What do Traditional/Orthodox Catholics Do for Fun Outside of Mass?

I don’t understand. The Church doesn’t teach that everything we do should be pleasing to God? Which above approach? I don’t see how that passage disagrees with what you posted above.

I guess I don’t really know what you mean by “pleasing to God…”

You’re allowed to enjoy a great tasting meal, laugh and share jokes with friends, watch an entertaining movie, get a professional massage, go to Disney World, dance your heart out, etc etc…

So long as they don’t cross the boundaries of morality, you are allowed to do those things, and you are allowed to enjoy them.

You don’t have to spend all your free time in prayer, you don’t have to be constantly doing holy deeds… (though you can if you want to!)

You’re allowed to do fun things that have nothing to do with God directly.

Though indirectly, you are pleasing God by enjoying His gifts all around you.

Does that help you understand where I am coming from?
 
I read Russian literature. Oh, and I like to read up on liturgically-minded blogs.

Yes, LOL.

But I think you totally misunderstand me.

You must think I’m really umm… Well, hopefully you can fill in the blank.

The point is even if dancing, eating, watching a movie, we have to be sure that we’re not doing anything that is offensive to God.

So technically, it may be funny to laugh at Walmart pictures, but if you think about it, it really isn’t a good thing as a child of God to pass around pictures that make fun of people, even if they seemingly deserve it.

So it may or may not be a venial sin, but on our path to holiness, we have to think about these things.

I’m just being extra cautious because I remember what thread you are referring to when a certain individual was making the claim that we can’t really do anything fun outside of holy deeds… or something?? I dunno. But that was kinda silly I thought.

Exactly! Which is why we’ve all stressed here that it’s ok as long as something isn’t sinful, or becomes sinful by being too consuming. (though we also have to watch out for scruples)
Offensive to God = sin.

Actually, I would think it IS a sin to sit and go through those photos and laugh and send them around… no one “deserves” being made fun of.

I didn’t agree with him per se on that thread, but I understood where he was coming from.

I think it’s important to remember that what’s fun for someone may not be fun for another.

Also, depending on where you are in your spiritual life, things that used to be really fun are not so fun anymore and you might develop new interests.

I used to spend hours on Youtube discovering new metal bands. I don’t do that anymore. It doesn’t mean I don’t listen to metal. I just don’t listen as much as I used to.

Why? Because I’m busy browsing CAF discussing Catholicism, reading spiritual books, etc. And I’m having so much fun!

I just don’t have the time what with all my devotions and visits to casualty when I take the old mortifications a little too far.

I like to learn Gregorian Chant on my own (the notation, modes, how to chant etc.). Only if there is no one else in the house (When my parents have gone out) because since I’m only a beginner, my chanting sounds a bit amateurish. So its a bit embarrassing if someone else hears it. But I am improving though.

Otherwise I take a keen interest in classical music of the baroque period so I love listening to Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Telemann etc.

I’m also learning a musical instrument. Since its my first instrument, its the Recorder

I love both Gregorian chant and Baroque music! I’m learning Music for a While.

Any of the geeks on here go to conventions, like Star Trek?
 
Rockclimbing, hiking, games nights, going out for dinner, Catholic retreats (one I go to is Marian Village), March for Life -in Brisbane it begins this February 2012 🙂 , cooking at someone’s home - e.g. home-made pizza 🙂 , beach for the day, camping (girls and guys separate), watch appropriate movies, mini-golfing/putt-putt, adoration monthly, arts and crafts - e.g. make rosaries and holy pictures in hand-made frames…

There are quite a lot more fun things you can do too 😃
 
We do a lot of things for fun. Most of these activities involve our family. My husband and I belong to a Community Choir, we picnic, play music, sing at various events, eat out, and hang out with each other. What we do not do is make fun of people or laugh at the way they dress.

When I receive e-mail photos of Walmart Customers, I delete them without comment. I don’t appreciate them however.
