Let’s begin by saying I don’t know what the hell is wrong with me…

I’m addicted to masturbation… I just did it again a few minutes ago after confessing it very recently

I’ve been trying to say my prayers. I pray the 3 Hail Marys in the morning and at night which are supposed to guarantee protection from Our Mother from mortal sin, but I guess not for me. I’ve also been trying to read the daily scripture readings. I pray before my meals, when I feel anxiety, pray for others, pray for myself, but nothing is working…

I have a feeling I need something to keep me occupied. I just dropped out of college, never had much friends to turn to…
I got no motivation for anything, don’t really know what I should do. All I got in my life is basically a seasonal job at Target.

Random people on the internet is all I can turn to. I’ve talked to so many priests, and a bit to my parents, but nothing’s sticking.

Support is what I need and motivation to do something with my life.

Hello Pharisee,

My name is Matt. I don’t post on these forums too much, but I do read them often. I’ll try to help you.

Masturbation is an addictive sin. I fight it also. I beg you to persevere in prayer. Know that God loves you and will forgive you when you fall. Fight it! Fight it! Fight it! Pray when you get the urges. If you are in bed and are tempted, get out of bed. Do something. Put on the TV, read, definately pray. Do something to avoid the temptation.

You say you never had much friends. Perhaps you could get involved in your parish. I always have a good time volunteering in the Kitchen during Bingo. Get involved and perhaps you’ll make friends.

Finally, find a good, holy priest and set up frequent confessions and spiritual direction. God gave us the Sacraments and priests for a reason, you know! 😃

I’ll be praying for you, my friend. Say a prayer or two for me. I sure need them.

God Bless and Best Wishes,
Matt

Do not feel alone; in my years I struggled with the same temptation. Read Poor_sinner’s thread too. Hear’s my advice:

First: Go to confession, and seek the advice from the priest. If he is a good priest, ask to be accountable to him, so that every time you need to talk to him about your temptation. Keep trying and do not give up. I know it feels impossible at times to resist, but hang on as long as you can.

Second: Eliminate sin-realizing activities. What I mean by this is, if there are certain situations, such as being alone for a long time or things like that that might make your mind wander where it ought not go, be ready to leave that situation, or find something to do like read something that interests you that is religious in content, or pray a chaplet.

Third: Use the sacramentals. Place a holy water font at the front door. Make a home altar with a picture of Christ, Mary, or your patron saint. If you are struggling with masturbation, St.Joseph, being the Patron of Manliness and Fatherhood would be a good choice too. Pray a rosary a day, meditating on each event. Place a crucifix above every bed in your house.

Fourth: Get a green scapular and get it blessed by a priest. It can be especially effective in fighting faithlessness, temptation, and increases your desire to serve God (As long as it is used with the proper disposition.

I hope these suggestions help you. I struggled with the same problems earlier in my life, as many have. Don’t loose hope! Above all, worship Christ in the Eucharist.

God bless you, I’ll be praying for you.

Do not be discouraged. In our culture that glorifies the abuse of sex, it is a very strong temptation. Even many Christian denominations no longer consider it a sin- even many Catholics don’t think it’s a sin at all- let alone a mortal one.
I’ve been trying to say my prayers. I pray the 3 Hail Marys in the morning and at night which are supposed to guarantee protection from Our Mother from mortal sin, but I guess not for me.
Devotions are not charms. They are there to help you along your spiritual journey- and when you do them faithfully, they can be very helpful. You can’t just do them though- you have to do them with the proper focus. I don’t know if you do or not- only you and God know that- I do know it is very tempting to recite daily prayers like this without thinking about what they mean and why you have chosen to keep that devotion.

