Blossoms in the dust. Greer Garson. Based on a true story
All Mine to Give, these two get your hankie

Now for the Eighties:
Princess Bride (I can’t belive it’s been 30 years!)
Roxanne with Steve Martin
Crossing Delancey
Moonstruck, for Olympia Dukais’ Rose. (I’m not kidding she’s the best.)

More recent…

The Princess Bride
The Three Amigos
Continuing with the 80’s…
  • Amadeus (a must for any music lover. It changed the music world!)
  • Dead Poets Society
  • Chariots of Fire
There was a Golden Age of Australian Cinema, in the 70’s and 80’s, which produced some innovative movies, that stand out both for their Australian cultural value, and enduring merit:
  • The Cars that Ate Paris (low budget horror!)
  • Sunday Too Far Away
  • Picnic at Hanging Rock
  • The Getting of Wisdom
  • Mad Max
  • Gallipoli
  • Breaker Morant (My favourite, here)
The Adventures of Barry MacKenzie. Aussie humor at its best.

And…er… Crocodile Dundee, which Americans seem to love…

The Ghost and Mrs Muir!
It’s a wonderful life
Guys N Dolls

We could do this all night…

No, I’m pretty sure the oldest one is a silent, lasting twenty minutes or so. Scrooge is from the 1950’s and is a British production. You may be thinking of the Hollywood version from the 1930’s, with Reginald Owen and June Lockhart. That one’s OK, but it lacks the strong emotional component which is one of the many strengths of the Sim version.

Nope, I’ve never seen an old American version (and honestly didn’t know one existed). It’s the Alastair Sim version for sure. Just looked it on Amazon.

It definitely couldn’t have been the silent one. LOL.

she was my idol too. The Castaways,
Summer Magic. i was disappointed when she made her first grownnup role.
i think her Dad directed it or was in it.
it might have been The Truth About Spring, but i am not sure or The Chalk Garden. i didn’t like either one.

Moonstruck is awesome! So many great lines:

“Old man, you give those dogs another piece of my food, I’m gonna kick you 'til you’re dead.”

“Do you love him, Loretta?”
“No.”
“Good. When you love 'em they drive you crazy, 'cause they know they can.”

“Bring me the big knife!”

“A wolf without a hand!”
“A bride without a head!”

“I love two things: I love you, and I love the opera.”

Just love this movie! 😂 🤣 😂

Michael Hordern is Marley’s Ghost in the Sim version, and I agree, he is pretty frightening. Funny, as normally he’s more of a light comic actor. Just goes to show how talented he was. I saw him as King Lear once, a role that’s anything but comic, and he was quite good.

Yes, Moonstruck! I think the whole cast is exceptional, Cher in particular. Had no idea before this that Cher could really act. Wonderful movie.
Roman Holiday
Argo
Hate to admit it but I love some of the original 3 Stooges movies. Stupid funny. But I loved Dumb and Dumber too.
The Incredibles
Rebecca
High Noon
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Lillies of the Field
Twelve Angry Men
A River Runs Through It. Book is wonderful, too.
The 12 part 1970s miniseries, Brideshead Revisited
