If the remake of a classic movie was guaranteed to be as good or better than the original, what would you like a remake of?

For me it would be:

The Godfather
Gone With The Wind
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Searchers
Jaws

Gone with the Wind, for sure; but how in the world would it be as good as the original?! Another is Goodbye, Mr. Chips, which was remade with Peter O’Toole, no less, but was not as good as the original with Robert Donat. Also Inherit the Wind, which has been done to death, both in the movies and in the theater, but none of the remakes, although they had great actors, compare to the original with Spencer Tracy and Fredric March. Finally, remakes of Casablanca and Citizen Kane, but again…

Well, off the top of my head I can only think of one movie remake that was genuinely as good as the original. This is assuming that we’re talking original scripts and not, for example, the umpteen movie adaptations of literary classics like Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice and so on.

For mine it is Cape Fear. Both the Mitchum and De Niro versions are great.

I hold Philadephia Story and High Society (a musical adaptation of it) both in equally high regard, but a musical rejigging is not the same thing as a remake.

With the removal of the confederate civil war statues in some states now, it might be
politically incorrect to even watch this movie at some point in our future. I guess we are supposed to pretend the Civil War never happened!
I have never seen Good-bye, Mr. Chips.

Casablanca and Citizen Kane would be two good films for remakes. The original actors put their imprints on these characters.
I do not know why the acting and the films of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s were so much better quality than what we get today.

None! Remakes are always modernized disasters in my mind. I am perfectly content with back and white originals.

Do not like remakes of any classical movies. They’re classics; if it isn’t broken; don’t fix it.

I wouldn’t remake those films mentioned in the OP, especially not “The Godfather” or “Gone with The Wind”

Maybe a film based on a play. Like “Come Back Little Sheba” or any of films based on Tennessee Williams. The Elia Kazan ones I wouldn’t remake, because Vivian Leigh was perfect as Blanche. But maybe “Suddenly Last Summer”. I also think the Italian film “Umberto D” could work set in current time. Old man not being able to make ends meet getting evicted with his little dog would be very relevant.

Maybe a modern version of “Marty”.

I actually would be interested in a GoTW remake, but more so I could do a MSTK on the Politically Correct sexfest it would undoubtedly become, much like the Roots remake. Not because I expect to be any better than the original.

I loved the movie version of Marty, I watched it when it was shown on a PBS station, but apparently is technically a “remake” itself, the original version was actually a Made for TV movie.

In any case I would NOT want to see a modern version because I’m sure the leads would fall into bed together despite having just met each other, as that is standard fare for modern Hollywood romances, even those set in time periods when “dating” was not considered equivalent with “having a regular sex partner”.

“Safe” - the one with Julianne Moore. I absolutely love this movie (and know people with environmental illness not unlike what’s depicted in the movie), but the way it’s directed is just way too weird. A remake may not be an improvement but it wouldn’t hurt.

“The Bellboy” with Jerry Lewis - it’s one of the funniest movies ever made but there are a lot of people who don’t like Jerry Lewis (for a variety of reasons) and perhaps a remake of “The Bellboy” would help that solve that problem. The Nutty Professor was already remade, so who knows?

“24 Hour Party People” - the music biopic about Manchester (i.e., specifically the old-school punk era from the 70’s.) It already feels dated, and it’s not exactly an old movie. I wish it could be remade for 90’s-era Manchester scene: maybe Oasis, in particular.

The TV miniseries “The Day After.” Enough said.

I liked the remake of True Grit, parts were better than the original, Bridges did a good job portraying the character that legend, John Wayne played.

Not sure I would want classics re-done in this day and age.

This ending scene of the True Grit remake was memorable

I know the movie Stagecoach was remade twice - 1966 and a version for television in the 1980’s I believe.

The classic Rear Window was remade with Christopher Reeves in the role that Jimmy
Stewart played. I have not seen that version.

IMO it is sheer madness to remake ANY Alfred Hitchcock film with another director.

Rod Steiger was in the TV version I believe. I think I might have seen a bit of it in PBS a number of years ago. I don’t remember off hand but I think some of the TV actors might been cast in the film. I’ll look it up.

If I were a film maker, I’d keep the script for Marty basically the same and just change things that date the film. Like the line “just packed with Tomatoes”. Marty was only supposed to be 35. I’m not sure how old Borgnine was when ha made it, but he looked older than 34.

There was a version of Psycho that was shot frame by frame to copy the original. I haven’t seen it though.

On a different note. I heard that Bewitched reused old scripts from when it was black and white with the first Darren for the color version with the new Darren. I’ll look it up later to see if that is true.

I don’t know if any modern day director could beat Alfred Hitchcock!
Yep, while technically not a remake the “Bates Motel” series portrayed Norman as a completely different type of psycho than the original did. Now granted I only watched a few episodes so they may have eventually gotten to that point. Not sure if the original Norman was meant to be a virgin or just very sexually repressed, but the TV Norman is neither.

I’ll pass. The classics are classic for good reason, they should not be messed with!

I never saw any of the Psycho remakes.

“Bates Motel” was a huge rip-off of “Twin Peaks,” which I could spot a mile away. Now that “Twin Peaks” is back for a limited run, it will be interesting to see if anyone thinks it’s derivative of “Bates Motel.”
