What are you giving up for Lent this year?

To some extent, yes. Otherwise millions of people wouldn’t be addicted to Facebook or other social media like this forum.

But I find the argument overall flat. I can scarcely imagine that reading a book or improving personal fitness or giving up chocolate or beer or sweets is the sort of thing that would cause a person to glow in self-adulation as other people admire him/her. What are you describing as it relates to this thread is, I believe, extremely unconvincing .

There’s lots of other things I don’t talk about.
People sharing one thing to be conversational often isn’t the sum total of everything they’re dealing with in life.

I think your reasoning would fit under learning about what fasting means and how to do it in general. Thats different than sharing what you are fasting with a bunch of people.

I see some of your point. I do.

I think we BOTH have valid points.

But its not just on the internet, ya know? Its in the real world too. And whats the big difference anyway? Do u not think that people derive gratification from “internet appearance”?
I could just as easily say you were doing the same by showing off that you have superior knowledge of Jesus’ teachings and that people posting here are all doing it wrong.

I’d rather just think of this as us all having a nice chat, though.

The difference is that im actually using Jesus to guide our approach to fasting!

Im not even claiming to be fasting at all, or that i sacrifice things for spiritual benefit

Fasting can be anything at all! Even letting other eat before you, or giving up things spontaneously. It doesnt have to be one particular thing we give up.

There you go again, as Ronald Reagan said.
How do you know others of us aren’t using Jesus?
How do you know how much Scripture has been read, Adoration attended, rosaries said, consciences examined, long talks with God had in private?
You don’t know.
So please just stop.

Stop what? Encouraging others to keep their fast a secret? No, not when Jesus says the opposite.

For the sake of His sorrowful passion,
Have mercy on us and on the whole world.
You are not understanding me at all.

There are other aspects of fasting that gets scewed up in our world too. Take the all you can eat fish fries, for example. We give up meat on friday and go stuff purselves with a delicious fish dinner. Is that a holy fast?

I plan to be of a “merry heart” Prov. 15:13,15, instead of
having a sorrowful heart and concerned about my afflict-
ions!!

I also plan to cut down on caffeine coffee/coke and
drink tea(which has a milder form of caffeine and
decaf coffee).

I agree. In this or another thread, I said 2 of the things I was giving up for Lent. Maybe one of them is not something someone else would have thought of, and now they have. But I have things that are between me and God that I won’t post.

I see nothing wrong with participating if someone wants to share, but I do not understand why anyone comes to a thread and tells other people they aren’t going to say, or that no one else should either. It really is none of their business what other people do, only what they do.

Friday is not a church-mandated fast day. It is an abstinence day.
(The exception is Good Friday, but no one I know hosts or attends a fish fry on that day.)

Fish fries at church are fundraisers for the church, often at churches that can definitely use the money.

People who choose to attend them are not engaged in a fast on that day, holy or otherwise. If you wish to fast, you can do that on your own, or attend one of a number of churches sponsoring a fasting activity that night.

I like to support church fish fries.
I fast on days other than Friday, except of course for Good Friday, on which day there is no church fish fry anywhere I go.

Who said anything about stuffing oneself? Is there a difference between me frying some fish for my family at home, or going out to have some at my church?

Or is the next thing that no, we shouldn’t be eating fish at all? Maybe just have a cup of gruel and some lukewarm water from a dirty glass?

I didnt mean Church fish fries. Im not criticizing the Church, but those of us (i know im not the only one!) who refrain from meat, but eat all we can at the restaurant and think its spiritual.

Yeah, no one could have thought of fasting cookies! Good idea