Perhaps your sins are not mortal. Masturbation is grave matter, but that doesn’t mean it *necessarily *is a mortal sin every time you do it. If it’s habitual (that you are trying to rid yourself of) or unintentional (like if you do it in your sleep, or when you have just waken up), it probably isn’t a mortal sin for you. You should confess it anyway, but don’t get discouraged- people can and have won the battle of sexual purity.
I’ve also been trying to read the daily scripture readings. I pray before my meals, when I feel anxiety, pray for others, pray for myself, but nothing is working…
Ah…you don’t know how much it is working. I am sure there are many temptations that are warded off by your prayers. Sometimes God allows us to fall to test our faith. Make an act of contrition. Tell God you’re sorry, and you’ll try to do better- and also ask for help from Mary and the Saints. Go to confession every week, and try to go to Mass at least twice a week. Also, try to go to adoration as often as you can.
I have a feeling I need something to keep me occupied. I just dropped out of college, never had much friends to turn to…
I got no motivation for anything, don’t really know what I should do. All I got in my life is basically a seasonal job at Target.
Depression can be a cause for these kinds of struggles. I’m not talking clinical depression- just the normal depression that results from a stressful situation like you describe here. Go to Mass as often as you can. Ask God to guide you to people in person who can help you. To live chastely, it is very important to surround yourself with good, holy people. Sometimes such people can be hard to find, but there are out there- pray, and God will lead you to them.
Random people on the internet is all I can turn to. I’ve talked to so many priests, and a bit to my parents, but nothing’s sticking.
People on the internet can help for awhile. Priests are also a big help. I can’t imagine talking to my parents about that sort of thing, but that’s just how my family works. The biggest help are friends. You don’t have to talk to them about your struggles, but being in the company of others helps you avoid near occasions of sin.

Welcome to the human condition. I will also say that you are not alone. I too struggle with it on and off.

Thanks to Theology of the Body, I am able to fight these temptations simply because I know what is true. Now, that doesn’t mean I fight them and win 100%. The devil seems to know how to get me sometimes and I really hate the fact that he wins sometimes. Unfortunately, attractive women can be my achilles heel and the devil knows that.

Praying Hail Mary’s didn’t help me either. Even the St. Michael prayer didn’t help me… I wondered if I was doing something wrong. That was before.

Now, I can say that I’m fighting with a better weapon. I am able to not do it for a long time. It takes the devil a massive attack to be successful or he sets me up to fall. My weapon? Eastern Catholicism. The Eastern church’s mysticism gave me a fighting chance most particularly the Jesus prayer. I must say that it has been an effective temptation killer… at least for me.

When the moment of temptation comes, say the following:
"Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" over and over and over and over. Say the prayer as if you were breathing it. It helps. At first, saying 3 of them killed off temptations. The devil is doing his job and now it takes me over 10 of them to get rid of temptation. I actually had to buy a chotki to pray the Jesus prayer but you don’t have to, that’s just me.

You’re not alone. Many men struggle with this. And don’t feel bad if you fall. God may get disappointed but His love is greater than anything else, even greater than any sin. Just get up, pick up the pieces, dust off yourself and move on. There is always confession.

I hope you read this and find encouragement. This is real spiritual war. I know I’m not completely out of the woods yet but slowly getting there with the grace of God.

I’ll keep saying my Jesus prayer and say a rosary for us who are struggling. 👍

I have the same struggles like you Pharisee. I have been looking for a thread like this and I finally found it here in CA.

Knowing people who are also fighting this addiction is very comforting to me. Its hard to fight it when I feel like I am alone.

I recommend along with prayer and frequent confession, to turn off the TV or only watch Catholic TV. To stop using the internet except for sites like this, and cut your use of all other media that has temptations in it like scantily clad women in ads etc. At least until you get a few months under your belt and you can handle temptations better.

This is how I beat it.

Keep going to confession. Go again immediately after your offense. Be PERSISTENT in your prayer. This obsession WILL be removed in God’s time.

Sometimes, it is easy to think that after receiving Reconcilliation, we will never sin again, and then when we do, we are filled with disappointment. God does not ask perfection from us, so please do not beat yourself up. Yes, it is necessary to repent and seek forgiveness when we sin, but we cannot free ourselves from sin. But with the grace of God, we can improve, and do better.

When trying to break patterns of habitual sin, it has helped me to pray to God that today I will do better than I did yesterday. That helps me not feel so overwhelmed and it helps me be realistic. Sometimes, it takes time to overcome certain sins and it does not always happen over night.

Sometimes, we also need to fix another area in our life, to eliminate the variable that leads us/tempts us to sin. For example, sometimes extreme stress and anxiety creates an environment where people are more likely to give into impure actions. Loneliness can be a factor too. Until those variables are resolved, it is sometimes difficult to overcome particular sin. I think sometimes the reason people, particularly women, commit sexual sins is for emotional reasons, rather than physical pleasure. Until those reasons are addressed, it can be extremely difficult to overcome sin.

Remember, God forgives us each time we ask. And God knows you are trying to not commit this sin. While sin is still sin, it is different when you are trying to battle it, rather than completely ignoring God`s will.

It is wonderful to start and end your day with three Hail Mary`s. I also really recommend trying to pray the whole rosary. You might try praying the rosary until you drift off to sleep.

God is waiting to forgive you so please do not hesitant in seeking forgiveness.

