Super Mom,

Thanks for the link! Regarding apparitions, though: I’ve heard a lot lately about apparitions of the Virgin Mary. People see apparitions almost every day, it seems. How do you know which ones are genuine and which ones are the result of a desire for attention, mental illness, or drugs? For instance, last semester I read a tract by Margery Kempe, an anchoress in the 16th (?) century who recorded apparitions of Jesus and Mary. She also claimed to have had sexual relations with Jesus as well as Satan. Many Christians at the time lauded her as one who was truly blessed to have seen such visions. Today, doctors have determined that she was suffering from severe schizophrenia. In other words, to what extent can “private revelations” be trusted?

God bless,

Chris
Chris, at EWTN’s Faith Q&A pages there’s an answer about Appraritions/Private Revelations. It’s a framed section of the Website, so there’s no unique Web address for that page. So, here’s how to get to that page from this message.
  1. To get to the main table of contents for Catholic Faith Q&A, click on this link (below):

the Answers to Frequently Asked Questions page appears
  1. At the **Answers to Frequently Asked Questions ** page, scroll down to and click on the link with the words:

the **Apparitions/Private Revelation ** page appears.

That is the page with the answer to your question.

Does that help?

Hi all! I only wear a scapular around my neck right now, although I used to wear an old rood prior to that. As a person (and it seems I’m in good company here!) who is praying to God to reveal my vocation, I feel that it is important to try to “live the life” even prior to becoming whatever it is I’m supposed to be. Now, if that makes any sense to anybody, I will be seriously impressed!!! :blessyou:

I wear a Brown Scapular (cloth) with a Miraculous Medal and a St Benedicts Jubilee Medal. I felt a special calling to wear the Scapular and get closer to Mary when we were about about to have our second child. As we were checking into the hospital I was reading a newspaper about some Marian Apparitions were taking place in Georgia.

I didn’t give special interest to the apparitions but I felt a real urge to get closer to the Mother of God. Well to make a long story short, my daughter is autistic. She’s a beautiful child and the peace I’ve felt through some tough times has been ‘helpful’ to say the least !!

I also have a special affinity for the Benedictines since we live only a couple of hours from Conception Abbey and I go there a couple of times a year for retreats. Ora et labora !

A Brown Scapular (that comes with a small Benedictine medal and crucifix) and a Miraculous Medal. I just started wearing the Scapular again about a year ago; it took a bit of getting used to and to keep it covered automatically calls for a certain amount of modesty. 🙂 The Miraculous Medal came as a gift from local nuns; I read a little bit about it and I think it’s a lovely sacramental.

I used to wear a small Miraculous Medal and Crucifix, did for about 10 years. Now I have a small 4 way medal that I wear instead…it reminds me daily of who I am and the sacrifice made for me, as well as my devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Peace…

One thing I hate about most polls, is that they limit the choises so that one CAN NOT answer accuratly  ; but they are still interesting. 😉

Under my shirt, I wear a scapular with a St. joseph medal and a Miraculous medal on it, and, outside my shirt, I wear a crucifix and a medal of Our Lady Queen of Peace.
:blessyou:

Your doctor’s office should have one. 😉

As for a scapular, that’s what I wear. I have one that includes the St. Benedict medal, and I also have a devotion to St. Odilia and wear her medal.

I’d like to wear a nice necklace with a medal or cross, but I am allergic to metal, and break out in a rash. I can’t even wear a watch. In fact, even the small medals on the scapular I need to switch from front to back so they are not touching my skin for too long in the same spot.
No, a doctor’s office has “scalpels”, not “scapulas”.

Now as far as your being allergic to metal/medals, my mother was allergic to gold and her ear lobes would swell up if her earings had any gold in them at all. She ended up coating the earlobe studs with clear nail polish and then had no problem. She just had to make sure there was a coating of polish on them when she wore them.

If you think that is not up your alley you could try some of this spray plastic clear coat stuff you can buy in auto parts stores and try that although I don’t know how well that works. I do know the nail polish works.

God bless.

Brown Scapular which is looking kind of ratty now. I have resewn it a couple of times but I like it even though I am not much of a seamster. Can’t read the prayers on it anymore but I just say “Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, please protect me.” I think that covers it.

God bless.

I wear a medal of the Pieta that my grandmother brought me from Italy when I was 9 years old.

