I’ve lost 15lbs in the last few months and I’m feeling good. I still have more to go, but I think it helps once you get past those first few pounds to feel like, yes, I can do this and it’s not just some sort of random fluctuation.
Finding an exercise that I really enjoy has been key for me. I’ve always walked…and walked…and walked, and no matter the pace - unless the incline was super high, I didn’t lose much, if anything. I didn’t want to start running because I don’t want to ruin my joints. Anyway, I started researching and I ordered a rebound-air - it’s amazinnnnnnnnnng. It’s basically a super-sturdy mini-trampoline. It’s so much fun. I do all sorts of jumps on it and there are other health benefits to jumping, too, that I won’t get into right now. Plus I don’t hurt my joints in the process. I can watch tv or listen to music or keep an eye on my little one while I bounce and get exercise. I still use my treadmill and we still walk outside a great deal, but I think the combination of both has been good for me.
The other component was diagnosing some underlying issues going on that were preventing me from having much success. I encourage everyone who has tried and failed to lose weight to at least see your physician and rule out any biochemical obstacles. Mine aren’t fixed, but they’re somewhat managed, and being aware of them is at least part of the battle.
As fall and winter approach, I’ve been psyching myself up to continue the exercise with the same momentum. I know that in the past, I’ve gotten in the habit of being less active because it’s so bitterly cold outside, or warm winter clothes can hide the body a little better then body-baring summer dresses. I don’t want that to happen this year, so I’m trying to get mentally prepared to not give in to any temptation to be sedentary. Plus, fall and winter food tends to be much heavier then summer fare - so I’m trying to be aware and prepared for that, too.
I’ve thought about Weight Watchers, but haven’t decided if it’s right for me. I eat organic, whole foods and I don’t think my diet is too much of the issue. I do have difficulty metabolizing carbs, so I could do better to cut down on whole grains and fruits. My problem with WW is that they really advocate a lot of fake sugar and fake fats, so… not sure it’s for me. I think it would just help with portion size. I’m still nursing, so that’s also something that confuses me - if I don’t eat enough, then my young toddler isn’t getting what she wants/needs.
Anyway, great thread and I will be checking back.
