It’s not as if the Holy Spirit lands on the head of each cardinal. Cardinals are expected to discern what the Church most needs and prayerfully assess who among them seems to possess the gifts that are best suited to those needs. To that end, there are meetings held in advance of the conclave, liturgies and prayer. The “politicking” and speculating seems to me to occur apart from the cardinals.
Ever heard of Pope Fabian?

Couldnt resist:D I agree with you though about politics.

likening opposition to abortion to opposition to the death penalty
This is huge, especially for those who still support the death penalty.
Yeah, don’t get too excited about that until you see the rest of the quote and know what he says about the death penalty. Because what the Church teaches is right there in black and white in the Catechism and we all know it’s allowed by the Church in the right circumstances.

If the Holy Spirit could do whatever He wants then the Church would not be in the state it is in. I hardly think the Holy Spirit would choose for priest to hurt children or cheat others. Again, they have to be open to the Holy Spirit to be holy men.
You have just made the point that there are two distinct elements…human and Divine. The Spirit does not force, but opens hearts with grace which counteracts human resistance to His will…

New Pope was not an accomplice of the Argentine dictatorship
Fr. Lombardi also made reference to a declaration made by Nobel Prize winner, Perez Esquivel, “who is known for not being in favour of the Church”: “There were bishops who were accomplices of the dictatorship, but Bergoglio was not one of them.”

‘Bergoglio had no links with the dictatorship,’ Peace Nobel Prize winner
Peace Nobel Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, assured today that elected pope Jorge Bergoglio "had no links with the dictatorship” that ruled Argentina between the years 1976-1983 as he’s been accused for many years.
Speaking to BBC News, Perez Esquivel said that “there were bishops who were accomplices of the dictatorship, but it was not the case of Bergoglio.”
“Bergoglio was questioned because it is said he did not do enough to get out of jail two priests, as he was the Superior of the Jesuits. But I know personally that many bishops called on the military junta for the release of prisoners and priests and these requests were not granted”, said Perez Esquivel.
Bergoglio association with the dictatorship was related to the testimony of María Elena Funes, a catechist who was detained at the ESMA, following the arrest and subsequent disappearance of two Jesuit priests.

That was great!!! I don’t remember seeing Pope Benedict shown laughing that much in the eight years he was Pope. I like that Pope Francis like to laugh. He really very likable so far.🙂
Pope Benedict joked, but it was different such as commenting to Cardinal Dolan’s mom that she didn’t look old enough to be the mother of a Cardinal and things like that. I have heard him make some other comments that were jokes also, but he always seemed a bit more shy to me.

So when the appearance of a disgraced cardinal threatened to cast a shadow over his first engagement, Francis I made sure it couldn’t happen again – by banning him from his own church.
Cardinal Bernard Law resigned as Archbishop of Boston in 2002, after being accused of actively covering up for a litany of paedophile priests.’
Despite the scandal which exploded to engulf the entire church, he was given an honorary position at the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, in Rome.
Though now retired, the cardinal still enjoys a grace and favour apartment in the cathedral complex. So hearing that the new Pope was offering prayers at the very same church, it seems he couldn’t resist a discreet peak.
But when Pope Francis recognised him, he immediately ordered that Law be removed, according to Italian media reports. He went on to command: ‘He is not to come to this church any more.’
One of the new Pope’s first acts will be to arrange new ‘cloistered’ accommodation for the disgraced cardinal, the Italian daily, Il Fatto Quotidiano, reported.

Hopefully Pope Francis will not become more introvert as time goes on. I wonder if he really had a clue to how closely he was being watch with every move he has made. I guess he will know if he reads the paper or YouTube. Hopefully he finds better things to do than that. I wonder if he Twitters?

@pontifex was BXVI’s twitter and the vatican has said the account will be at the discretion of the new Pope. My bet is he will twitter. Which I think is kind of silly. But seems to be the norm for releasing important information. you know, like theology…

I dont remember him laughing but his sly smile gave me great joy. Almost as if he and I shared a little inside joke. I miss Papa Ben already but look forward with great joy for the personal touches of this Pope!!!

With LGBT groups and the LCWR eagerly awaiting arrangements for Vatican III, how else are you going to spread the word about time/location/who’s bringing what? You think anyone wants to be embarrassed by bringing the same cheesecake?

Facebook status. “It’s complicated”😉

We do such a disservice to the youth of today by assuming and expecting only the lowest common denominator from them. In my opinion we do not need rock music or rap at Mass, we do not need “youcat” we do not need to spread the gospel by twitter.
What we need is Truth spoken with Joy and without fear. This generation THIRSTS for God and we give vinegar to them in 40 characters or less.🤷

It is finished…

YouCat is a perfectly serviceable catechism.

Perhaps. But when teens crack open a world history book, physics book, biology book, calculus book etc… it is not dumbed down like youcat. Most of the teens I have worked with find it condescending and insulting. BUT there have been a few that it benefited it is not for everyone and in my opinion is NOT deep at all.

Youcat is a catechism. I think that is all that I will say about it.😉

I’ve noticed that we can ridicule those who are traditional, that like a certain form of the Mass, who believe in modesty. Who try to raise kids that are moral and follow the teachings of the Church but we dare not have a negative opinion on lifeteen, youcat, or anything else.🤷

Youcat is a valid approved catechism. The OF is a valid Mass. Lifeteen is a Valid ministry.
that does not mean that it is the best thing ever or that it is for everyone.
