What do Traditional/Orthodox Catholics Do for Fun Outside of Mass?

I’ve never really understood what “Orthodox” Catholic means…I’m definitely “traditional”, though. Due to logistics, I go to both the EF and OF masses. If “Orthodox” means adhering to pre V2 Catholicism, then that’s me.
I grew up “traditional” (50’s and 60’s) and we did the same things other people did, Catholic or not, as did my other Catholic friends.
Definitely NOT a tv watcher at all. IMO 99% of what’s on tv today is garbage. I do like the History Channel.
I’m very conservative, so I hang out with like minded folks and we enjoy most of the same things other people do, I garden a LOT, as do my friends. Reading good fiction, bio’s, 50’s and 60’s “oldies music”, woodworking, piano, occasional sporting events. I’m not married, don’t have kids, but spend a lot of time with my numerous nieces and nephews and enjoy them enormously. I enjoy being the “cool uncle”.
OK… I’m boring ! (But happy !)

Here is something that you guys might find “Fun” (ahem)

I was heads-down working on a customer design, thinking about all kinds of web servers and email servers and blade servers and unified communication servers, when I get a popup for an incoming email. The subject is “Altar Servers.”

I’m thinking to myself, “What in the world is an altar server?” I’ve heard of web servers, mail servers, streaming media servers, active directory servers, unified communication servers but have never worked with “Altar” software or an “Altar Server.”

Maybe it’s a typo? Maybe they mean “Alter” as in Alternate servers" and are asking about some sort of high availablity design, DR or site failover?

Then I open the mail and it’s talking about the “Attached is this month’s altar server schedule” and I’m still like, what is an altar server and why would they have schedules???

So I open the schedule and… oh yea… duh! They’re talking about me. I’m the “Altar” server.

Silly IT guy needs a vacation.

Currently I work on back-end interfacing of health systems using HL7 V2.x standards. I work for a large Canadian hospital EMR and telecomm provider). I am currently working on radiology (RIS and PACS) to EMR interfaces, as well as document scanning interfaces.

In my previous job (another EMR vendor) we used VMWare virtualized servers a lot. In my current job I work on Ministry of Health servers (windows 2008 server). Never bothered to check if they’re virtual or a physical machine, I access them remotely to configure the applications.

I have a bit of Exchange 2003 experience. When I went back to school a year or two ago we covered Exchange 2003, which consisted of installing and some configuration. I have my MCSA_Messaging, but I’m out of practice with it.

Get enough of that on the day job

My wife’s Mac’s crashes more than my PC, and she does things (composing) that Mac’s are apparently best at. Meanwhile, I do graphic design and post production work on my PC with zero issues,

The only problems I see with blue screens and Windows are other people’s computers, and it’s usually because the user did something to it. Which makes me sincerely believe that outside of M.E. and Vista, most Windows issues have to do with User Interface Problems.

Windows XP, I ran from 2006 to 2010 with zero blue screens. Windows 7, none so far.

Oh, plus the fact I can upgrade my PC with no problems. You know, if I want to throw in an ATI 5850 I can do that.

I had a conversation yesterday with a group of trads who said all rock music was Satanic. So obviously they don’t listen to rock.

Does anyone listen to rock for fun and not consider rock to be Satanic, per se?

I’m a huge fan of Theme Parks, so I like to visit those. I also thoroughly enjoy traveling, site-seeing, and especially visiting other Catholics churches & chapels. I recently just got back from the March for Life in Washington DC where I had the privilege of seeing the National Basilica as well as a Franciscan Monastery. To your average 19 year old guy, I doubt that would sound like an ideal day, but I couldn’t have been more overjoyed.

What a conincidence, my wife and I also went to DC for the March, we also visited the Basillica (though not the Franciscan Monastery). We loved DC, turned it into a vacation showing up the saturday before and leaving the tuesday after. We were very very very blessed to have our parents (with rewards points, my dad travels far too much) get us a very nice room in the Georgetown Holiday Inn on Wisconsin. That was a fantastic trip.

