What Hand Missal WIll You Be Purchasing?

With the introduction of the new missal for Mass in the Ordinary Form, those of us who use personal hand missals will be making a purchase soon.

I was wondering which hand missal you will be purchasing? Also why?

The three major missals available in the United States are:
  • The Saint Joseph Missal (Catholic Book Publishing Co.): 3 vols.
  • Daily Roman Missal (Midwest Theological Forum/Our Sunday Visitor): 1 vol.
  • Sunday/Weekday Missal (Pauline Press): 2 vols.
I currently own both the Saint Joseph and the one from Pauline for the current Mass. I’m still on the fence about which one to buy. I am leaning toward the one from MTF because it includes Latin text for when I go to the OF in Latin.

I did visit a Pauline store and one of the nuns said that their new missal will be thinner and include color pictures in some way. I also enjoy the Saint Joseph because of its smaller size (being divided into three volumes helps).

All have their drawbacks and all have their attractive points.

I’m left-handed so I will be purchasing a left hand missal as soon as they come out. I currently have a right hand one and it’s difficult to use because everything is upside down.
 
I haven’t decided yet, so I didn’t vote. I have the current ordinary form St. Joseph missal, the three volume, zipper cover set, and I paid a pretty penny for that! I do like the format, however, you can zip the covers shut so that your novena leaflets, holy cards, etc. are secure and not getting messy in your purse or pocket. The size is pretty nice in terms of portability, and I like the fine art color plates, they are very familiar to me from Mom’s old St. Joseph Daily Missal (the Tridentine version.) If they’re keeping that format, which it looks like they are, I might get that when I win the parish 50-50—LOL!

FWIW, the Latin one isn’t changing. That will remain the Tridentine Mass, and those readings seem to follow an annual cycle instead of the three year Sunday/two year weekday that the English Mass follows (in the United States.) So getting a Latin-English one won’t be helpful for ordinary form Mass.

I’m seriously considering getting the holy card sized set of new responses, putting them in the current missal, and leaving it at that for the major prayers. I think I can manage “and with your spirit” on my own!
 
I don’t think they publish a permanent hand missal for Canada and the US edition’s readings would be in the wrong translation.

Guess I’ll make do with my annual Novalis-published Sunday Missal. It only costs $5 if I purchase it from the parish and I’ll only have to buy one for as long as it takes me to learn the responses by heart.

Ah, but you forget that the language of the Ordinary Form is ALSO Latin. While vernacular languages are permitted, they all remain translations of the standard Latin version… hence the need for a new translation in the first place. Although it is somewhat uncommon to find, there are plenty of places that offer the Ordinary Form of the Mass in Latin as well (especially in parishes that are multi-ethnic, it makes more sense than offering Mass in four or five vernaculars every Sunday).
 
I don’t use a missal at Mass so I won’t be purchasing one. I almost have all the revised prayers memorized but we are putting cards in the pews to help people learn them.
 
All I’ve bought is the Magnificat Roman Missal Companion. I like it. 👍
 
Is there a new St. Joseph Missal available that corresponds to the new english translation? I’ve been trying to find it.

Thanks for the MTF info. It will indeed be helpful when I attend an OF that’s other than in English.

I asked at a Catholic bookstore. They said that new missals can’t be released until November. I was told that there will be a new Saint Joseph edition.
 
i also have heard that the new Missals will not be released until November. i am glad that i saw this thread though because now i will have to decide which one i want to purchase. i would like to have one that zips to keep prayer cards, etc. in also.
i live in a small town, so i hope that the gift shop in our church might have a selection that we can look at.
 
I probably won’t be buying new hand missals. The scripture reading won’t be changing, and that’s what I use missals for. I’ll be able to commit the new responses to memory quickly enough; no need to spend $$$ for three new missals just for the responses.

I am not going to buy another hard cover permanent missal for a while, since everytime I do either they make a ton of corrections, or there are more changes, and a new edition comes out the next month.

I will rely on the Sunday St Joseph missalette from Catholic book pub, the annual, which I buy for catechists, RCIA and confirmation candidates each year, and Magnificat or Word Among us for daily Mass.
 
I voted “other”. I subscribe to MAGNIFICAT magazine, and that has everything I need. The Ordinary is given in both English and Latin, and it includes all the proper readings and prayers.:coffeeread:

And soon the Large Print edition will be published:dancing:
 
Daily Roman Missal. I like only having to keep track of one volume. I have already pre-orderd my copy
 
Well, for the last 40 years all we’ve ever seen is the OCP pew missalette. I can’t see this changing for a long time. 😦
