Wearing flannel pj bottoms to church

Also, at my Newman Center, dress is pretty casual(majority wear jeans, a few wear sweats/pjs), but at least people don’t all walk out during the closing hymn. I’ve noticed that other parishes dress more formally but if you want to partake in the closing hymn, 2/3 of the congregation will be climbing over you on their way out.

While on vacation out in the LA/Disneyland area, I went to Mass at a parish-- can’t remember the name now-- but it was getting towards summer and the priest’s homily was on modest dress.

He talked about the sin of causing another to have immoral thoughts due to your skimpy dress (aimed at girls in low cut, tight, or skimpy shirts/skirts), the lack of reverence for the Sacrament, etc.

It was a reminder lecture that those who are improperly dressed will not be allowed to enter the sactuary. They had signs on the door and everything. Seems like it’s a regular thing there.

THAT was cool, a priest who stands up and tells it how it is!!!
Every church should have and enforce these signs.

I remember hearing gossip because one lady brought her dog(admittedly well-behaved) to mass, Sunday after Sunday. Everyone thought this was nuts!

Once a friend of mine took the time to meet her, she learned that she is blind and the dog is her service animal.
I have no idea where the relevance comes in here…pets are not articles of clothing - unless they have been skinned. 😃

Though most people realize a working dog when they see one.

All of this boils down to a lack of faith/reverence for the Holy Eucharist. This is just yet another symptom of the real issue. We have no one to blame but ourselves for this whole “hippie” attitude towards Jesus.

I don’t see how any one could honestly walk up and receive the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ Himself looking like you’re getting ready to go to bed, the beach, or a singles bar.

In fact, if any of us could truly understand what we were receiving in the Holy Eucharist we would probably go crawling up to the altar on our hand and knees filled with tears of praise and thanksgiving. Let alone, at least look somewhat modest.

Just remember, the more attention we draw to ourselves at Mass, the more attention that is being taken away from Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.

If you have to do or wear certain things because of a physical condition, that’s a whole different story. However, those cases are few and are usually obvious.

LOL
Is anyone paying attention to the mass? 😃

No offense, but too much looking at your neighbor and judging what he/she is wearing, going on here…sheesh! Seductive clothing is downright wrong, because I’ve read that it can tempt others during mass. I thought that was a wonderfully stated comment, by the way…but pj’s, jogging pants…come on. I could care less what someone is wearing, so long as they are dressed with some modesty.

I’m just happy that we are all there…celebrating as a community!

God bless,
WG

It has nothing to do with what other people think, and has everything to do with honoring the Host of the Mass, Jesus Christ.

If you were having a dinner party at your house, one which you made a HUGE sacrifice to have and some people showed up looking like they just crawled out of bed you may say, “I don’t care at least they showed up”, but inside you would feel at least a little let down. On the other hand, you should feel somewhat honored by guests who took the time to come well groomed. Not simply because of how they look, but because they took the time to honor you in a tangible way.

God gave us souls so we can honor Him in a spiritual ways and he gave bodies do we can honor Him in physical ways.

Besides, garments are spoken of many times thought the OT and NT and are looked upon with great importance by God. That should be all we need to know.

I am betting that same individual would not wear pj’s to his prom…so

LOL–You got a point there!!! 👍 That’s very true. That’s why I love this board–I learn how to look at something a bit differently…every day.

God bless,

But would you want your other guests to comment on what someone else was wearing? Or think that maybe the poorly dressed guest didn’t believe in you or didn’t think you were worth it?

I wouldn’t. I would want everyone to keep their mind on the dinner party. I wouldn’t want everyone checking out what everyone else was wearing.

Maybe if someone came in something revealing and there were children there, I would want something said. But other than that, I would want my guests to keep their comments to themselves.

Did you not read the first part of my post?

or this from my earlier post?

I think I made it quite clear this has nothing to do with “making appearances” or what other people think and say. The Blessed Sacrament is of much greater importance than anyone’s feelings, and by Vatican rule I will most definitely speak out if He is being dishonored or desecrated by any one in any way. Sorry. I know it’s not a great way to make lots of friends, but I won’t gain popularity at the expense of God.

When I read this, it immediately reminded me of the gospel story where Jesus tells about the rich man and the banquet. He invited the weakthy, the people of stature and no one showed up so he had his servants go out into the streets and invited the poor, the beggars.(It was more important to him that they showed up.)

I’m not sure I understand your point. Showing up in pj’s has nothing to do with being poor or a beggar.

I supposed it could also remind some of this:

Matthew, chapter 22
12: and he said to him, Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. 13: Then the king said to the attendants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’

The cathedral I go to for daily Mass is in the city and I have seen many poor people there for years. It is obvious to everyone and God that they are poor and no one cares. What I am talking about are people who are fully capable of wearing anything they want, but CHOOSE to look like they would rather be somewhere else, like bed or the beach.

Ah yes up close, but those gossiping were not initially nearby. They only saw a lady 50 feet away, who was not using a cane or any such thing, walking up with her dog to take communion.