I had a conversation yesterday with a group of trads who said all rock music was Satanic. So obviously they don’t listen to rock.

Does anyone listen to rock for fun and not consider rock to be Satanic, per se?

My wedding dinner had my wife’s favorite stuff, which was filled with classical music.

The dance/reception after the dinner my favorite stuff, which consisted of liberal amounts on Bon Jovi, Scorpions, the Who. It was basically a “Best of Classic Rock” dance. They even did a mashup with Bon Jovi and the Scorpions ON THE SPOT.

Those DJ’s got a good tip, let me say that much.

There’s also some good Christian rock music out there. I’m a huge Starfield fan, and they do some rock type stuff.

We did the same sort of thing for our wedding reception last year We gave our DJ a list of our favorite songs and asked him to play them in whatever order he wanted. It was a varied mix – from The Dillards “There Is A Time” (think Andy Griffith Show and the Darling family) through a lot of classic rock & roll from the 50’s through the 80’s – his generation and my generation. Lots of surfin’ music, Beatles, and miscellaneous songs we’ve enjoyed over the years. I like Van Halen, Boston, and some of Ozzy, so we tossed in some of that too

My husband’s sons, daughters-in-law, their friends, and my nieces and nephews LOVED it. We danced for hours and had a wonderful time (and a pretty good workout too, incidentally!) Yes, we had an open bar at the reception (he’s an American Legion and VFW member, so we had the reception at a Legion post). Everybody who drank had the good sense to drink in moderation, so a fun time was had by all, and we were able to donate the extra food to a homeless shelter.

As far as what we do for fun… well… lots of things. Our TV is usually tuned to either the news, baseball, football, the DIY network, or Food Network. My husband likes to build things and work on classic cars and my motorcycle. (I tried to learn to ride, but three broken bones later, I realized I wasn’t cut out to be a biker chick! So we’re going to sell the bike after we spiff it up.)

I like to spin, knit, read, play in the dirt (i.e. garden), sew, collect clocks, various things… Several years ago I joined a local Gilbert & Sullivan operetta troupe, which is great clean fun, and it’s not unusual to have whole families in the cast. Often the youngsters will show up the grownups with their talent, while carrying on the great Savoyard tradition into the next generation!

Our idea of a fun date is to “take me out to the ball game”. We have a major league baseball team in town, for whom we root with great intensity , but we also like to book a room in the AAA farm team’s town about 75 miles away, book a hotel room and drive down for the night, and take in a couple of games. It costs a lot less than the major league tickets, there’s a great feel of cozy hometown camaraderie at the stadium, and we like to try to predict which players will get called up to the big leagues next.

So I would agree with previous posters that traditional Catholics do pretty much everything for fun! It all depends on what your particular interests and talents are.

Yes, been playing guitar since childhood. Learned playing classical. I just assume play the Blues when I fiddle around though. Don’t listen to as much Rock anymore but most definately grew up on it in the Blues/Rock era.

I love music, all kinds, for the most part,
and have a secret obsession with "heavy metal & pcyschedelic rock (Metallica, Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream, etc…)
I was quite the “head-banger” in my younger days!!

My tastes run a little more mellow now, but still varied to the extremes.
For example I have ‘Ave Maria’ by The Priests and ‘Panis Angelicus’ by Pavorotti, a huge selection of Billy Joel (LOVE HIM! :bigyikes: ),
selections from “The Wall”,
and a bunch of stuff by Chris Tomlin, Bebo Norman & Casting Crowns in my ipod

I went to a Catholic meetup group in my area the other week. I found it very uncomfortable. I guess I wanted to be around people that want to focus on Christ as much as I do. Instead it was just a mixer, with expensive drinks and appetizers.

I fear I’m becoming boring. Scariest part is I have no desire to change.
