What are the books that protestants took out of the Bible?

I already quote the Haydock Commentary to that effect. The Catholic Commentary on the Scriptures says:
This may sound like splitting-hairs, but I wouldn’t say “the Catholic commentary on the Scriptures”. Better to call it “a Catholic commentary on the Scriptures”.

They are not quite the same. 1 Samuel 31:4 is the actual account of Saul’s death. 2 Samuel 1 is someone telling David what happened. That someone need not be telling the truth. Perhaps he felt David would reward him for killing his enemy.
Good point.
2 Samuel 21:12 can be explained as Saul losing his life at the battle of Gilboa with the Philistines , which is where he did die. 2 Maccabees involves two entirely different locations.
So when it says “They had taken them secretly from the public square at Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them after they struck Saul down on Gilboa”, do you interpret that to mean that the Philistines struck him down but without actually killing him?

(It’s getting a bit late for me tonight, but I’ll be back. :))

Hi,

I have just purchased a KJV 1611 Edition which contains the Apocrypha. My question is why the later editions of the KJV left out the Apocrypha? Do you think it was for political reasons, theological reasons or just to save money on printing costs? Thank you.

Jean
Frankly it was done by the British Foreign Bible Society, no church council no bishops or theologian to recommend the removal, just a John Doe saving money on printing.

Ref:
catholicapologetics.net

This is the first time I’ve heard that it was done to save money. My understanding was that Puritans requested copies of the KJV that didn’t have the Apocrypha, and this became a trend.

That’s me been uncharitable, since the Puritans where a minor church to my knowledge, with no real leverage for what they wanted.

I will attribute your response to the simple fact that you cannot let yourself believe the Catholic Church could actually be right.
I would disagree with that completely. He is presenting some very good points here without much in the way of rebuttal. I’d say that he is the straw stirring the drink for the time being.

Do you need me to list every Scripture that says that we are to obey authority, and that the final authority is the Church, and that not everybody is given the ability to inallibly interpret Scripture? The Catholic Church is most definitely the Church of the New Testament.
Prove it.

Gabriel of 12 - 'one church’
Code:
"One faith, one Lord and one baptism" - fine. But help me find the specific reference to 'one church'? I guess I missed it. Sorry.
Roy, Yes you missed it, and here it is below, and your appology is accepted.

(Matt 16: 18) And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Roy, the bible verse above (Matt 16: 18) Did Jesus Christ, say "Upon this rock I will build my Church or churchesssss? Jesus Said Church, therefore it mean only ONE CHURCH.

Roy, does your Protestant church have a Royal Priesthood? If you answered NO, then you have answered correctly. Roy, you should be worried that it don’t have a Royal Priesthood because read the Bible Verse Below:

(1 Peter 2: 5) Be you also as living stones built up, a spiritual house, a** holy priesthood**, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

A spiritual house, not housesss. One House/Church where the Holy Priesthood offers up spiritual scarifices.

Roy, the above bible verse should prove to you that since your Protestant Church does not have a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD like the Catholic Church has a Royal Priesthood, then you are attending a Church NOT FOUNDED ON ROCK.

Sure Iam glad you asked? You see when a Catholic speaks about the “Church” we are speaking about the biblical teaching of the One body of Jesus Christ, not a building church or a select group of believers who attach themselves to a self named group of believers. The Catholic teaching of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is the One body of Jesus Christ living on earth “universal” and in heaven in the communion of Saints, you see not even death can seperate us from the Love of God. Here are some scriptures for your review of this One body who is the Church.

Col.1:17
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
18
He is the head of the body, the church.

Ephesians 1:22
And he put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
23
which is his body,

1Cor.12:20
But as it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
. But God has so constructed the body as to give greater honor to a part that is without it,
25
so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same concern for one another.
26
If (one) part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy.
27
5 **Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. **

Romans 12;4
For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function,

Ephesians 5:23
For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.
24
As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.
25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her
26
to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,
27
that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
28
So (also) husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
29
For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church,
30
because we are members of his body.
31
“For this reason a man shall leave (his) father and (his) mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
32
**This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. **

1Cor.10:17
Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

Col.3:15
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.

This apostolic Traditional Catholic teaching shows no difference between One Body in Jesus Christ and One Church both are the same. The Sola Scripture does state One Church as you implied, but the biblical and Apostolic Tradition does not conflict with Scripture but support one another in the ONE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF JESUS CHRIST.

Did you know the “Church” is the Pillar and foundation of Truth? here is the scripture that reveals this Apostolic Catholic Tradition;

1Tim.3:15
But if I should be delayed, you should know how to behave in **the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth. **

This is the One Church I referenced is the One body of Jesus Christ is the Catholic Church.

Peace be with you

This whole idea that there is only one true church leaves me cold. I know that many Catholics believe that, and I respect that opinion as much as I don't share it. Many Protestants also believe in only 'one way' - their particular way.

