What do Traditional/Orthodox Catholics Do for Fun Outside of Mass?

What will YOU be doing for fun at this stage in your life?

We do a lot of things for fun. Most of these activities involve our family. My husband and I belong to a Community Choir, we picnic, play music, sing at various events, eat out, and hang out with each other. What we do not do is make fun of people or laugh at the way they dress.

When I receive e-mail photos of Walmart Customers, I delete them without comment. I don’t appreciate them however.

What will YOU be doing for fun at this stage in your life?

I’m already very involved in all sorts of things (sometimes I’m too busy, actually), including:

Blogging
Sing in a choir (lots of concerts and other performances)
I go out to dinner, movies, plays. I like to check out different restaurants.
Watch certain TV shows with my kids on a weekly basis.
I do a lot of reading
Religious stuff including (visit lay order meetings, mass, vespers, and about to start a Bible study, hopefully)
Planning my vacation, which will probably be a cruise (I know)

All of the above are things that I love.

I usually have to scale back, not look for things to do.

Photography, writing on my web site (3 in total), being social with friends, watching movies.
I got a lot of reading to do as well and concider to become a deacon in 2-4 years time.

Flying my small plane, riding my bike with my wife, hiking in the mountains with my wife, chant projects for the Gregorian Institute, etc.

I work in IT too… and I too waste a lot of time on the 'puter.

Here at CAF I am not considered very “traditional”, but where I am from, my views would be considered “traditional”, so I figure I will answer anyway!

I have 2 jobs, so leisure time is something that I don’t have a lot of, but I am lucky that both of my jobs allow me to do things that I find “fun”. I work in the food service industry, as a food service director in a skilled nursing facility, and as a private chef. Cooking is one of my favorite things to do!!

I like spending time with family & friends, conversating, usually over coffee (I love my coffee! ) or a meal (Look up “foodie” in the dictionary and you’ll find my picture! )

I read a lot, I love music of most kinds, and dabble a little in singing and playing guitar & piano, albeit, not very well! :blushing:
I love to stay on top of current events and the political arena and I love to learn!
I was working on my Master’s in theology & pastoral studies, but I had to stop due to some financial issues. Hoping to start up again in the fall.

Hubby & I hike & fish, and love to explore old cemetaries.
We watch & discuss the news, and a lot of documentaries (hubby is a science/history/military geek).
We also watch a lot of tv & movies- all kinds, and usually have a livly discussion about whatever we are watching!

I plant a small garden every year and enjoy “diy” projects, crafting & writing.

I am involved a little bit in “parish life”, as I procure a lot of the food for our special events, and usually help out, as I have the proper certification required by our county.

A couple of years ago, I did the 19th Annotation of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.
One of the things that the Jesuits are known for is “finding God in all things”.
This attitude has helped my awareness of what activities are life-giving, and the ones that are draining, and have made me really consider how I want to spend my time now.:yup:

Me!! No not square dancing but Latin dancing like Bachata and Salsa!

I am huge horror and action movie fan. I’ve always loved films and I find something good in many of them regardless of their content. I had to admit though that much of the movies today including horror is just junk.

Didn’t they clean up because the teens switched to MMA, so McMahon is not trying to attract a younger audience? Like pre-pubescent boys? I know there was a time the WWE was just a sex show, I mean the divas were there basically as glorified strip club dancers. I miss the days of Ms. Elizabeth when she didn’t have to put on a bikini for men to take notice of her.

I grew up watching the attitude era, you know Stone cold and the Rock. Those were the good old days lol.

Same here. I stopped watching after The Rock left for Hollywood. But I guess I’m much older that I also remember the glory days of the 80s with Macho Man and a young Hulk Hogan.

Fun outside of Mass? What’s that?

I read a lot online and in hardcopy, walk the dogs, hike, camp, hunt, watch some TV (EWTN, Military Channel, occasionally Military History or truTV), listen to music, spend afternoons or evenings with family, etc. My wife is there for most of the above, which adds to the fun and merrymaking. We also spend about an hour each night reading Scripture and praying together, which I enjoy quite a lot. My Knights of Columbus Council keeps busy putting on events, which are also a lot of fun.

Let’s see now, what do I do outside of Mass? Teach people how to be safer drivers, spend more time on the Internut than I probably should, read a lot, practice a sense of humour that would probably see some of my Trad friends want to excommunicate me… Quite a balanced life, really!

I did on a regular basis until a couple of years ago when I had a baby. I love going out for drinks with friends and to the cinema.

I’m still trying to get a feel of how conservative Catholics feel about some things. For example, I have seen posts about TV’s not being allowed in some homes. So I thought I’d asked the more conservative Catholics on the board.

Many of these things are personal choices and a question of local culture (attitudes to drinking alcohol for example). The church does not prohibit watching TV, going to bars, drinking alcohol or dancing. Of course, the assumption is that we would not engage in anything sinful.

Today, a co-worker sent me one of those Walmart type of emails. I’m referring to the ones with pictures of people going to Walmart in all sorts of crazy attire. They are often quite funny.

I thought about passing it on to some of my trad friends, but then I wondered if they were too pious for those type of jokes.

Which got me thinking.

What do traditional Catholics do for fun outside of Mass, adoration, vigils etc?

Well, technically I don’t count, but…

Play sports, work out, watch sportscenter, watch movies and the Simpson’s, listen to music, spend lots of time here, hang out with friends, eat, etc.

Friday after morning Mass, I drove home in my suit blasting the Misfits and playing air drums at every single red light. That was fun.
