I was asked to join a bible study at the Catholic church. The person said they were Charismatic Catholics. What does that mean exactly??

I suggest you google this, PM some people (ie Br JR), or look at old threads. It is not permitted to talk about this on these forums because it is a very contentious subject.

Are you sure it is not allowed. I looked all through the rules and could not find it.

I assume YTC is referring to the moratorium on discussing Charismatic Catholicism in the Liturgy and Sacraments sub-forum.

EWTN does a great job of explaining things. The Charismatic Renewal is 100% approved by the Church.

You’ll find that a few traditional Catholics have an irrational fear of the charismatic renewal, for reasons I am not quite sure of.
Most likely they have encountered abuses of it or extremists. That is usually the reason that people take a group into dislike.

I find it odd that a poster is inquiring about Charismatic Catholics in a sub-forum for traditional Catholicism. There does not seem to be much connection. I wonder if it has anything to do with traditional Catholics having a history of negative reactions to the topic. One might consider the possibility that the purpose is to provoke these reactions.

Ah, I only read the rules in this sub-forum. Do the L and S rules apply here.

In our Catholic Church in California, it ment people who were open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We enjoyed praising God in song, praise, and occasionally in tongues. You may experience a prophecy if some one feels led by God to share one. We also prayed with people who requested healing. My experiences were positive. These people were joyful, and respectful.

To put it simply, it is Catholics imitating some of the religious practices of Evangelical Protestants (commonly known as Holy Rollers) in addition to their attending Mass and receiving the Sacrements in a conventional manner.

Sorry to offend anyone. Having not been raised in any church, I didn’t know it wasn’t part of traditional Catholicism. Since it was offered at my RICA class- I didn’t know it would ’ provoke reactions’ to ask about it.

As another poster suggested, I will look elsewhere.

I was wrong to suggest that you had bad motives for asking. Please forgive me.

Maybe I’m a tad polemical, but isn’t that implying that other Catholics aren’t open to them?

I don’t think you offended anyone. Generally traditionalist are more reserved for lack of a better term where as charismatics are maybe more exuberant. The personality types tend to clash and rub people the wrong way. Charismatics don’t offend me, but I find their spiritual expression offputting. That being said I won’t willingly sit with a group of them for an hour every week. It not an irrational fear, but rather that I find all extroverts wearing and physically draining. I have as yet to meet a charismatic that is not overtly extroverted.

Holy Rollers is a disparaging term and not something you would say unless you wanted to be insulting. The correct term would be Pentecostals.

The Charismatic Catholic movement does come from the Evangelical Charismatic movement and that of the Pentecostal churches as well. While many of us find it disconcerting, it is accepted by the Pope at this time, though I understand that they have been gradually reigning in some of the practices as veering too far from accepted liturgical standards in recent years.

So it is fine for the OP to attend a Charismatic service or bible study for Catholics but there is no harm in withdrawing if it doesn’t feel comfortable.

I am really sorry to have offended anyone, but I grew up in the deep south (way before V II) and the term “Holy Roller” was in common use, and at that time was common slang for Protestent Pentacostals - by Protestants themselves. The term was in such common use that no one thought of it as disparaging. I guess it is like the “N” word. Which became an insulting word if used by Whites, after the Civil Rights movement but was still OK for Afro-Americans to use.

Check those links. There is a lot to learn about the charisms that each of us has, and that is why there is a movement to investigate and promote their use.

I think that is where there is a disconnect. I did a session in charisms with the Catherine of Sienna Institute. It helped people identify the gift of the holy spirit. The disconnect is that the majority of Charismatic Catholic (and Pentecostals) is they heavily focus on prophecy and speaking in tongues. In reality those two gifts are exceedingly rare, but in some charismatic groups it seemed everyone spoke in tongues and many prophesied.
