What do Catholics and Protestants have in common that makes us family?

Unfortunately, their reasoning exhibits a profound lack of understanding of Scripture and the God who inspired it on their part.
Some old story, you read a book and interpret it your own way. That interpretation may be a stark contrast to what the author intended to transmit.

So if we have a transmission of the Word in question, who should we believe, and why?

They don’t eat beef of lamb, either, even though these are permitted.
If you’re implying all SDA Christians who do not eat pork and shellfish are vegetarians and do not eat beef or lamb you are mistaken.

I understand what they are saying. Unfortunately, their reasoning exhibits a profound lack of understanding of Scripture and the God who inspired it on their part.
No it only lacks the understanding of Scripture as you and your faith understands it to be. God’s blessings along your faith journey. Peace

Leviticus 20:13 And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

That verse seems pretty clear to me, 2 men that lie down together as 1 man and 1 woman, :hmmm: geee what could they possibly be doing?

It seems that you are using a very legalistic approach to this issue, that since in the Bible you cannot find the word “homosexual relation” therefore you deduce that the Bible is silent on the subject.

The epitome of “what is the definition of IS is”

I’ll pray that when you do eventually have to face the supreme judge He shows you the same professional courtesy.
The Torah portion of the Hebrew Bible is quite legalistic: according to Judaism, it is the Law. Notice the passage from Leviticus you quote makes no reference to female homosexuality. That is why interpretation of the Law is required by means of the Talmud and, for some Jews, the Kabbalah.

Baptism and our faith in Christ unite us. The Catholic Church considers all Christians baptized with the trinitarian rite, intending to baptise to be in imperfect union with the Church.

In my experience, having looked into many Protestant denominations before I was reconciled with the Church, every one of them, to one degree or another, was founded on denying some aspect of Catholic doctrine. Trying to get all those groups to agree, much less be reunited with the Catholic Church, would be like herding cats. 😃
Hi Della,

I am a new member so try to go easy on me. I am not very well read as most of my last 40 years of life has been concerned with daily survival running my little business.
I do go to church and have been part of a church music group for almost 15 years.
Your statement that most Protestant denominations were founded on denying some aspect of Catholic doctrine is mostly true. What about Martin Luther. He was a Catholic Priest who saw a wrong policy in the church and opposed it. I am referring to the indulgences issue. I know the church now agrees with his viewpoint on that issue
and I know that the reason Lutherans cannot be reconciled to the Catholic Faith is because Luther’s overstepping the rules regarding who can give Holy Orders as well as other issues. I never hear any Catholics praising Martin Luther but I think he deserves some thanks for standing up to the church and correcting a huge wrong. What do you think?

How so? Christianity grew out of the Jewish religion…and is a fulfillment of Judaism…or the full flowering of Judaism…so you are saying then that SDA is a totally different religion that grew out of their own interpetation of a Christian book?

As the Bereans in the Acts of the Apostles searched Scripture at the time, there are many Christians who read. And they seek to discern what is intended. They strive to listen to the Holy Spirit’s direction in their lives as they seek understanding. Some believe God is still speaking.

The truth is not a one of us walking the earth as we approach the yr 2013 was doing so when Jesus walked upon the earth. We walk by faith. Not by sight. Faithful Catholics believe and place faith in the interpretation the Catholic Church gives for Herself. In Her interpretation of Scripture. In Her interpretation of history and the ECF’s. Not believing She has ever strayed nor that Christ has ever needed to reform His Church along the way. Others believe differently.

Of course Christians differ on some matters. And it is not relativism. It is merely the truth. Obviously not everyone is going to be correct on everything. We can believe we know. But the truth is we will not truly know with certainty until we die and when in faith we stand before Him and His mercy and His understanding of us, of our minds, and of our hearts. Or when He comes again. Whichever comes first for us.

In the meantime all Christians, Catholics and non Catholic Christians, indeed all people of faith, walk by faith and not by sight. God bless you and all who journey. Peace and goodwill to all upon HIs earth.

Leviticus says many things which many Christians do not adhere to. I know SDA Christians do not eat pork or shellfish though.
SDA Christians eat no meat pursuant to Genesis 1:29

You must not know SDA Christians as I do who keep the 7th day Sabbath, who do not wear make up, who do not eat pork or shellfish. But who do eat beef, lamb and poultry.

