I was so pleased with our pastor when he took the opportunity at a mass where children were making their first communion to have the children repeat what they learned about the Eucharist–that they were about to receive Jesus.

I was even more pleased when another pastor, who is not our regular pastor, talked the entire homily about the Real Presence in the Eucharist. This was on the feast of Corpus Christi. He stated that is why he became a Catholic and a priest. He was raised baptist, I think.
Cradle -

I am so jealous (whoops that’s a sin isn’t it :o ). I wish we could have that kind of reverence for the Holy Eucharist in my hometown!

God Bless!

:crying: Why can’t we get a pastor like yours? I was at my former parish (which I still attend from time to time cause it’s 2 minutes away) for first communion Mass. The pastor didn’t mention one word about the Real Presence, but rather told all the poor second graders about how they were “really Catholic” now, and told the story of 7 martyrs in China who died for their faith! Of all the things you want to tell children “Hey, you’re Catholic, maybe you can die too!!”.

🙂 Hi:

I have heard them all — at a couple of churches in NH. The church I teach CCD at (but don’t attend now) I heard all type of Heresy …

So much to say - there are good churches and there are bad churches. And we must pray to the Holy Spirit that he leads us the the RIGHT (GOOD) Church!

:amen:

  1. The homily is part of the Liturgy and is strongly recommended,63 for it is necessary for the nurturing of the Christian life. It should be an exposition of some aspect of the readings from Sacred Scripture or of another text from the Ordinary or from the Proper of the Mass of the day and should take into account both the mystery being celebrated and the particular needs of the listeners.64
usccb.org/liturgy/current/chapter2.htm

How many readings relate to contraception, same-sex marriages, confession and mortal sin, apologetics, just war theory, Marian devotions?

The purpose of the homily is not apologetics, not castigation, nor to get the congregation to vote Republican.

We are blessed to have an “orthodox” Indian priest at our parish. He has managed to alienate nearly half the congregation. Families which I knew through the parrish since I was a child now attend mass in the next town or they go to the Anglican church.

In light of the post regarding teaching from the pulpit (namely, hell being taught) I am just curious as to how many people have actually heard these things at their parish during the homily?

Or not heard these things? Or not heard other things?
All of the above and regularly. Also dressing properly, Instructions on how to receive properly, family responsibilities in teaching and living the faith etc. Our parish has a wonderful priest and we are blessed through his devotion to the Church and good teaching. Wonderful homilies every Sunday.

Father encourages Eucharistic Adoration, Divine Mercy Sunday and Confession the good old fashioned every week way.

Last Sunday we had a visiting priest from Arlington, VA. He also gave a wonderful homily. As we are no where near VA it was nice to hear a priest from there also who is dedicated and not afraid to preach the truth of the Gospels with excellant delivery style and great love.

peace be with you!

thanks be to God i was able to check all boxes. my parish is very blessed. we have 4, very holy priests who belong to the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. we have 4 Masses a day (3 English, 1 Spanish) 10 or 11 on Sundays and at every week day Mass we have Confessions. we also have Confession on Saturday for a while. all we need now is perpetual adoration. we have a few nights out of the week already…still working on the other nights. the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy is prayed after each Mass in front of Jesus who is exposed in the monstrance. our parish is truly blessed!

We have a pretty good priest at our parish. He regularly teaches on hot button topics. For example he recently gave a sermon on the election and while he didn’t name any names… oh wait he did. He talked about Senator Kerry and his total disregard for what the Catholic Church teaches. He got really fired up about this (Senator Kerry being Catholic and all), I was worried he was going to give himself a heart attack! Our priest is a big guy. The only possible downside to his homily was the fact that he made some people mad enough to walk out in the middle of it, and our priest stopped what he was saying to wave at them and wish them a good trip! I think we lost some Catholics that day. Hopefully they’ll return in God’s good time though.
I’d have to give my priest a thumbs up and tell him to keep up the good work! 👍

I have been very lucky with two very good pastors who are solid in their preaching.

