We can choose wrong.
We cannot be taken captive and “killed” by wrong.

umm…I’m no biblical scholar but I think that passage is referring to God as the destroyer, not satan. Satan can tempt but he can’t condemn.

catharina,
since you are correcting errors, care to respond to your error?

Alas…I am without the gift of self expression in an eloquent way…🤷

…in my little, no knowledge brain:blush:…soul killing and spirit killing are one in the same…go ahead tell me I’m wrong again…🤷
It’s not a question of self expression. It’s an issue of accuracy that can be muddled by personal feelings. Yes, soul and spirit have often had separate definition in the Church. Frankly, I thought everyone knew that. Frankly, I guess not.

Here, straight from the Catechism and **anyone **on this thread could have found it:

365 The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the “form” of the body:234 i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature.

366 The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God - it is not “produced” by the parents - and also that it is immortal: it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection.235

367** Sometimes the soul is distinguished from the spirit: St. Paul for instance prays that God may sanctify his people “wholly”, with “spirit and soul and body” kept sound and blameless at the Lord’s coming.**236 The Church teaches that this distinction does not introduce a duality into the soul.237 “Spirit” signifies that from creation man is ordered to a supernatural end and that his soul can gratuitously be raised beyond all it deserves to communion with God.238

368 The spiritual tradition of the Church also emphasizes the heart, in the biblical sense of the depths of one’s being, where the person decides for or against God.239

It’s tough getting routinely kicked in the teeth for being correct.
Guess it goes with the territory? Simmer down, ladies.

Wow. You sure pay attention to your own posts.
Now read the one about the encyclical from Pope Pius XII.

Thanks.

It doesn’t appear that others are the ones boiling over. Hmm.
:dts:
Oh, dear, forgive me please.
I’d thought this sounded rather edgy and rude:

Perhaps I was imagining things? However I was not imagining that the reckless use of the term “soul murder” is ripped straight form pop-psych culture and it’s ugly and it’s untrue and it needs no more promotion, especially from Catholics. Do hope you can grasp my point. If not … whatever.

I’m just trying to be as dogged about errors and accuracy as you are but you are ducking my question.

Again, read Post # 97.
My words echoed his in the quoted encyclical.
FIGURE IT OUT, OK?

No thank you. No need to get angry and shout.

You are the one who posted Matt 10:28 to make a very important point to teach us about soul murder. I think intellectual honesty behooves you to address or at the very least admit the error in your interpretation.

I shouted? How???

I have no desire or plan to “teach” anyone.
Yet I will correct anything I recognize as error.
This is a Catholic site, not a site for best-guess-wins.

My point about “soul murder” is that the term is a junk-science (pop-psych) error.
Faith teaches us that we follow God and kive forever or we follow satan and die.
I said it (numerous times).
Pope Pius XII said it.

So, what’s the problem?

Using all “caps” is shouting…😉

Using all “caps” is shouting…😉
Using all “caps” is shouting to a certain type of tech-heads.
Others don’t care a bit - esp in the “over 60 crowd.” I’m one of these.

I’d be really pleased if people used spell-check though. 😃

You might say its the letter of the law on the web. Even those who are not “tech heads” know that all caps is shouting.

I can’t complain about spelling…because I am the queen of elipses…😃

:okpeople:Now back to are regularly scheduled debate :slapfight:

Credibility.

Guess I’m more into the spirit of the law than the letter of the law.

Let me ask a question of you…since I really don’t know…are the Magisterium a group of people? I hope I get an honest answer.
The Magisterium is the teaching authority of the Church hierarchy from the time of the Apostles to the bishops in union with the pope today. The Magisterium is always infallible in matters of faith and morals. It is impossible for the Magisterium to be influenced by culture, the personal beliefs of individuals, customs external to the Church or anything that does not come directly from the Holy Spirit.

The Magisterium has been promsied that it will be protected by the Holy Spirit from error. This promise comes from Christ himself. We find it in the Gospels and Paul refers to it again in his letters when he speaks about him and the Apostles passing on what they received from Christ and how the laity must accept it without questioning, because it is absolute truth.

When the Magisterium says that in the hierarchy of sin abortion is more serious than sexual abuse, it is infallible. This is the way that God sees it and it is not up for discussion. That’s why we cannot have a roundtable discussion on the subject. What God reveals cannot be changed.

No one is denying the gravity of sexual abuse, especially the abuse of children. What we are protecting here is the hierarchy of moral gravity that has been revealed by God himself. There are many grave sins, but not all are equally grave. That does not mean that we should commit any of them. It means that the Church applies different consequences and different penalties according to what has been revealed.

Yes these men were mortal. But you believe what they said about the two natures in one person, without ever becoming blended. You believe what they said about the perpetual virginity of Mary. We believe what they say about the sacraments. We believe what they say about sin. We believe what they taught about the nature of God, the nature of Christ and the nature of grace. We believe what they have taught about the scriptures, not the other way around. So why do we suddently decide to disbelieve what they teach about the moral hierarchy of sin?

Not all the Fathers of the Church were male, just as not all the Doctors are male. But Latin uses the masculine form of the noun: Patres & Doctores, because you cannot use Fathers and Mothers in Latin, nor is there a female form for the term Doctor in either Latin or English.

Why are all of you arguing about this case? Don’t you realize that your salvation and that of the people in question here depends not on whether you can win the argument or whether you can prove someone right or wrong?

Your salvation depends on your total obedience to the Gospel as it is taught by the Catholic Church. Whether you win or lose, you prove or disprove, if you disobey the Gospel as it is taught by the Church, your salvation is in jeopardy.

Let us take more time to acquire the necessary graces to follow what we have been taught and less time to present and argue about our opinions. In the end, our opinions are irrelevant to God, only his revelation and our adherence to it, as taught by the Church, will be relevant at the time of our judgment.

Many thanks, Brother.
It’s surprising that many wish to ‘learn teachings’ only to argue against the teachings.

Please forgive my words of great discouragement.
Faith is a gift, a virtue. We use it or we lose it, IMO.
