What do we do when there are too many people on the planet?

This will never happen. 7 billion people could live quite comfortably spread out through only a handful of US states.

It makes me wonder where all these people (140B) are going to stand during Judgment Day. Hopefully it’s an instantaneous event.

Well if a company spent the time and money to research it and NASA didn’t pay for the rights to share them that’s one thing.

This is a ridiculous thing to say. Apollo 11 alone cost $110+ million in 2018 dollars. That’s equal to the entire GDP of Morocco.

The technology simply wasn’t there, nor was the will. It took an incalculable amount of government resources to make space flight possible. No private company then or now could do what NASA did. Nor what the US government did in attracting (and in some cases rescuing or even kidnapping) the world’s best minds to make it happen. Private companies don’t have that sort of diplomatic clout, even if they had financial resources.

It’s one thing to prefer the private sector to the public. But space is one shining example of government gone right.

Yeah, I said the government needed to get it started. Once it was proven, the private sector could easily have improved on it faster and more efficiently. Musk just put a pay load in space for far cheaper than NASA can. NASA served it’s purpose in proving the concept, now it’s the market’s time to make it affordable and routine.

Just googled about population growth. It’s estimated that the earth can sustain 10B people, which we are likely to reach by 2050, and 11B by 2100. We could support more if we switch to a vegetarian diet, since growth of animal-based foods are significantly more resource intensive.

Colonization of space will never solve this problem. We need an earth-like atmosphere to sustain large numbers of people and adequate food production, and Mars is too small to hold onto an atmosphere even if we could create one. Then there’s the problem of how to get billions of people from earth to another planet.

Realistically some huge pandemic will come along and wipe out a huge portion of the human population long before we had to worry about it.

The thing is, evolution has trained women to be ‘in the mood’ at the time of most likely conception, and men can oick up on the pheremones indicating this… In thought, simple… In action, we will have to break the habits of a few millenia in a few hundred years…

I like stuff like that. Yeah i have been reading articles here and there. Looks promising.

However, it’s unlikely you could ever get a flight cheap enough. Surely you would have to be rich?

I have never been in such a situation, but it certainly makes sense in an evolutionary sense…

Used to have to be rich just to own a car, a VCR, a TV, etc.

It’ll start off expensive and get cheaper.

When you come up with another way to get folks to not have kids besides “No sex, ever!”, let me know. Seriously.
No sex while fertile? Do I win the prize?
You violated “workable”.

As someone who has also tried it, vaginal temperature readings, cervical mucus viscosity comparisons and the fact that literally any old thing can throw it off (like certain antibiotics, as an example) makes it a less than ideal solution.

As a poster in that thread pointed out, she found using it to be a great way to get pregnant.

Airplanes, and even drones, used to be considered military only technology… look where we are now!

If you don’t move them off-planet (and we’ll never be able to), then the earth’s population will continue to outstrip its ability to sustain human life after 2050. Whatever we do has to involve halting population growth on earth. A 1918-style flu ought to do it. There were stories of people getting on the NYC subway at one end of the city and dropping dead before they reached the other end. Streets became deserted, like on 9/11 in Manhattan. A group of apparently healthy women got together for a card game, each wearing a six-layer face mask. Half the women were dead by the next day. People starved to death in their homes because they could no longer shop while sick, and no one would take food to them.
