What are you giving up for Lent this year?

It’s nice to see people that are happy about what others are giving up. 😏

I doubt the same Jesus that says we should not have glum faces when fasting would think that people should be presuming to know what others should or should not do for their Lenten experience.

Listen, im not saying everyone who shares what they are fasting is looking for glory. But the practice itself is not aimed at keeping the fast a secret, like Jesus guided.

Sometimes its funny when Catholics act like anything a Catholic does is just golden. How could a Catholic fall into the criticism of Jesus? Oh my, never!

Why be offended at a caution not to exploit your fast which we should actually hide from others???

I even admit that im criticizing myself! Im not standing on a platform looking down at others.

TK, you are so holy. I hope after you got your ashes that you went to Wal Mart to show them off to “the people of Wal Mart.” 😉

Actually, ashes are suppose to be a sign of humility and that we are sinners in need of forgiveness. There is an element of public confession that is righteous.

Its very different than a fast.

I’m giving up complaining, gossiping, swearing, and much of my time for more prayer and contemplation. I’m also attempting to fast everyday except Sunday.

Btw, the Church condemned flagellation. I know you were being sarcastic, but it was hardly meaningful.

But hey!!! You got some likes!!!

I don’t want to leave a sour note between us.

I don’t think you had any bad intentions in this thread. I do think the point you were trying to make was at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and in an inappropriate setting .That is only my opinion.

I am sorry if I offended. I should not have used humor in a way that came at your expense.

Last year was my first “Lent,” and I gave up meat (not fish), it was hard (and kind of expensive bc I’m not a huge veg person and love meat so i eat a lot of fish to replace, lol), but I’m doing same this year, as it really is a tangible daily reminder, and in an ideal world I’d be a vegetarian, but at least i can do for 40 days a year. Still easier than keeping kosher! 😉

Because: I am a private person and I get tired of the question each and every Lent. You may wonder. Peace

’ll be happy to eat those brussels sprouts for you.
Now, I’m sure that’s the first time in my life I’ve ever heard that. Ever.
I’ve always loved brussels sprouts. They’re itty bitty cabbages. And I love cabbage. It always surprises me when people turn up their noses at brussels sprouts and broccoli. Maybe I’m in the minority. But I’ve never needed either one doctored up to eat.

Now, cooked spinach…UGH!!! The only time I ate that was when our teacher decided to sit next to me in the cafeteria. That was the day both items I hate more than anything were on the menu - cooked spinach and liver. And i acted like both were the yummiest things in the world. My classmates even gave me theirs. And i ate those too just because the teacher was sitting next to me. I should’ve gotten an award for that performance.

When I got home, 🤢🤮🤮🤮

I also like (roasted) brussel sprouts. They’re slightly minty. And so cute looking.

Celery - now that’s penance-worthy vegetable.

Whether you are a private person or not, my point has been that what we fast shoul not be exploited. Jesus alludes that the nature of fasting is to hide it from others.

I dont think we should avoid talking about the meaning of fasting and provide examples in our explanation for those immature in the practice. But, like you say, the whole “What are you giving up for Lent” chat, rubs wrong.

I do believe there is a tendency for us, myself included, to take pride in our fasting. I think that notion is not condusive to holy fasting.

Its truly what I believe, and I speak as a sinner (repenting) truly worse than probably most in this thread!

Every year I hear the same question(s). It does aggravate me. Lent is my own private spiritual journey. It is a contract between God and I. Not God, you and I. If individuals want to share this short time of meditation, reflection and/or sacrifice or penance-fine and do so. Just don’t ask me. It feels-for me-an invasion of my inner sanctum. If you are a teenager, a new convert or a person that really needs help…don’t ask me 'cause I probably won’t say.
I have been a teacher of our youth many years. I love sharing the faith with them, and even relating to their struggles and concerns. I hope you dont mean that you would not share what fasting means and help them understand its benefit.

I havent always refrained from sharing what I may be fasting. But for the past few years, I have decidedly done so.

Video games, and drastically reducing my time spent on the internet and entertainment in general. Then using much of that time towards prayer and improving discipline in general (which is sorely lacking in some areas). Part of the plan of course is to kickstart a decent improvement post-Lent.

Real penance is in one’s heart and the things denied without anyone knowing, perhaps without any planning.
You’re right. Like you, I have other things I’m giving up, or doing, that I’m keeping just between myself and God.