Miraculous Medal
& Relic Medal of Saint Philomena
& Lamb of God (AGNES DEI) medal

I wear a slightly worn silver-coloured crucifix on a black leather cord… I used to wear a Miraculous Medal on a blue cord (I’m in the Militia Immaculatae), but it fell off the cord and I never found it. Soon I’ll begin wearing the Green Scapular, as soon as it comes in the post. I at one time also wore St Clare and St Therese medals, but took them off because all those cords were becoming tangled, and have since lost them… 😦

Hi Chris,

we are never required to believe in “private revelation” and I personally think we should give no notice to the ones the church has not approved of. The one you cite above sounds very suspect to me. You must judge them by their fruits, some one claiming sexual relations with Jesus and the evil one sounds like rotten fruit to me.

Hi Folks!
I wear a Miraculous medal given to me by my parents when I made my First Holy Communion in 1978. I also wear a crucifix that I used to wear when I served Mass from 1978 until 1995. Finally I have been wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel since July 16th 2002.
I was enrolled in the Brown Scapular on the Feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel 2002 after finishing the 33 day consecration to Jesus through Mary. In August I started getting slight pains in my back and legs, by September they were worse. Finally I could no longer teach without having to sit down. I never sit down when I teach!!!
Anyway towards the end of September 2002 they discovered an 8cmx7cm cancerous tumour in my lymph nodes between the bladder and kidney. Severs chemo followed until Christmas and they had hoped to reduce the tumor to about 3cm. My first scan after treatment showed no trace what so ever not even scar tissue. It is the same to this day. I had a scan yesterday and the Doctor told me I am cancer free. not a trace of cancer in you he said!!
It is a** mark** of love towards Mary and a sign of Mary’s pledge to watch over us. To me my scapular is my prayer “Mother! Behold your Son”, and from Mary it is her reply "Son Behold your Mother."

AmandaPS:
Edit: I just read that one had to be enrolled prior to wearing a scapular? I guess I’ll hang mine up then.
Amanda…Why pick the wrong route at this stage? The enrolment can be carried out by any priest and takes only minutes. The enrolment formula can be downloaded from the net. Earthly minutes in exchange for Mary’s pledge of protection and guidance? Is that really a reason to hang it up? Go for it my friend.

I wear the following 24/7/365:
Two Miraculous medals on the same chain.
  • One is 10K gold, large, and belonged to my late Aunt.
  • The other is small, tin, I believe, and acquired at the National Shrine of the Miraculous medal in Perryville, MO earlier this year.
I wear the following only during waking hours, mainly because they get tangled up so badly when I sleep:
  • Brown Scapular of OL of Mt. Carmel
  • St. Benedict Crucifix, Infant of Prague, Bl. Kateri Tekakwitha, Bl. Brother Andre/St. Joseph, and St. Joseph holding the infant Jesus, all on the same chain.

Other than my wedding ring - the only jewelry I wear is a crucifix and a miraculous medal. My husband wears his cursillo cross and a miraculous medal.

I wear a Miracilous Medal. I got it when I was in High School (50’s). I have a roasry in my pocket, and a medal of St. Teresa of Clacutta on my key chain.
The medal is black with tarnish, but I’ve gone through a couple of chains. The rosary is new. I’ve worn out some, lost others.I received the St. Teresa medal from one of her sisters after she returned from Rome.

I’d have to agree, which is why I asked my original question. Also, Super Mom: the account is a published work (we read it in English), and I found a few online accounts if you want to check them out. I was wrong, however, about two significant details: 1) The anchoress’ name was Julian of Norwich, not Margery Kempe. Margery was more of a pilgrim who left her husband to travel to different countries, all while experiencing visions similar to those of Julian. 2) Contrary to what I said earlier, the Church didn’t support Julian. Apparently, her supporters were merely fellow Christians who were influenced by her piety. Anyways, thank you both for the helpful information! 🙂

God bless,

Chris

I ware a scapular medal, and a metal of St Joseph. These things reminde me of the family of God. Mary, mother of God, Joseph, the most famous step-father in history, and a young boy who grows up and changes the world with his obedience to his father, God.

I marked scapular, because I wear that everyday. I also frequently wear a beautiful miraculous medal (it is a wonderful conversation starter and causes many opportunties for me to talk about the Blessed Mother!). I mix it up though, depending on what I’m wearing/doing. I alternate the miraculous medal with several crosses, a silver shield that has a verse engraved on the back (“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9b) and a silver replica of a labyrinth from our local retreat house.

I forgot - I also have a medal of St. Kevin attached to my scapular. He is the patron to avoid temptation. I quit smoking almost cold turkey praying daily to St. Kevin - that was nearly 4 smoke-free years ago now!
