What do you suppose was God's purpose for creating the dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs were part a of an ecosystem that today is the main source of energy, namely fossil fuels; without fossil fuels the modern era would have never come to be.

I don’t think it was dinosaurs but rather plant material (extinct species of trees with shallow root systems) that was trapped in a non aerobic environment where they could not decompose and therefore the cellular energy due to photosynthesis remained intact. Over time sedimentation pressures caused this matter to be compressed into coal but the energy remained intact. This is the same energy that is used up in coal and its petroleum derivatives.

Some of the dinosaurs were carnivores, and ate the smaller, less defensive herbivores.
Yes. Some humans are herbivores and some omnivores… .
And such is the way of most? of life - … Eating…

The same thing could be asked about any and all extinct species. Scientists tell us at one point the sea was full of trilobites. Well, something good came out of it all. God works in mysterious ways.

I think you’re not far off. I saw a great book a while back, I believe it may have been “A Travel Guide to Heaven” or something similar. It basically said, “maybe God made the dinosaurs so that 300 million years later little children would look at their bones in museums and be amazed.” That’s good enough for me.

I’m also a reminded of the closing lines from War of the Worlds. I’m paraphrasing a bit, but the line is that “in the end, mankind was saved, after all his weapons had failed him, by the tiniest of creatures, bacteria, which God, in His infinite wisdom, had seen fit to place upon the earth.”

…and so it is with the dinosaurs. We don’t really know the reason, but whatever it was, it was a great one.

Fun! G-d was a lot younger then, and He wanted creatures to play with.

He enjoyed doing it. Creating dinosaurs was probably fun.

For my five-year-old nephew to be able to show off words that he can say that I can’t.

The Whovian in me wants to say it’s all timey wimey. Maybe the redeemed, in eternity, will be given the grace of time travel… and will be able to go back and experience the dinosaurs and their majesty. After all, isnt eternity just a single eternal “now”? Our Lady is spiritually with millions of Catholics in different times and places… she now transcends time. That makes me think.

It’s worth noting that, from the animal point’s of view, it wouldn’t be pretty for its Creator to put it in the “killing machine” that is natural selection for “the rest of Creation to unfold”.

I don’t think why dinosaurs is even a question – dinosaurs are cool.
Now, why scorpions? THAT’S a question!

It’s all wrapped up in wisdom, reason and worthwhile purpose. God didn’t put anything into a “killing machine”. He put certain natural, evolutionary processes in place and has allowed them to operate as he has designed and intended for them to operate. Sometimes, under some circumstances, he does intervene – that’s called Providence. But, for the most part, he allows his Creation to unfold and operate as he made it to do so.