My own view is that Christianity should be a 'big tent' faith, which welcomes Christians with different interpretations of scripture. God knows, decent and intelligent people have interpreted various passages very differently. What about the admonition of Christ that "ye resist not evil.?" What about pacifists who say that Jesus meant it when he said that we should love our enemies? that it isn't enough not to kill, but even to be at odds with someone else is reason enough to leave the church and reconcile before bringing our offering into the sanctuary? Certainly, many early Christians were pacifists.

Yet, contrast that with the Old Testament atrocities, where God allegedly (I don't believe it) ordered Joshua to kill all the inhabitants of Jericho and King Saul to slaughter every man, woman and child of the Amalekites. And we could go on and on. And contrast it with many contemporary Americans Christians, Catholics and Protestants, who are ready to bless such mistakes as 'shock and awe' over Bagdad and the killing of innocent people in Iraq. Yes Afghanistan may be a somewhat different story, but how foolish we were to divert our attentionf rom Osama bin Laden and his gang of terrorists.

Any church or person, Catholic or Protestant, which/who pretends to have a monopoly on the truth is - in my view, again - wrong. I can't believe in a God who punishes us because we think for ourselves and have our own opinions. Quite the opposite. I have enjoyed Bible study groups where different persons provide different meanings for the one verse. It stretches the mind, and how can God condemn that?

Besides, Jesus spoke of his followers not of this flock. Actually, I respect the sincere followers of Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, etc., as long as they live moral lives and are ready to live in peace and harmony with the rest of us. I spent time in India, China, Korea, and Japan and it is egotistic and obnoxious for western Christians to think that we are spiritually so superior to people of other faiths there. To offer them Christ to them is one thing. To demonize their religions is quite another. There are unfortunate features in most faiths. The record of Christianity over the centuries has been far from righteous, whether we're talking about the Crusades, the Inquisition, the killing of heretics, the bloody religious wars, etc.

Has religion done more damage than good? Sometimes I wonder. Religions should help built bridges between peoples and not build walls.

I respect your view because at one point in my life I had the same opinion. Upon reading scripture I had a change of mind.

Jn 10:16 - there will be one fold and one shepherd.
Eph 4:3-6 - one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father
Rom 16:17 - I urge that there be no divisions among you
1Cor 1:10 - I urge that there be no divisions among you
Phil 2:2 - be of same mind, united in heart thinking one thing
Rom 15:5 - God grant you to think in harmony with one another
Jn 17:17-23 - I pray that they may be one, as we are one
Jn 17:23 - that they may be brought to perfection as one
1Cor 12:13 - in one spirit we are baptized into one body
Rom 12:5 - we, though many, are one body in Christ
Eph 4:4 - one body, one Spirit, called to be one hope
Col 3:15 - the peace into which you were called in one body
Mt 16:18-19 - upon this rock I will build my Church (singular)
Mt 18:17 - tell it to THE Church; if he refuses to listen even to THE Church… (must be visible)

Fortunately, you are not the founder of the Christian faith, so the “my own view” you are forwarding of what the Christian faith “should be” holds no water. It may be that you, like many before you, will found another “church” based on your “big tent” theory and call it Christian. But this was not what Christ intended. Sure, decent and intelligent people interpret scripture differently. This is why Jesus founded His Church upon the Apostles and Prophets, and gave them the authority to teach the Scriptures.
Yet, contrast that with the Old Testament atrocities, where God allegedly (I don’t believe it) ordered Joshua to kill all the inhabitants of Jericho and King Saul to slaughter every man, woman and child of the Amalekites. And we could go on and on.
There is not much need to “go on”, is there, if you refuse to believe what God has revealed already? If you try to move foward from a basis of error, you will only encounter more error.
I can’t believe in a God who punishes us because we think for ourselves and have our own opinions.
Human freedom has boundaries. This is the whole point of the story of Adam and Eve. We are not free to define right and wrong for ourselves. We are created beings, and we are to submit to the revelation of our creator.
It stretches the mind, and how can God condemn that?
Keep on stretching out there beyond what God has commanded, and I am sure you will find out! God created the human mind to serve Him. When you apply it to other purposes, you land up outside His will.

I have to agree with you on the egotistic and obnoxious attitudes found in American Christianity. It is scary. We have no right to think of ourselves as morally superior, when we are murdering 4000 innocents a day in this country.

However, it is your opinon that “Religions should help built bridges, not walls”. Jesus was clear that followers would cause division in their families,a nd in society. Adherance to the Truth is always more important that social harmony.

What does any of this have to do with the topic? Do you think that the contents of the bible should be your own opinion also?

The fact is the Catholic church was not invented by men, but by God himself. The atrocities done in humanity is done by men, not the body of Jesus Christ. Jesus placed this “Rock” on earth to relieve man of his wrong doings. The Catholic Church has been the Champion for Life, the Poor, the sick and the needy. God has placed these here, not that you should seek blame, or to buffet his Catholic church for the injustices of humanity, God has placed these here so that you and I can have compassion, mercy, forgiveness in our humanity to Love our enemies and give to those who are in need. So that God may bless you and forgive us for our sins as we forgive those who trespass against us.