God Bless

This Sunday’s Gospel - Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter replied “You are the Christ of God”

The deacon went on to say that Peter could NOT have possibly said this. A Jew in Jesus time would not have called Jesus “The Christ” but rather “the son of man”. 😦

The GIRM does direct priests to address the readings as you’ve pointed out, but in a way that relates them to our lives today which leaves room for some of the things you mention. (I’m guessing your priest didn’t actually tell anyone to vote Republican but addressed some moral issues on which Democrats and Republicans come out differently.) Although some orthodox priests tend to come across as a little too “by the book” for some, they may see it as teaching the Truth of the Church for the sake of the eternal salvation of their parishioners. In the end, this is probably more beneficial for the parish than the warm and fuzzy pastors who teach nothing save “how great it is that we’re all here together…” Jesus had disciples leave too…To attend another parish is a legitimate option, but to change religions because they don’t like a particular priest’s homilies makes it seem like they weren’t too anchored in their faith to begin with…

I remember one sermon our pastor gave concerning contraception. He said that if any married people were contracepting to stop. He also said that if anyone had children to go home after Mass and apologize to their children when they ask why don’t I have a brother or sister.

The rosary is said every Sunday morning at 8 a.m. mass.

Marion devotions are discussed and we also have novenas in our parish. 🙂

We used to hear all of the above when Father Ryan 👍 was at our Parish. He got moved to a parish out in the styx ( he loves it there!)

Now all we get is God is love. Love oneanother, be tolerant, Mary was not filled with grace until after …John did not baptize Jesus because what the Church doesn’t want you to know is the John was in jail so he couldn’t have done it…

All of them. I live in a Catholic paradise, and Homeschooling capital of the U.S. one of our priests is the Cure of Ars reincarnated. (<-- obviously not literally)
WHERE??

WOW.

::envy::

My Deacon preached on the loaves and fishes. Said that it would be obvous that all those people would not have left home without enough food. He said that the deeper meaning of the miraculous event was that Jesus taught them all to share.

So I reason that if they all had enough food to begin with, why were they sharing? Maybe they wanted variety?

I wonder what miracle will the modernists next attack.

I have grave concerns for my decon (I have since left). He tried to teach us three different versions of that gospel reading - which I feel TOTALLY DIMINISHES OUR LORD’S DIVINITY. He teaches all sorts of other un-catholic things. I remember being in a meeting for CCD teachers and the theme was the Eucharist. One teacher asked … what does the church teach - re; if she could accept THE LORD’S SUPPER at her Methodists mother’s church (so as not to offend her). This deacon said - I would … keep the peace. I almost had a heart attack. I couldn’t even raise my hand to say WHAT DOES THE CHURCH TEACH - not your opinon or what you woud do. I was flabbergasted!

I brought it to the attention of both the Pastorial Minister (told me I need to be more with the spirit of the law than the letter ) and the DRE … who really didn’t say much. I was appauled. We were inbetween priests since our pastor was caught stealing from the collections …   This Deacon emailed me saying let’s set up a meeting to talk about this … but I couldn’t be bothered.

I also brought up that there shouldn’t be ***SPIRITUAL DANCERS ***  dancing at Mass in front of the Altar and Tabanacle. Well - that too was Fruitless!

I am sick now just thinking about all this - and believe me … this is just the tip of the iceberg. WHERE ARE OUR SHEPARDS???

Our usual one from our pastor is that we are all members of the Body of Christ and that we are Christ to the world around us and that therefore we should all be nice and take Jesus to the world.

And we do get this tied into the Eucharist.

I think we rarely get the “controversial” Catholic teachings though.

Well, technically, Christ comes from the greek word for “annointed one”. I’m sure Peter would know what the term “annointed one” was, since that is what Messiah means. And he’s saying that the Jews would not have known what Messiah means?
Hmph.

As a shut-in I rely on EWTN radio for mass (normally everyday) and get good magisterium-loyal homilies (and got to check every box in the poll.)

Praise be to God for EWTN. 🙂

I am one of the lucky ones that happens to have an excellent and holy priest. I have heard him speak on everyone of those issues in the last month alone!! He is the kind of priest that people commute long distances just to hear him preach, a modern day John Vianney if you will!!
martino, Would you please tell me to which parish you are referring. I have children and grandchildren in the Atlanta area (western suburbs), and I would so appreciate a priest I could recommend. Is he the pastor or a new ordinand? (We, too, are getting great newly ordained priests in the St. Paul/Mpls area, but, of course, they remain only a few years in a given parish.)
