As compared to other developed nations, the US has among the highest per capita of gun-related homicides. The BBC has an interesting breakdown:

What can we do about the shootings? Moral Theology
Gun control doesn’t have to mean banning guns. I live in Canada. We have guns here. Lots of them. Not even close to how many we have in the US though. We lead the world in civilian owned guns per capita by an enormous margin. And the US has had “weapons grade” gun control since 1934, when all selective fire weapons were made “NFA Title II weapons,” which means they are all Heavily regulated by the federal government. Added to that, are the innumerable gun control laws that further restri…
So clearly the 2nd Amendment is not some great guarantor that you won’t be killed by a bullet.

I’ll just simply have to disagree with you. Just because you know two people who own them doesn’t mean it’s not rare. Among the population as a whole, ownership of automatic weapons is very rare because of how tightly regulated it is. That statement is factually accurate. The use of automatic weapons in crimes is also rare in this country, and those that are used in crimes are almost always illegally obtained on the black market, usually by gang members in drug organizations. That statement is also factually accurate.

Step 1: don’t do anything rash (like call for universal gun confiscation. That would be like sending everyone to Hell because of one person’s mortal sin).

Step 2: remove leaders from office who are more concerned about painting their political opposition as evil than they are taking any action to prevent these attacks in the future

Step 3: spend some time actually trying to find out why mass shootings have become so commonplace in the past several decades when they weren’t before

WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and 50 million murdered unborn children and everyone continues to argue about how the government can solve the problem of violence.

That is a horrible thing to say. It is completely untrue. Shame on you for saying it.

I always think “Stop making gun ownership a right.” But no one wants to actually do that.
It is when people discuss the actual process to do this that they realize just how unpopular this particular route is.

More people understand they need the 2nd amendment in place then those that want it removed.

That is what I think needs to happen. No one really seems interested into finding the root cause of these horrible attacks. Instead, they exploit the attacks to push their own personal political agendas. We have always had lots of guns in this country. We have not always had mass shootings. Something changed. That’s what we have to figure out and solve.

Personally, I think the problem is rooted in the gradual destruction of family life and the rejection of God/religion/virtue/morality in personal and public life. Those are the changes I see that probably contribute greatly to the rise of extreme violence. There is a palpable lack of empathy for others. And for some people it’s just enough to push them over the edge between being really angry versus being really angry and lashing out so violently.

Me too. I can’t carry in a school, obviously, so I have to know how to weaponize other common classroom items in the event of a school invasion…
And in a country with the right to bear arms enshrined in our Bill of Rights, Isn’t That Ridiculous? On its face? Our supreme law recognizes that you can carry guns for lawful purposes, and here you are trying to figure out how to disable a potential murderer by hitting him with the corner of a chalkboard eraser.

Fire extinguisher is the best—spray then club. Scissors or even a pen in the throat. Maybe I’ll get some pet rocks.

Not need. Want. Loads of countries don’t have a 2nd amendment style right to bear arms and frankly do.much better than the US without it.

Agreed, most of these shooters were raised by single mothers. The destruction of the family needs to be addressed.
Excellent - let’s set up a government program to give a father to every fatherless child How many can I sign you up for?

Can we please try to think globally here?

People always resort to finger pointing at a societal decline (lack of religion, father, education etc) but fail to acknowledge other countries also have these social problems but don’t have the violent gun crime the US does.

The UK (London in particular) has a increasing crime rate but does not have mass shootings. Knife crime occurs but it is generally gang related.

I’d much rather face a knife than a gun.

The USA is by far the most populous country in the developed western world, so it should not be surprising that it has more crimes of every kind. And possibly its population is 10% larger than the “official” number due to the influx of illegal immigrants. It also has a younger population. Most violent crimes are committed by young men. Look at Mexico which has a younger population and far tougher gun laws, but has a much higher murder rate than the U.S.

But it isn’t as if there have been no mass murders in Europe.

And killing is killing, no matter how many perps are responsible for how many murders. Unless they catch all of the perps, and I’m sure they don’t, they don’t know how many actual perps there are. Maybe one person has killed 20 so far this year.