This is why the Catholic Church has been on earth these past 2000 years unchanged as the “Rock”. The only weapon that can unite humanity is LOVE, for God is Love. Without this divine arsenal, humanity will continue to experience these atrocities of humanity. God in his wisdom knows this, that is why the unchanging “Rock” is still here today in the Catholic church.

As far as laying blame to the members (humanity) of the Catholic church for their inhumane acts, does not negate the divinity of the Catholic church that is always Holy and ready to heal the sick and set the captives free. In other words, do not confuse what belongs to God give to (is) God and what belongs to Ceasar give to Ceasar.

Peace be with you:)

And where does it tell us that the Roman church and only those that it recognizes is the one true Church? Only you are saying that, nobody else. This proves zero.
There was no other Christians The Catholic Church East and West. All of the Protestant etc have what they have because it is the parts they took when they left the True Church. Yes there is truth in all the denominations, But only in the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is the fullness of truth found.

Catholics complain that there is some anti-Catholicism among Protestants and others. Your sentiment is the main reason for such prejudice.

Good Christians, in my view, may come in different colors, nationalities, and denominations. This foolish and prejudiced notion that all non-Catholics are wrong and only Catholics are right gives rise to resentment among many other sincere, devout Christians. Unfortunately, and frankly, the Bible is not always clear on many issues.

One example. If Mary is to be revered in the way Catholics revere her (all Christians honor her, by the way), why do those earliest books of the New Testament, the letters of St. Paul, completely omit any reference to her when he deals at length with various doctrines and practices that the early churches should embrace? Or, if Mary was a perpetual virgin why does Matt. 1:25 say "and Joseph *knew her not until* she had brought forth her *firstborn* son"? Some of us simply believe that a diversity of opinion is fine, that God certainly doesn't punish people for their sincere opinions which they base on scripture. The main focus of Christianity should be on love and not dogma. None of us knows very much when it comes to the essential mysteries of the universe, wits its millions of solar systems etc etc.

The idea of only one true church may have been acceptable in medieval Europe but we have come a long way from those days. For those who want to accept the authority of the Catholic Church, fine. God bless them. But most Americans don't - and fewer and fewer, as more and more Catholics pick and choose what they can in good conscience believe ('cafeteria Catholics' - most of my RC friends). Democracy has had its effect in religion as well as politics.

This is not to criticize the wonderful work the Catholic Church does in helping the poor, building hospitals and universities, and other outstanding achievements. But I believe in the 'big tent' that emphasizes peace and social justice and especially love and mutual respect rather than doctrinal conformity. Christians should work together without an air of superiority. Both Catholics and Protestants who have such an air defy the spirit of Christ who always was ready to deal with outsiders. Consider, as one example, the way he favorably depicted the Samaritans, who had their own religion.

God bless the whole world - no exceptions.

Gabriel of 12;
Catholics dont make the claim of themselves that their exists only one faith, one body (Church) one baptism, one Lord Jesus Christ, the bible makes this claim, Catholics believe the Word of God and obey it. Catholics dont make the claim that non catholics are wrong, The Catholic church has been given a mission from Jesus to proclaim the good news these 2000 years since the resurrection of our blessed Lord Jesus. She cannot and will not move from this truth, that is why Jesus made her “Rock”. Those who protest or of their own free will chose to be independent of the Church Jesus built upon Peter are free to do so, but are never rejected by the Catholic church. The Catholic church has her arms wide open to recieve them. But the Catholic church cannot change the “Rock” Jesus built for the will of man’s own desire, or be moved by every wind of doctrine that blows by in time.

When Catholics proclaim this truth, from history has proven that she will be persecuted according to the Words of Jesus himself. I dont understand how “prejudice” plays any factor here from a Catholics perspective. The Catholic Saints and Martyrs went to their deaths for this faith from antiquity with joy, not reserving themselves to motives of prejudice’s or hate but out of love these gave of themselves. This is what the Catholic church is built upon.

As far as interpretation of the bible, Jesus has left us his teachings and the Apostolic Tradition to follow him in his Sacraments and teachings. These interpretations of the bible have been handed down to us by the Apostles themselves and their apostolic successors in the Catholic bishops and Popes unchanged in the Magisterium of the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church. There is nothing wrong with ones own personal interpretation of the scriptures, we are at liberty to pray and meditate, reflect upon the Word of God ourselves, just as long it does not conflict with the teachings of Jesus and his Apostles. This is the unchanging Rock that we as Catholics cling to for the Church is the “Pillar of Truth”.

History proves that Protestants and non catholics are the ones who claim to their own interpretations of scripture and beliefs, and invent new non catholic christian doctrines of their own “late” interpretations, instead of following the Church Jesus built upon Peter. That is why you have a 20th century interpretation of Matthew 1:25 that protests the 2000 year old biblical interpretation of the same text, your interpretation is a new invention by men not Jesus or his Apostles teachings. Sure Protestants and non Catholics including non christians display Christian virtues of charity and love.

Peace be with you
