Wear a Scapular?

Requirements for our Lady of Mount Carmel scapular ???

  1. *]is there a difference in getting your scapular blessed and being enrolled in the carmilite lay order
    *]is the rite of blessing in both cases thus different?
    *]Does the priest who says the blessing have to be a Carmilite/or authorised by them,

    my main question effectively is, is there an internet site where Ican download the prayers and take it to my parish priest for him to enrol me?

Pope John Paul II?

It seems to resemble pics I’ve seen of him as a youth.

So, I am wondering, am I still enrolled even though after all these years, I never wore the scapular? Is it now simply a matter of having a scapular blessed (I have one that a friend gave me a few years ago, new and still in its little package), or should I re-enroll?

You don’t need to re-enroll, and you don’t need to have it blessed. It all carries for life. The only thing you didn’t get from it are all the indulgences because you didn’t wear one.

  1. Ditto with me too. Can anyone tell me about this??
 
I have a great friend who gave me some inforamtion about scapulars. I wore one as a child for awhile but never understood why.

My friend bought one for me. I had it for months and did much praying and then…I took the plunge. I went to my priest last summer, had him bless it. and been wearing it ever since!

I love it. It reminds me of our Lady and her Son Jesus. My girls like to take it out and kiss it!
 
I was enrolled this Sunday!!! YES! 😃 🙂
It’s such a great feeling to know that Mary has clothed you in her love.

When I was enrolled, I was told that the scapular must be brown, made of cloth and have a square in the front and back. I was told that a medal was not the same and couldn’t be used as a substitute for the cloth scapular. Was I misinformed?

When you are enrolled, you must have a cloth scapular. No exceptions. After that, you still should wear the cloth scapular unless you have a good reason not to. Pope John Paul II said that replacing it because of vanity or fear of people “talking” isn’t a good reason because it’s selfish and you take on the possibility of losing the Sabbetine Privelage (if that’s what you’re aiming for).
 
This thread caused me to look into the scapular a little closer and I was on what looked like a very informative, official- sounding website which claimed that the wool requirement has been dropped and one could wear the medal as opposed to the scapular. Anyone have sources with the “officlal” answer? Thanks.

In 1910, Pope Saint Pius X introduced a scapular medal which may be substituted in most cases for any of the various scapulars. Valid enrollment in the scapulars must, however, be made before the substitution.

The decree, in translation, reads thus:

"For the future all the faithful already inscribed or who shall be inscribed in one or other of the real Scapulars approved by the Holy See (excepting those which are proper to the Third Orders) by what is known as regular enrollment may, instead of the cloth scapulars, one or several, wear on their persons, either round the neck or otherwise, provided it be in a becoming manner, a single medal of metal, through which, by the observance of laws laid down for each scapular, they shall be enabled to share in and gain all the spiritual favors (not excepting what is known as the Sabbatine Privilege of the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), and all the privileges attached to each.

“The right side of this medal must show the image of Our Most Holy Redeemer, Jesus Christ, showing His Sacred Heart, and the obverse that of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. It must be blessed with a separate blessing for each of the scapulars in which the person has been enrolled and for which the wearer wishes it to suffice. Finally, these separate blessings may be given by a single sign of the cross , whether in the act of enrollment or later at the convenience of those enrolled, it matters not how long after the enrollment or in what order they may have taken place; the blessing may be given by a priest other than the one who made the enrollment, as long as he possesses the faculty, ordinary, or delegated, of blessing the different scapulars- the limitations, clauses, and conditions attached to the faculty he uses still holding their force. All things to the contrary, even those calling for special mention, notwithstanding” (Holy Office, Rome, December 16, 1910).
 
The scapular is a wonderful blessing to anyone who loves Our Lady. I beleive there are 13 approved scapulars of the Church: the Carmelite one is the most popular.
Did you know that technically a scapular consists of two wool peices of cloth joined by a set of strings. You can even make your own, although the Rose Scapular Co. has some pretty nice ones pre-made.

Yes, they are uncomfortable - at least just a little, but that’s part of your penance! Mary said she would bless us if we wear it and if John Paul the 2nd wore one… why don’t you?

Remember the words of St. Max: ‘Love the Immaculata… for as much as you lover Her: you can never love her as much as our Lord Jesus Christ!’ The scapular is a sign that we trust in her sweet and loving prayers. What a wonderful devotion and blessing!
 
Btw, I am a Lay Carmelite, which is why I have the inside scope on on the scapular. 😃

I am wearing a crucified in a chain on the outside and I find that when I wear a scapular, they get all entangled around my neck, even if I keep the scapular inside. Is there a Scapular medal in existence? Is this allowed? I feel that if I am wearing the Scapular, I might as well follow this to the letter, or what is the point? Also, do you just ask a priest to bless it? Do you have to be enrolled in a formal way?

I voted ‘No’ in the poll. The reason is that I wear a Miraculous Medal instead. It was a toss up between the Scapular and the Miraculous Medal, but I felt a deep peace at the thought of the Medal, so that’s the way I went. My son now wears the Miraculous Medal too, I’m pleased to say, but I’d have been just as pleased if he had chosen the Scapular.
 
No, but I used to wear a Miraculous Medal and I hope to wear it again as soon as possible.
 
I LOVE scapulars. They are full of beautiful symbolism. I love Our Lady too. Unfortunately, though, I no longer wear one. The cloth is too itchy and I have sensitive skin. No can do. :nope:

PRAISE GOD, I don’t have too much problem wearing a pure metal medalion. So I wear the Miraculous Medal in honor of Mary instead. 👍