  1. Christian Behavior:
We are called to be a godly people who think, feel, and act in harmony with the principles of heaven. For the Spirit to recreate in us the character of our Lord we involve ourselves only in those things which will produce Christlike purity, health, and joy in our lives. This means that our amusement and entertainment should meet the highest standards of Christian taste and beauty. While recognizing cultural differences, our dress is to be simple, modest, and neat, befitting those whose true beauty does not consist of outward adornment but in the imperishable ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit. It also means that because our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to care for them intelligently. Along with adequate exercise and rest, we are to adopt the most healthful diet possible and abstain from the unclean foods identified in the Scriptures. Since alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and the irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics are harmful to our bodies, we are to abstain from them as well. Instead, we are to engage in whatever brings our thoughts and bodies into the discipline of Christ, who desires our wholesomeness, joy, and goodness. (Rom. 12:1, 2; 1 John 2:6; Eph. 5:1-21; Phil. 4:8; 2 Cor. 10:5; 6:14-7:1; 1 Peter 3:1-4; 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; 10:31; Lev. 11:1-47; 3 John 2.)
Note Lev 11 is referenced. Peace.

You’re right I don’t know those kind of SDA members. I only went to 1 SDA church and my view of the SDA was only from my involvement at that 1 church. Every Sabbath there was a vegetarian pot luck served after the morning service. Genesis 1:29 was pointed out to me on numerous occasions and I am sure more SDA churches follow that instruction than the one I went to. I don’t go there anymore but I enjoyed the bible studies and the mood of hospitality there. Thanks for sharing.

How so is simple. People of faith have different understandings. I don’t wish this to turn into a continuing SDA discussion though as I’m sure that was not the OP’s intent. But instead since I am not SDA I will merely direct you to their official website if you have an interest in learning more about their beliefs They believe the universal church is composed of all who truly believe in Christ. Perhaps this will help:
  1. Church:
The church is the community of believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. In continuity with the people of God in Old Testament times, we are called out from the world; and we join together for worship, for fellowship, for instruction in the Word, for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper, for service to all mankind, and for the worldwide proclamation of the gospel. The church derives its authority from Christ, who is the incarnate Word, and from the Scriptures, which are the written Word. The church is God’s family; adopted by Him as children, its members live on the basis of the new covenant. The church is the body of Christ, a community of faith of which Christ Himself is the Head. The church is the bride for whom Christ died that He might sanctify and cleanse her. At His return in triumph, He will present her to Himself a glorious church, the faithful of all the ages, the purchase of His blood, not having spot or wrinkle, but holy and without blemish. (Gen. 12:3; Acts 7:38; Eph. 4:11-15; 3:8-11; Matt. 28:19, 20; 16:13-20; 18:18; Eph. 2:19-22; 1:22, 23; 5:23-27; Col. 1:17, 18.)

Hi ES, I understand. My SDA experience has mostly been with my SDA friends along with taking the Discover Bible online study ( I passed with a certificate) 🙂 and reading a bit on their official website. Thank you for sharing as well.

Catherine of Sienna was ignored by the pope, cardinals, bishops in her quest for reform…yet she persevered and did not lose her trust in the Lord.
I don’t believe Martin became a Catholic Priest to split from the church but did his best to oppose evil and wrong and it is natural to divide yourself from the group you are opposing. Yes - I do think it better to heal the group and try to change from within. We are living in times where that is made possible. Thank you for sharing with me.
The point is…do not lose your trust on the Lord…and reform the Church…not disobey…as pointed out by this passage:

1 Samuel 15:22-23
22 But Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”

Of what good are one’s intentions if they are borne of the disobedience of the Lord? or cause a split of the Lord’s body?

Just to follow up - I was told by the SDA that if a member eats meat it is not considered a sin. It is more along the lines of good health.

Your quote applies to Luther and to the misguided church of the time.
I believe that Luther may have submitted to the church in time but it took
centuries for the church to officially admit their mistake.

The thing Catholics and Protestants
have in common is they act with a real desire to love and serve God.
With that our goal shall be reached. God’s spirit can guide
us both if we truly seek Him and desire to follow his true teachings.
