough, the low information folks believe it.
