We're definitely moving back to PA

I was intrigued by the title of your thread. I think the place one spends the formative years of childhood often determines what is “home” and nowhere else is ever quite like home. I grew up in a suburb outside of Philadelphia. It will always be home to me, even though I lived elsewhere (Orlando, FL) for many years. I didn’t like FL at all when we first moved there, and it took two years before I stopped complaining about moving there. I spent quite a bit of time in Pittsburgh on business. There is something special about Pittsburgh, a city of neighborhoods and of people who are proud to be from there. I know a number of people who moved back to Pittsburgh after years of living in other places in the US and overseas. I will say a prayer that your homecoming is all you hope for you and your family.

God bless you.
*Hi Patti;

Yes, there is something special about Pittsburgh. I try to tell people that, but if someone hasn’t ever been, he/she doesn’t understand. :o

The interesting thing to note is that my dh grew up there, not me. haha I grew up in NJ, and the suburbs I grew up in remind me of where we lived in Pittsburgh. My dh doesn’t like the cold, I am not sure how we will work out all the details. When we made the journey to FL, my company footed the entire bill. When it is for personal reasons, they don’t pay, which is understandable. So, to fly back and forth, looking for a place to live…the logistics of it all–not sure how that will all work out. Thanks for chiming in. *

No don’t do it! /morn

😊
*Let’s trade places…I KNOW you want to be in Florida. 😃 It was 5000 degrees on halloween…doesn’t that sound like fun? :hypno: 😛

I have weighed it over and over, for months, actually. My dh, the kids, and me, we put together a pros and cons list…and while Florida has pros, it has cons that weigh heavier than the cons in Pittsburgh, if that makes sense.

LOL Whatevergirl, I was going to tell you to enjoy one last “nice” winter - but since you don’t like it - enjoy it for me. That is the only part I hate about the "burgh. Although I grew up in the mountains in Johnstown - so its like the tropics here - compared to there. but I’m SO not a winter person. I had my winter coat on today brrrrrrrrrrr thank goodness for seat warmers in my new van.

but seriously - we will welcome you back with open arms 🙂 it is a GREAT city, isn’t it! Well its great cause I live 25 min outside of it LOL

I can understand how you feel. I’m a homebody, too. I live in NE Ohio, about an hour from Pittsburgh, and though I complain about the cold and snow every winter, I would not move out of the area. The only other state I would consider living in is Pennsylvania. I’ve visited many other places, and have relatives all over the country, but I could not imagine myself living anywhere else, although I am considering moving to central Ohio to be near my children when I retire, but at least it is similar to here and I will have family near.

So welcome home, and I am sure you will be very happy, even in the snow.

PS: Pittsburgh is a great city, but it’s the only city my husband (whom I swear has his own buit-in GPS system) has ever managed to get lost in, and that includes cities like Washington, DC, Philly, Chicago, New York, Indianapolis, Columbus, Vegas, Detroit. Only Pittsburgh has defeated him. I don’t know how you guys manage to drive there;)

I enjoy reading your posts Whatevergirl, so I’m familiar with your struggle to find your “place” in Florida.

I did the opposite move (moved south to north) and found myself loving my new home. I moved from Houston (very sunny, hot, and humid like Florida) to Washington DC six years ago. Houston was my childhood home, and I moved to DC for a career. I ended up loving the mid-Atlantic despite the fact that I have absolutely no family in the region (my closest family is about 1500 miles away) and few friends. Despite this, I love the north. The Catholic faith is far more vibrant and established here than in the south. It’s much easier to feel at home in my parish, in young adult groups, and in diocesan events. The area has so much to do (Houston is big and diverse, but isolated in the vastness of Texas). It also helps that my lovable GF is here too. 🙂

But I understand what you mean about having a support system. Neither myself or my GF have family here or many friends, and it can be difficult at times. I think if we get married and have kids, I would be much more inclined to move near family (hers or mine).

PA is nice. Homey and the people are nice. Glad you are going back. 🙂

LOL This was great! Being a Pittsburgher (well, grew up about 40 min from it, and live now about 10 min from it), I can assure you that he is not alone. I know people who have lived here all their lives and they will drive ANYWHERE but downtown.

I was quietly rooting for you guys to move back to Pittsburgh. I’m glad you’re going through with it. 🙂 Best of luck.😃

Glad to hear you are returning to the home of your heart.

I will be scanning the faces in the crowd at the Pens game next year looking for you!
Try not to worry too much about the “smaller” details (like the actual move!) the biggest decision is now behind you!

Best of luck, and remember that through CAF you still have your friends with you no matter where you are!

:grouphug:

I know how difficult it is to move. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Florida will miss you!

As a current and native Pittsburgher, im pleased you are finding your way back

*You know what’s a little weird, though? My kids, who have lamented about being here since we’ve moved (comparing EVERYTHING to Pittsburgh), now that we are seriously leaning towards moving back–well, pretty much made up our minds to do so, my dd was naming all the good things about Florida, our community, her music school, etc last night. My son has been sick 😦 so, he hasn’t been contributing much to the conversations. So, I said…all this time, I have heard you and your brother complain about Florida…and she said, well, it’s not that I wouldn’t want to go back, but there are good things here, too.

No, that is true. We have made a life here, I can’t say we are not happy here. If we approach stumbling block after stumbling block in our journey back, maybe that is God’s way of telling us ‘‘no.’’

I just thought that was rich, to hear my dd defend Florida, when we have made the decision to move back.

Help

SOS

Someone…

:hypno:*

Isn’t that always the way? Once the reality of it sets in we start to get a little afraid. All I wanted was this job so I could move away from NY. When they finally called me know what my answer was? “Can I get back to you on this?”. The reality of moving my family once we were already established (17 years) in NY was scary (I don’t have to tell you!).

SOS?

Here’s your life line: :signofcross::gopray2:

*Yeah, perhaps that is it! I absolutely think that the opportunity here, although things didn’t EAXCTLY pan out as I had hoped at work but still have been better than in Pgh, is something we needed to go through as a family. Looking back to our life in Pgh, it seems like we were stuck. I dunno. *

I can’t help but feel at times, that we should not have moved. That the money my company offered was not enough, for what it is we sacrificed. Or what it is we gained. Did I really need to see that how different the Catholic community is down here? That has been painful to watch…how marginalized Catholics are down here, and how the parishes don’t seem ‘content’ to worship as traditional Catholics. Sad, to say the least. Why did I need to see this? 🤷 Did I really need to be in a region where the recession has hit it so hard and it’s been virtually impossible to gain momentum in sales? Did I really need to discover a whole new world of traffic jams, and constant accidents on my daily commute home? Did we need to move here for my husband to get a job where we hardly ever see him? Did I need to leave behind people who truly cared about me at the Pgh office where I work–to come to a place where I have felt like a perpetual ''outsider?" That has also been a huge component of my desire to leave Florida.

These are questions I ask myself, at the risk of sounding ungrateful for whatever this experience was supposed to teach us. 😦

As a Pennsylvanian, allow me to speak on behalf of my state… We’ll be happy to have you back home!

whatevergirl, I’m fairly new here, but I’ve read your posts on this, and I will definitely keep you in my prayers! I hope your move back goes smoothly and you are happier than ever back home! 🙂

I moved 6 months ago to a different state and while it has been culture shock in more ways than one, I am finding I am glad to be here FINALLY. I do think this is the place God meant me to be as I have learned some very valuable lessons in trusting God. 👍

Congrats WG! I know you guys have been struggling with this for a while, Praise the Lord in His guidance to lead you guys to a decision!
