Wear a Scapular?

I have tried to wear one off and on. But I have found the scapular pretty uncomfortable. Ridiculous I know. It twists around and often I have to readjust it. So I end up wearing it more often then not. Can I wear the Scapular Medal instead and do I need to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular first and wear that. I guess I just realized that I don’t think I have been enrolled. What is the Five-fold Scapular? I never heard of it. So I would take it off for the shower and I guess swimming. This may seem like a really ridiculous question but do I take the Scapular off during intimate times with my husband? During sports? I know someone who wucks her Scapular in her bra instead of wearing it around her neck. Are the graces the same?

I readjust mine all the time 🙂 It’s even worse with two - wear enough, and you could be strangled​

What some enterprising person should do is produce plastic covers for them so that they wouldn’t get waterlogged - that would be far better than wearing the medal 🙂 ##

I was lucky, my priest had the proper prayers available. I believe you can also find them on the internet for him.

But, if you have the blessing of a close Carmelite Order, why the sigh? I bet you’ll find they’re great people. They also have a lay order. I don’t know if your local Carmelites are O’Carm or Discalced Carmelites, but I encourage you to reach out to them and see if they can assist you in being enrolled in the order of the Brown Scapular. You may find you are being called to the Third Order, something everyday laity can do to show their devotion for Our Lady and her Son.

Yes, I wear a Brown Scapular and I have been enrolled in it. I wear it when I’m sleeping, too, and the only time I don’t wear it is when I’m taking a shower.

Does anyone here actually wear it in the shower or go swimming with it? Isn’t it soggy and uncomfortable (more than usual) a while afterwards?
 
I wear mine every place except where it might get wet. I used to wake up and it would be entangled in the St. Jude medal until I prayed that it would stop! And it stopped!

Mine has been broken so many times that I finally had to glue St. Stock to the back of Mary. I guess I could get a new one, but this one still has some years left I think.

I hope everyone remembers though, that while the scapular is an outward sign of our faith and all of the promises that a faith filled life entails that the promises of the scapular are contigent on how we live our life on the inside.

No, it’s not uncomfortable. I wear mine in the shower- just in case I fall down, hit my head and need a priest. 😃 But it does wear them out a bit earlier. but what the hey. They cost next to nothing and do not need to be reblessed.
 
I know that a person does not need to be re-enrolled whenever they get a new scapular, but should the scapular itself be blessed nonetheless?

I’ve only recently learned about the existence of scapulars (what was it, one night two weeks ago? :banghead: ) but I really think Our Lady wishes me to wear it… I’ve researched some of the things we must do in order to receive the graces, and I even went out and bought one this Monday! But the thing is… Are they really that small? Maybe I got a mini version, because I would have thought they’d at least be the size of a fisted hand… but all the ones in the store were TINY! So I’m wondering if I have a real scapular or not… And I haven’t gone to a priest to be enrolled yet because I don’t want to make a fool of myself if it isn’t a real one!

I realize my entire post is a bit off-topic, but… well, we’re talking about scapulars, so… I have a question. If we want to substitute the rosary for the Little Office/Litany, do we have to mention it to the priest? And if so, how? (I’m sorry, I sound like a complete newbie…)

mine is about the size of a thumbnail. i get really bad rashes from them, so i wear a tiny one b/c it’s a smaller rash. and then when it gets REALLY bad, i wear the medal. all it has to be is 2 pieces of brown cloth attached by string, so one hangs in the front and one in the back. the designs don’t really matter unless it’s like satan or something. mine has the carmelite shield on one clothe and the marian symbol on the other clothe. but then i’ve seen so many different kinds. but it’s the brown clothe that really matters. the carmelite sisters and nuns and priests and monks wear a HUGE one that’s just plain brown clothe and looks like an apron. it used to be their aprons, but when our lady appeared to st. simon stock, she said those aprons were her scapular, so they started wearing them all the time.
as for the rosary, i pray the rosary and not a little office. it’s really a matter of devotion. if you’re unable to do the little office or litany, that’s fine. b/c each person is different. but if you’re not going to just b/c you’re lazy…that’s different. ask the priest.

i remember when i was enrolled, there were 3 carmelite sisters there helping the priest, and once we were all enrolled they smiled and said “welcome to the carmelite family!” they pray for everyone in the carmelite family, including any of you who are enrolled.

oh, and for those of you wondering about the medal, it’s supposed to have our lady of mt. carmel on one side and the Sacred Heart on the other.

nope. once you are enrolled, you never have to have it blessed again. it’s YOU that is blessed esentially when the scapular is placed on you. so if you buy a new one, you don’t have to do anything special other than put it on! 🙂

when you’re first enrolled you’re supposed to have the brown clothe, but then may switch to the medal for good reasons. (rashes, work rules, owning 14 different scapulars ;), etc)

also, whenever you kiss your scapular as a sign of your consecration, you receive a partial indulgence. that’s when you do it sinceraly, not just walking around kissing it so you can get the indulgence.

i have a question: i only really know about the brown scapular because of my connection with the carmelites. what are all the other scapulars for and where did they come from? i know the brown one came from our lady of mt. carmel. but what about the other ones?
 
I just started wearing a scapular. I’m not enrolled, yet. I was concerned that I just wouldn’t be able to stand it.

Maybe this is coincidence but maybe it isn’t: when I first started wearing it I would take it off at night. For 3 nights in a row I had kind of disturbing dreams. The fourth night I kept the scapular on, and slept like a baby. Just food for thought :cool:

I figure if I can wear it through the disgusting heat wave of late, then I ought to be good to go 😃
 
A long time ago I used to wear the blue scapular (Immaculate Conception), but now I have been properly enrolled in the brown scapular. The only time I take it off is when I shower. (I also wear it with a blessed benedictine medal and a crucifix.)

Been wearing the Brown Scapular for a little over fifteen years now with a Miraculous Medal since I’m a memeber of the Militia Immaculata, and a St. Benedicts medal. I certainly have a sense of being ‘protected’ by The Mother of God and needless to say, I don’t leave home without it.

The only time I take mine off is in the shower and during a workout for a little while so as not to get it too sweaty. It’s where its at for me !

Ahh yes, I forgot to mention that I am also a member of the Association of Mary, Queen of All Hearts.
 
I just recieved one from a great lady who is a frequent poster here in these forums. I used to wear one as a kid after my 1st Holy communion but stopped. I know I was blessed but not sure if it was for the brown Scapular. Is this the only Scapular you need to be blessed for? If so than I am good to wear it and be blessed. I don’t remember my wife recieving the blessing when she recieved the “Grand Slam” (Baptism,1st Communion, Confirmation, and Marriage) when our marriage was convalidated through the Church. I think I will remove it for showers, swimming, and when woking out so it doesn’t get all salty from perspiration.
 
I’ve only been wearing one for a few days now. A friend gave me one at the National Jamboree and then after Mass on Sunday, Cardinal McCarrick blessed it and Father LaChance from the NCCS invested it.
 
Can anyone direct me to a site where I can get a free Red Scapular? I think the Spirit is really calling me to pay more attention to Our Lord’s Passion.

I’ve been searching for a Red Scapular FOREVER. My gf finally found me one at some shrine shop in New York City. It’s in the mail! I can’t wait 😃
