What do you think about the New Roseanne TV show?

Good…

But that isn’t my point. You’re going right to the ethical issue, which is obvious to me. What isn’t obvious to me is the psychology.

Comedians make fun of plenty of tragedies – sometimes appropriately and sometimes not. I’m going to the ethical issue because it has bearing (at least for me) on the reboot of the show. The psychology behind the choice likely doesn’t.

Fair enough. I don’t plan on watching either, for ethical reasons. I watched the first episode and that was enough. I’m not sure why conservatives think it’s a “win”. To me, it’s just sad.

But that other poster mentioned the old series where she did the Nazi thing… and I thought I’d chime in. It’s something I’ve noticed through decades. And I still don’t understand it.

I guess maybe it’s a “win” because there’s a significant character who approves of Trump on TV? Maybe that’s enough of an oddity in Hollywood? I think she did the Nazi thing after the original series had ended. Maybe 9 or 10 years ago.

A couple of things; Charlie Chaplin wasn’t Jewish, though it was a common misconception that he was. Indeed when asked whether he was he said “I have not that good fortune.” He was a great friend of the Jewish community during a severely terrible time.

In terms of Jewish comedians taking on topics such as the Nazis I’d suggest checking this video out as it examines the idea from a film studies perspective really well; Mel Brooks, The Producers and the Ethics of Satire about N@zis - YouTube

Huh… I stand corrected then.

Thanks, I’ll watch that vid now.

edit: I didn’t realize the source was the “Nostalgia Chick”. She’s kind of infamous. But the video is informative on it’s own.

As a child born in 1989 shows such as this depicted my life and I loved them. Roseanne, home improvement, Dinosaurs! It was all relatable and with the time. My dad was Tim Allen/Mr. Fix it. My mom was Roseanne hard ass working woman. Everything they and their spouses did was for their kids and even through hard times they stayed together. Something my parents didn’t do.
How do I feel about Roseanne coming back as a still married hard working woman is comparable to how I felt when Tim Allens show hit the air. If it’s relatable and conservative and popular aired to anentire nation God Bless em.

I never saw the Nazi thing, but she’s Jewish… I think maybe this was probably more of a Charlie Chaplin thing, when he dressed up as Hitler (he’s also Jewish).
I thought the same as you. Roseanne is a practicing Jew. When she married Tom Arnold, she wouldn’t even use his last name until he converted to Judaism. I think she’s pretty serious about her religion. I agree that it was a kind of coping device.

IT’S STILL REAL TO ME DARNIT!
LOL Since it was never real, it’s just as real as it always was, if that makes any sense.

It’s great entertainment, and the wrestlers are in much better shape than earlier ones, and, for the most part, no steroids! So I plan on enjoying WrestleMania to the max on Sunday! 🙂

I know she’s Jewish. The magazine allegedly did this to see if the holocaust was ever funny. Since the mag went out of business I’m thinking the answer is no. There are somethings that are so horrific that nothing will make them funny.
Nothing will ever make the Holocaust anything but one of humanity’s greatest tragedies. However, people often use humor to combat tragedy. Sometimes it backfires on them, like this did and like Kathy Griffin’s drawing of Trump. Notice she’s not been around much since then. I heartily dislike Trump (not a HRC supporter, either), and even I think Griffin went way too far.

I said she was dressed like a Nazi. She was wearing an SS uniform. And did you miss the oven part and burnt cookies? Do I need to spell out what that is referring to?

I know she’s Jewish.
I’m a WWII buff and two granddads were WWII vets.

That’s totally not cool.

Charlie Chaplin wasn’t Jewish. His stepfather and half brother were Jewish. Maybe that’s what you were thinking of?

Yeah, someone corrected me on that earlier somewhere? I don’t know why I thought that.

I wanted to add, Charlie’s Chaplin was in the Great Dictator, where he played a duo role as Adenoid Hinkle (a parody of Hitler) and a Jewish shop keeper.

It’s a very good film. It’s nothing like Barr’s classless photographs,
