What do you think of climate change?

Yeah…there’s also the fact that a 16 year-old girl who has been diagnosed as being/having had OCD, past issues of deep depression and Asperger Syndrome and has no scientific background is being trotted out to scold people about science.

personally don’t see a problem (w/ the science that I’ve seen greta talk about),… actually just learned by googling that one of the most brilliant physicists of all time (Paul Dirac) had autism (which is related to asperger’s syndrome)

IOW greta’s extreme focus on a specific topic of interest (i.e. climate change science) is one of the known asperger’s syndrome symptoms,… which brings up an interesting question about extreme focus on specific topics of interest

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

having been interested in the physics of climate change for decades have to say its refreshing to have a non-scientist (celebrity of sorts) bring attention to actual science

…as opposes to various nonsensical opinions about the issue by politicians and partisan pundits

DISCLOSURE: I’ve never taken a formal psychology class,… but just an educated guess that POTUS (i.e. the self described stable genius) who has extreme fixations on some topics, might be classified by his niece (i.e. mary trump w/ a Ph.D in psychology) as having some form of asperger’s syndrome along w/ some other abnormal psychological conditions

Can somebody define science?
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

personally science to me is looking for the cause of some effect, which can described by math (for example)

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

actually was about eight or so and my dad would bring me to the range to shoot a 22 so I’d get a feel for the physics, then he would show me the basic math

Thunberg is a marketing tool. Debating the science involved with her would be like debating the topic with Ronald McDonald. She has, in fact, been challenged to debate the topic by the 19 yo German girl (Naomi Seibt) who has emerged as the anti-Greta. The greens no doubt view that prospect with all the enthusiasm the Democrats view a debate between Biden and Trump.

Thunberg is a marketing tool. Debating the science involved with her would be like debating the topic with Ronald McDonald.
In fact Thunberg herself has not put herself forward as an expert in the technical fields involved. What she has done is echo the views of expert climatologists. If you want to debate anyone, debate those expert climatologists, not Greta.
She has, in fact, been challenged to debate the topic by…
…because it is a lot easier to debate a teenagers than it is to debate real experts.

debating science like with ronald mc donald,… deja vu

anyway thank god for greta who at least echos the hard science AND not a bunch of nonsensical
opinions about the issue by politicians and partisan pundits

then there is
the random trivia that I’ve leaned in the course of this thread
about a supposed upcoming ice age era, or the lies of
a guy who is a lobbyist for big petrochemical companies (who is not a man who stands behind his words!!)
truth be told not all chaff is total nonsense (but its use sure is)
“scientifically speaking,… moist air is lighter than dry air,…” NO-DUH
etc., etc., etc!!!

since greta at least mentions the hard science AND not a bunch of nonsense,… basically think what the pope said was pointing in the right direction
During Pope Francis’ Aug. 21 weekly general audience, Clelia Manfellotti, a 10-year-old girl from Naples diagnosed with autism, walked up the steps to where the pope was sitting.

The pope told his security detail to "let her be. God speaks" through children, prompting the crowd to erupt in applause.

bottom line the attitude toward climate change between greta and deniers like TRUMP is dramatically different,…fact is greta confronts the difficult issue head on

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

whereas deniers like TRUMP bury their heads in the sand

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
The atmosphere of division my grandfather created in the Trump family is the water in which Donald has always swum, and division continues to benefit him at the expense of everybody else… Donald, who understands nothing about history, constitutional principles, geopolitics, diplomacy (or anything else, really) and was never pressed to demonstrate such knowledge, has evaluated all of this country’s alliances, and all of our social programs, solely through the prism of money

All she has done is echo the views expressed by the media. I seriously doubt she knows nearly as much about the topic as you or I.
…because it is a lot easier to debate a teenagers than it is to debate real experts.
If she has read what actual scientists have said, as opposed to merely reading what the media has said, then she should be capable of debating the topic, especially with another teenager. If she has not read up on the subject then why should anyone listen to her? She is simply the face of a campaign, like the new Colonel Sanders.

All she has done is echo the views expressed by the media. I seriously doubt she knows nearly as much about the topic as you or I.
And it so happens that the media echoes the view of the experts.
If she has read what actual scientists have said, as opposed to merely reading what the media has said, then she should be capable of debating the topic, especially with another teenager.
That would say more about the relative debating skills of the two teenagers in question and not much about the relative merits of the scientific case.
If she has not read up on the subject then why should anyone listen to her?
They shouldn’t. Not as a primary source, anyway.

And it so happens that the media echoes the view of the experts.
The media pushes whatever aligns with its agenda, which, on occasion will be the truth. This is not one of those occasions, which is why the media reports that global warming is causing more hurricanes, longer droughts…plagues, pestilence, and frogs. None of which is supported by actual data (I’m not sure about the frogs; like media stories, I just made that up).

Here’s another interesting story (at least to those of us who question AGW). There was an ice core pulled from Colle Gnifetti, a site on the border between Switzerland and Italy. In deciphering the temperatures indicated by the core they discovered time in the past when the temperatures increased (and decreased) far faster than in the 20th century. Since it is claimed that the modern temperature increase is unusual and unique, this is not exactly good news for those pushing that story.
The total range of the fast temperature swings is also quite interesting. For example, in the fifty years from 1190 to 1240, the temperature dropped by 2.3°C.

And the steepness of the natural warming trends is instructive. In 35 years, from 850 to 885, the temperature rose by 2.3°C.
Are the ice core temps accurate? Beats me. Is it interesting? For sure.

This one ice core can only indicate temperature trends in that one local area. It is well know that local trends can be more dramatic than global trends due to redistribution of wind and ocean currents patterns. And what is being claimed now is global trend.