I will keep you in my prayers. We all struggle with sin and you are not alone.

Sincerely,

Maria1212

Dear OP,

I went to the Saturday Vigil today and recommend you read todays readings because they will encourage you. Sometimes I think the devil tries to fill us with discouragement and despair. But Gods love and mercy is infinite and God wants to comfort and encourage us. When we fall down, we have to pick ourselves up again and try our best to keep going.

Even if you slip up, ask for forgiveness and start again. With God`s grace you can overcome this.

Sincerely,

Maria1212

Can you recommend a good “guide” to the Rosary?

Not on how to pray it, as I already know how; more like a guide on how to pray the Rosary better.

I really recommend The Rosary: Chain of Hope by Father Benedict Groeschel. You can read more about it at Amazon.com.

Here is my situation, if you could kindly offer me some more advice (it’s pretty long if could spare some time in your busy lives):

I confessed over the weekend, but just a few hours ago I am looking at pornography and masturbating.

I have no one to talk to either. You see I think I suffer from sever Social Anxiety Disorder, but I haven’t got diagnosed or treated. Have you ever felt what it’s like to want to make friends but you can’t or ask a girl out but you can’t? Do you know what it’s like sitting by yourself all the time, being the last kid picked for games?

I have had few friends in my life, and at this moment and for the past three years I have had none except one which I just started talking to over the phone because we were friends back where he lives, but I now moved away from him.

THIS is only half of my story. To top it off, I’m having serious doubts about this Catholic faith. I read about the Saints and their way of life seems so untouchable. I can’t handle it. I mean I’ve tried like I mentioned earlier, learning about the faith, even copying the life of a Saint to the point of fasting two days a week last year. I just don’t understand the faith. I want a faith to feel passionate about, something concrete to believe where I can really say I believe. I don’t feel any of that when I pray or try to live holy. I just feel sad and it becomes very difficult for me.

FURTHERMORE, I have this whole issue of my parents not understanding me. They expect me to return to college this January. What I FEEL is that I need to do some soul searching. I want to serve the needy overseas with a volunteer mission group. I have told my parents about this in great detail. A priest even told me people don’t know that some people just aren’t cut out for college right away, it’s a fact. My father’s view, though is, after serving overseas, what am I going to do with my life. He says those who don’t start college right away are very likely never to go. He keeps painting this bleak future for me.

Finally, either that’s a whole lot of problems or I’m exaggerating a lot. I probably even missed a bunch of details. Right now, I feels as if I’m a useless piece of flesh.

Every male, Catholic or non-Catholic, suffers from this. Even the saints were tempted in this very way. If it is a habitual sin, and it has become almost involuntary, then it is most likely that you do not bear mortal sin, only venial. However, to give up even the struggle would make it a mortal sin. You must continue the fight. I am tempted the same way; most of us are.

Do not think that you are any less valuable because of these human things. You have a soul; you are invaluable, priceless.

You may have SAD. Have you talked to this one friend or to your parents about it? Have you told your father about your addiction?

I read a story once, of a French saint (I can’t remember her name at the time). In her early life, she engauged in all kinds of disgusting sexual behaviour, and lived with a man she was not married too. When he died, she began to see that she had to give up her sinful life for the sake of God.

But you are struggling against it; that proves that you intend to stop doing it; because of this, and other factors, probably social and hormonal, I believe that, in this circumstance, you are not necessarily committing a mortal sin. However, you do need to comtinue to fight it. Pray the rosary, MEDITATING ON THE MYSTERIES. And above all, do not leave the Catholic faith; if so, you will be committing a real mortal sin, and, outside of the Catholic Church, you will have even less help with this problem than within the Church.

Tell your parents how you feel; listen to the priest. Ask the priest for help with the masturbation problem. If he is a good priest, you can rely on him, and be accountable to him. call him when you are struggling all the more.
Finally, either that’s a whole lot of problems or I’m exaggerating a lot. I probably even missed a bunch of details. Right now, I feels as if I’m a useless piece of flesh.
Never feel that way! You are an Image of God. You are the finest creature in all creation. You are human. Your soul is invaluable, priceless; beyond worth. In my earlier years, I sounded just like you (minus the college thing) and I even contemplated suicide. But Christ and Mary and the Church were always there for me, and they’re what encouraged me. As low as you are now, think of the heights of bliss that Christ can bring to you! If you perservere to the end of your life, after purgation, after the ressurection of all Christians, your body will be glorified, you will expirience divinization. You will be a divine human.

