The Magnificat (Song of the Virgin Mary), especially the following lines:
Luke 1:46-55

And Mary said:
‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
He has scattered the proud in the delusions of their hearts
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones
And has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things
And has sent the rich away empty
."
Christ announced the arrival of a kingdom turned upside-down, where the last would be first and the first would be last (Matt 19:30; 20:16). He likewise spoke about tax-collectors and prostitutes entering this kingdom before the religious elites (Matt 21:31).

I find that kind of subversive oratory stirring. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who faced the Nazis and was executed by them, said the following about the Magnificat:
The song of Mary is the oldest Advent hymn. It is at once the most passionate, the wildest, one might even say the most revolutionary Advent hymn ever sung. This is not the gentle, tender, dreamy Mary whom we sometimes see in paintings. This song has none of the sweet, nostalgic, or even playful tones of some of our Christmas carols. It is instead a hard, strong, inexorable song” (A sermon for Advent 1933)
It is a message of hope and divine favour to those suffering under oppressive regimes.

I like Matthew 12:25 Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
This afterlife thing is soo getting fixed.

Ephesians 5
Submitting (allowing) myself to be loved and how I should love my own wife

Mine isn’t a verse so much as a story. The story of the prodigal son speaks to me deeply, as well as the story of Peter.

I feel like I experienced both those things. The prodigal son because I left Christianity and turned my back on it. The story of Peter because I was at the time surrounded by non-Christians and I pretended not to believe in God so that I would fit in.

Coming back to the faith and then coming home to Rome I felt like both the prodigal son AND Peter and I feel like I experienced a lot of what both those men experienced.

For me it was rather profound to read those stories after coming home.

I like John 3:17 as well. It explains 3:16 perfectly and this explanation forms a basis of our faith.

It is a pointer to the way to happiness .

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

I want to change my answer. Not that my last answer was bad, but I am in to dichotomies and the opposite of Romans 6:23 seems interesting to me. 😃

Because today is the Feast of St James the Apostle to whom these words were addressed , and he drank of that cup .

“You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” (Mark 10:38)

My favourite chapter has always been John 1:1-18

My favourite verse is more difficult to choose as there are so many, but at the moment it’s Isaiah 25:8

Thanks , @sudy . That’s so full of hope and comfort . 😄

“He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The LORD has spoken.”

Because it’s the greatest short story ever told .

Because I find this one odd . 😆

“If two Israelite men get into a fight and the wife of one tries to rescue her husband by grabbing the testicles of the other man, you are to cut off her hand. You must show her no pity .” (Deut 25:11-12)

Psalm 34 - 18
The Lord is close to the broken hearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

One of my favorite stories in the Gospels is this one.

"Luke 10: [38] Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain town: and a certain woman named Martha, received him into her house. [39] And she had a sister called Mary, who sitting also at the Lord’s feet, heard his word. [40] But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, hast thou no care that my sister hath left me alone to serve? speak to her therefore, that she help me.

[41] And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things: [42] But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her."

Mary Magdalen was the very first Christian contemplative. That was the “best part” that Jesus was referring to, which Mary had chosen for herself.

In times when I should be experiencing real fear and worry, I have found a profound sense of peace from God, which transcends all my understanding.

Philippians 4
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

That’s one of my favorites too. The next two verses are favorites too.

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.

OK, I just figured I needed to add that Mary Magdalen was the first AFTER the Blessed Mother, just in case there was ever any doubt about that. 😉
