What are you giving up for Lent this year?

No alcohol. Getting up immediately after the alarm rings. The latter will be more difficult…
I have told my Angel more than a few times how I wish he would take bodily form to give me a good flogging. 😄

I was going to pray a daily rosary but decided to just pray the rosary more often and attend Wednesday evening Mass.

I went to Mass this morning and my alarm went off to wake me. It plays music rather than buzzing or beeping. I don’t know how long I was hearing the alarm while 1/2 asleep before I realized I needed to get up. I did make it to Mass on time, though.

I’ve decided to give up my laziness and exercise daily. I hate exercise unless it’s skiing or hiking or horseback riding or some other sport. I may even join a gym (hate them).

I almost never eat sweets, don’t drink soda, coffee, or tea, and follow a healthy diet. I pray daily, meditate, etc., but I AM lazy about exercise. I’ll try to strengthen my body for the Holy Spirit and be more positive about the future to show my trust in God’s plan for me.

In other words, I’m going to give up being a slug, which I do enjoy.

My 12-year-old son gave up Reece’s for Lent. Yesterday a neighbor kid came over to visit, and brought him a 6-pack of Reece’s!
It’s just not Lent without temptation!

It should be a secret, for the most part. Isnt that what Jesus instructed in the Gospel?

Well, I think it’s okay to discuss on an internet forum. I think that if we wore a sign saying “I’m giving up sweets for Lent!” then that would be the wrong way to go about it. 🤣
I think partly the value of discussing it among ourselves (dare I say friends?), is to get ideas, share challenges, etc.

This could be a whole new marketing campaign for gyms!

Brussels sprouts. I am giving up Brussels sprouts. This will be sustainable.

I disagree. Though im not demonizing it… just dont think it helps to make it holy.

Discussing fasting in general is a different thing. But telling others what you are fasting, and how so, does not help the purpose.

I also live in the real world, where it is very common to ask one another. Though, I have to say that Protestants are more likely to ask us what we are “giving up”. Ironically, they do not care for the practice, but want to ask us to make known what should be between us and the Lord.

I don’t think anyone is saying giving up Hershey’s is the real interior penance we’re supposed to do.

We’re mostly anonymous and just sharing one part of Lent — it gives an insight into how other people find some things more/less difficult — we’re all different.

Part of the reason I even shared mine is because I considered it too trivial to consider it spiritual mortification. What’s there to hide? No one would think I’m a holy person because I did such trifle.

Perhaps if I gave up food for 40 days like Jesus, I would conceal that to myself.

Real penance is in one’s heart and the things denied without anyone knowing, perhaps without any planning.

No, not really. Not in the way you’re trying to use it concerning an innocent thread with an innocent question that nobody has to participate in if they don’t want to.

Advent & Lent are penitential seasons of the official liturgical calendar. A person doing some form of penance or another is simply doing what the Church already publicly recommends.

I agree with NuclearReceptor that generally these sacrifices aren’t the sort of thing that inspire deep awe or would make a person into a pretender. It’s something people share for insight.

In the section reserved for regular members, I’ve even created my own thread to talk & share reflections about my study & consecration during Lent. I’m really allegedly going against Jesus there 🙂

The first time I observed Lent, I had trouble trying to decide what I was going to do and how. The ideas from others and their plans that I saw on CAF really helped me figure mine out. I was grateful for it, so I figure others would be also for their planning.

I stated that discussion about fasting and the Church practice os different than sharing personal fasts that are suppose to be done in secret. Here is what Jesus actually says:

And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

We all know that we refrain from eating meat on Wed. and Fridays during Lent. And our meals should be minimal. But our personal, private fasts beyond that should be a secret.

I agree that Jesus was emphisizing those who gave an impression of suffering for recognition of men. But we should try to avoid that by our personal exploiting of our fast. The point Jesus made, was that it should be a secret so that only our Father in heaven sees! He even instructed us to try and hide the fact that we are fasting!

I find the point your’e trying to make to be neither here nor there on a Catholic forum in the Spirituality section on the anonymity of the internet where the section is specifically designed for spiritual growth & sharing.

How old were you? I think an adult should be able to choose what would be an appropriate fast. There are no rules to it. And I think that is what throws many Catholics. When they dont have a rule to follow, they try to mimic others.

Kinda like how alot of Catholics are uncomfortable with an open speaking prayer. They want to rely on the written ones only.

Ok. Thats your opinion.

But its not just on the internet, ya know? Its in the real world too. And whats the big difference anyway? Do u not think that people derive gratification from “internet appearance”?

Getting up immediately after the alarm rings
I can’t do this. I may fall down, I’ve found.
I also don’t use an alarm any more unless I have to get to the airport or put out trash before a certain hour.
My alarm goes off to tell me when to say Angelus, and sometimes it wakes me but sometimes I’m up already.

I was 21. And I knew there were no rules to it, but I was a brand new Catholic. It was special to me. I wanted it to prepare me for being received into the Church, and future Lents to come. Something that would bear fruit and last for after Lent, but not be too difficult (no cold showers!).