This is very true, just as it is true of the other ice cores. Does this fact diminish the value of the others as well? Also, other than as a result of the heat island effect, I would be surprised to learn that there are locations where changing local conditions vary greatly from surrounding areas for a period of decades. Still, I’m sure there are any number of reasons to dismiss inconvenient evidence.

Just a reminder of what’s really driving the “climate change” effort.

Meteorologist and climate change activist Eric Holthaus: ‘The climate emergency isn’t about science, it’s about justice.’ (July, 2020)

AOC’s Chief-Of-Staff Saikat Chakrabarti: “The interesting thing about the Green New Deal,” he said, “is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all.” “Do you guys think of it as a climate thing?” “Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.

UN official Ottmar Edenhofer: “One must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy … One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is env. policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore.

Greta Thunberg: “The climate crisis is not just about the environment. It is a crisis of human rights, of justice, and of political will. Colonial, racist, and patriarchal systems of oppression have created and fueled it. We need to dismantle them all.

Greta Thunberg’s advisor, environmentalist George Monbiot explained in 2019 that in order to prevent “climate breakdown,” a complete change to our way of life has to occur:
We’ve got to go straight to the heart of capitalism and overthrow it,” Monbiot explained.

I’ve come to believe one big reason there is resistance to accepting man made climate change is happening (i.e. dismiss inconvenient evidence) is simply because of human nature
Why middle-aged men hate Greta Thunberg

One of the things that has bothered me for a while is why so many middle-aged men seem to hate Greta Thunberg. Suddenly, thanks to her speech to the United Nations, I know. They are already rowing with their teenage kids and don’t need another one on their case.

It was the furious, accusatory tone in which she chided her audience: “How dare you? You have stolen my dreams and my childhood.” Has not every parent had that clash,…

AND just an educated guess after reading "too much and never enough" that a great majority who to various degrees like TRUMP are unable to face various fears head on
Donald’s initial response to COVID-19 underscores his need to minimize negativity at all costs. Fear—the equivalent of weakness in our family—is as unacceptable to him now as it was when he was three years old. When Donald is in the most trouble, superlatives are no longer enough: both the situation and his reactions to it must be unique, even if absurd or nonsensical. On his watch, no hurricane has ever been as wet as Hurricane Maria. “Nobody could have predicted” a pandemic that his own Department of Health and Human Services was running simulations for just a few months before COVID-19 struck in Washington state. Why does he do this? Fear.

another big reason there is resistance to accepting man made climate change is due to the fact the issue is multifaceted and requires a deep understanding of various fields of hard science along w/ an understanding of math to asses risks

then there is the issue of being able to communicate complex ideas to others who mostly likely have little or no background in science or math AND truth be told most people are intimidated by the topics so they react by being offended by “intellectual elites”

because of zero education in psychology,… instead I use OODA loop analysis which I first learned about because of pilot training

since TRUMP like perhaps many others have gut feelings about subjects (they have no experience in), we see people profess some interesting things (w/ no basis in reality) this would be humorous were it not there are some real serious consequences,…

More of the same. Clearly inadequate scientific support just isn’t enough. Maybe they can get the rioters to add AGW to their BLM signs; the causes are equally atrocious.

The Trump administration must stop sidelining the CDC
28 JULY 2020

…Earlier this month, the administration of President Donald Trump chose to transfer responsibility for coronavirus data collection, management and sharing. This task, previously within the remit of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — the public-health agency respected around the globe for collecting and analysing disease-surveillance data — was handed to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This is the CDC’s parent institution, and its head, Alex Azar, is answerable to the president.

Climate change and COVID-19: The denial playbook is the same
JULY 31, 2020

From the start of the pandemic, scientists who spoke out about the increasing threat from COVID-19 were ignored and pushed out. The same thing has happened to climate scientists since the early days of the Trump administration. The mentality that climate change is a taboo subject has taken root so firmly that it filtered down from top-level political officials and is now enforced by lower-level career employees in scientific agencies.

for insight into why TRUMP is blind and deaf to science AND actively hindering various scientific inquires (i.e. full political mode), in "too much and never enough" Mary trump wrote
…Donald today is much as he was at three years old: incapable of growing, learning, or evolving, unable to regulate his emotions, moderate his responses, or take in and synthesize information.

Donald’s need for affirmation is so great that he doesn’t seem to notice that the largest group of his supporters are people he wouldn’t condescend to be seen with outside of a rally. His deep-seated insecurities have created in him a black hole of need that constantly requires the light of compliments that disappears as soon as he’s soaked it in. Nothing is ever enough.

essentially mary says her uncle “TRUMP” is acting out just like a big baby that does not want to give up his toy (which happens to be the political position of POTUS) and like a little kid he will focus on some things he wants grownups (i.e. voters) to notice,… simply because he want to distract grownups (i.e. voters) of some other thing

Battered by pandemic and economic collapse, do Americans have the capacity to care about the environment? Not so much, judging by a national poll we just conducted.

In a survey we at the Harris Poll conducted last December, American adults said climate change was the number one issue facing society. Today, it comes in second to last on a list of a dozen options, ahead of only overpopulation. Among Gen X men, in fact, more than third dismiss climate change as unimportant. COVID-19 and the recession have, of course, reordered priorities around the world. Still, the coronavirus didn’t elbow aside other issues as muscularly as it did climate change. (Incidentally, global warming is a bigger concern to retirement-age women than any other age group except millennial men.)

There are some bright spots for the environmental cause. Americans are shifting their diets away from meat. (Cattle for dairy and beef production is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases, accounting for approximately 15% of worldwide emissions.)
