What are your thoughts on women dressing modestly?

I’d love to know where all you ladies shop who can’t seem to find conservative clothes. I never have a problem. There are about 30 catalogs and online retailers offering clothing that meets the definitions of “modest” on this thread and doesn’t look like a feed sack. I have bought from them all because I need clothes for work that are comfortable and don’t put my groceries on display.

Here are some of them: Garnet Hill, Buykud, Marketplace Handwork of India, Serengeti Fashions, Deva by Cammy, The Vermont Country Store, Lands End, Potpourri Gifts, Zulily, Coldwater Creek. I think I may have bought something from that Eshakti place posted above too, although I don’t like most of their styles or fabrics.

Some of these places show models in dresses that hit just above the knee, but in most cases those hit a couple inches below my knee because I’m several inches shorter than the model, and the skirts that they show as mid-calf are usually closer to ankle on me.

Not hard at all to find stuff, anyway.

There is nothing wrong with pretty, elegant, fun or even fashionable as long as it’s feminine and modest !

Ain’t nothing wrong with being utilitarian or androgynous either, if that’s your cuppa tea.
I like wearing a tutu and ballet flats these days 😍

I think some people see one or two immodest pieces and give up.

I get a lot of my clothes from a regional chain that always has long camis in store and online. The camis are great for layering but also modesty and comfort; I’m long-waisted so anything that isn’t cut longer will ride up and show the waist of my trousers or more; camis prevent showing skin or a sudden draft if I raise my arms. The store also consistently, save for a season here or there, carries tops that are longer even when fashion trends are more cropped. And they have good sales; I head straight for the clearance rack when I shop.

Or they feel the need to constantly pointing out that they are that modest that they can´t find anything in a worldly, sinful place like H&M where all the non-believers shop. Sometimes, it feels -to me - like this was the reason.

I always thought modesty meant not bringing undue attention to oneself. If everyone else is wearing pants and you show up wearing a burka, although you are covered, I don’t think you are being modest.

And of course there’s me living in India where the latest fashion is most always modest, simply because traditional clothes were designed that way.

A lot of girls are following western styles now and the ones who wear leggings as pants are either so thin that their legs look like straight thin poles or go everywhere by car.

I love the India styles in the Marketplace catalog. The fabrics are really interesting, and also, in India they seem to not expect every woman to weigh 105 pounds.

Well that is only slightly true. Being thinner (and fairer) is preferred. And most girls are just so darn thin. Girls who are overweight have a heard time. Either some moron on the road teases them, or they by themselves develop some sorta inferiority complex. I’ve also heard of parents constantly yelling at their children to lose weigh t. I really haven’t heard of anyone suffering from eating disorders, so I guess it’s a bit better, but the problem still exists. Heck, my own classmate barely has any food. She thinks she’s too fat and would barely eat. I screamed my top off and managed to convince her that she’s trying to kill herself. She’s finally having some food again.

I believe you’re a woman, correct?
Male anatomy makes them… less than ideal, IMO

For people my age, it’s actually pretty difficult to find dresses that hit below the knee and don’t have 2,000 cut outs in the middle, and no dangerously low necklines. I spent last summer going to the mall weekly just in search of one dress that fit those guidelines. I found one, out of all the shops. Forever21 is pretty bad with this, (we don’t have an H&M, so don’t know about that one) Francesca’s, American Eagle all came out in the negative. Shopping online helps fix a lot of that though.

I agree. Much of the modest clothing available looks too matronly for a young woman. That is why I like eshakti…

Just checked out the website. Looks great, but it’s annoying how they have offices in India but don’t ship to India. facepalm

I’m 18. A lot of stores I go to are just trying to keep up with the trends and marketing to the younger crowd, so I never really expected much else anyhow. Sometimes its just easier to stick with jeans.