So don’t give up! Go to Eucharistic Adoration! Come to Christ in the Holy Eucharist, cry before Him, tell Him everything. He can help you. You’re in all our prayers.

To the original poster: we are all tempted in many ways, and it seems this area is your (and many peoples’) weak point. Keep praying the Rosary and praying the chaplet of Divine Mercy and it will help – even if you don’t feel like it is. You obviously want to do what God has said is right, and the closer you draw to God, the more Satan doesn’t like it. But the great news is that God will give you more strength to resist that evil if you honestly ask Him. Picture Jesus sitting next to you when you are tempted – if He was actually sitting there, what would you do? You’d praise Him, not giving a second thought to your temptation. I know it’s not always that easy (I’ve been there) but with His help, you can do it.

If you can get involved with a mission group or a local group, that sounds like it would be wonderful. We need companionship, friends. I know that temptation is especially hard to resist when you feel lonely, so try to get involved with a soup kitchen, pro-life group, or other group. When you focus outward instead of inward, you’ll be amazed at the strength you find.

Remember this quote (maybe it will help):
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Jesus is within you (especially when you have received Holy Communion) – never forget that. Did you know that in St. Faustina’s Diary (Divine Mercy message) she recorded that Jesus told her He remains in each person after Holy Communion until they receive Him again in Holy Communion (if they are in a state of grace)? ❤️ Knowing this has helped me greatly.

Please take a look at the following video – sometimes visualizing what we know in our hearts is very helpful:

God bless you. :hug1:

Unless you understand the reason for not committing this sin, you will continue to fail.

When the reason is weaker than the desire, eventually the desire will win out.

The reason to avoid sin can only become stronger than your desire, through the grace Jesus gives us, in prayer, receiving the sacraments and through penance.

Also, you must stay out of porn sites! Keep in mind who the sort of people run this industry are. They are people who would steal everything you have, including your life, if you give them the chance. Nothing is beyond them. Their exploitation of human beings, should tell you, that they have no love for anyone. By visiting porn sites, you help feed their industry even if you don’t buy anything. The number of hits they get on their sites, helps feed attract their sponsors. Stay away from them!

A priest told a group of men at a retreat which I attended, that of all the sins he has heard in confession, during his 35 years as a priest, masturbation is the one he heard the most and the one he believes is the most difficult to overcome.

So, you’re not alone. Continually look to Jesus and his Mother, and don’t ever give up the fight.

Jim

I masturbated and looked at pornography again, said the Lord’s name in vain, and disrespected my parents just when I confessed two days ago. The priest I confessed to gave me his number to call because he was concerned, but I feel so embarrased speaking to him. I think he is or will get impatient with me. I’m not even sure if I can confess sincerely. At this moment, for instance, I can say I LIKED masturbating.

This probably isn’t a good excuse, but everytime after I confess and feel renewed, I’m just reminded how miserable I am. Here’s my concerns: Now that I dropped out of college, I have a 0.231 GPA when I start college again next semester, and (I*'m probably repeating things from my previous posts*) I have nothing to occupy my time with except a few hours of work at Target a week. I also start dwelling on the fact that I have zero friends and never had a girlfriend. Though I’m only eighteen, is it wrong to want to fall in love? The gist of it is I’m lonely and if I could just die if not for the consequence of going to hell, and facing the unbelievable torment.

Lastly, again this prayer thing/Catholic faith doesn’t seem to be doing it for me. I mean I really try to focus. I pray VERY sincerely morning and night, and read scripture. I’m thinking right now I don’t want anything to do with God. I don’t understand Catholicism, and I can’t say I truly believe.

I’ve tried my parents, and I just can’t depend on them. They don’t understand.

My confessor also told me the quote “To whom much is given, much is expected in return” applies to me. But I I’m telling you and God I can’t do this. I don’t feel capable of giving back anything near to what God has given me.

Now that I’ve written like this some will respond because they will get really concerned about my state of being, but I won’t be surprised if some think I’m hopeless and don’t bother responding because it is my choice to go to hell. If you’re reading this, I wouldn’t be surprised if your advice is either live the precepts of the Catholic faith and just live your life like everybody else or go to hell. 👍

Sounds like you are anxious. Do you walk or do some sort of excersize. It is a great way to relieve tension. Walk several blocks early morning. You’ll I love it. You will find it will give you some time to talk to God, and God talks back with the beauty of world. Do not fret so much, when you are young it is normal to reach hormonial peaks, add other stresses it can exceberate the condition. You sound normal. Try redirecting you stored up energy.
