What I don't like about Catholics...as a Catholic.

To the OP/subject of the thread, I would be interested to know how this fits into the Non-Catholic Religions forum. I don’t know why we need a thread specifically for Catholics to complain about other Catholics. But if there were a need for such a thread, it seems like this would be the least appropriate place to put it. If you need to vent, a less permanent medium would perhaps be better, and certainly avoiding giving scandal to those outside the Church would seem wise.

What am I missing?

I guess you might have missed the thread, “Why I don’t like Catholics?” that is also in the Non-Catholic forum. Nicea325 posted the list of 20 inadequacies on that thread and then made this new thread but changed the heading. I’d say the difference between that thread and this one is that the wording “Why I don’t like Catholics?” tends to direct posters to judge the character of Catholics whereas this thread’s heading is more cautious in the wording and is more likely to direct posters to look at the behavior or actions. The other thread prompts posters to pass judgment on people and this thread prompts posters to make judgments about behavior. I would have thought all the Catholics here would have been behind Nicea325 and the posts would have been focused on finding solutions. Instead many seem to be irritated with Nicea325 for daring to publicly tell the truth.

What gives you the right to question any other persons claim to be a Catholic?
Aaaaahhhh…their attitudes and actions. And why are you so easily offended? What really shocks me is that most Catholics responding rarely mention anything about what I posted. Those are the facts and as I said,people usually get offended at the truth.Seems as though they could careless that those discrepancies happen day-in and day-out. You find it acceptable?

Problem is that people do not like to hear the truth. Look at their reactions? Offer no solutions,but instead get all irritated…no wonder why those issues continue.

Point of order, Mr. Chairman. I WAS at the beach a week ago tonight. Participated in Mass at Our Lady Star of the Seas, New Smyrna Beach, FL. Fr. John Murray celebrating. (good homily, by the way). Everybody in the building had shorts and sandals on. (Probably including Fr. Murray under his vestments). Nobody, that I saw, was dressed offensively given the beach scenario, and you can go in the most upscale restaurant in NSB dressed just the way I was. (Which I did, by the way. If you’re ever there, Spanish River Grill puts on a mean spread, albeit a bit pricey.The yuca encrusted grouper is to die for.)
 
Are there many Catholics that behave like this?

I went to Mass as a Child because my Mother dragged me there, I went to Mass as a teenager because if I didn’t I get my butt kicked, although always reverant in Church, ‘we’ made it a social thing to get together with friends.
After High school I went occasionally, after marriage I became Guilty of Crime #2, but add in Palm Sunday, and Ash Wednesday, I could never come home without palms or Ashes on my head. Shorts? On a hot summer day? as long as there not cut-offs, or hot pants can be proper attire. {Not for Lectors, and E.M’s, ministers, who serve as examples}

But that what’s got me where I am today, because of the foundations laid by others. I wasn’t clueless, I just did what I did til the message hit me right between the eyes and heart. God finally broke my stiff neck, and I began to see the light.

When the student was ready the Master appeared.

With all the religious/ ‘uppity’ Catholics around who pointed the finger at others, It probably kept me away longer. But the Holy Spirit drove me back… I got a future out of ill gotten past and bad habits.

There’s one more item (and probably more) Those who receive and leave, because they don’t think a Mass ought to be longer than 45 minutes, and those who leave because they think that got something better to do.

Mass is like any other celebration, There’s the before, during and after, they all count! That’s what community is about. I’d say at least 60% of the finger pointing Catholics wouldn’t give a guy/ gal in shorts the time of day, not to mention welcoming someone to the Church… you never know what a hello and handshake can mean to someone who feels alone and not worthy to be attending Church, after a long absence away.

Always be nice! The Catholic Church has always been a Church of attraction, not promotion.

I drive a trk, I was out east on L.I. waiting to drop a load of asphalt right next to a Church, I said wow! what an opportunity, I noticed there was a funeral going on in one church, and in the new building next door, I noticed two women at an open door, I asked if there was a chapel inside, the woman who worked there responded with a yes, BUT IT"S CLOSED" *
So I ask would it be okay to sit and pray for five minutes, and that I didn’t want to disturb the funeral next door, She replies, “I said it is closed” As I walked away, I apologized, and said to myself how very Catholic of you.

As far as not addressing your what I don’t like list" don’t be a finger pointer, don’t be a gossiper be a friend by setting a good example. We need more friends in Church. Set up a hospitality Sunday, meet and greet the community.

We lose people because weare not nice to people! Christ came to save the sinners, not the uppity, not the religious.

What I don’t like about some Catholics is having to argue about what we believe, seems even catholics can act like protestants.

Be honest did you make that list up by yourself? Or did someone sell you on it,
you have vigor don’t waste it on fruitlessness.

Not even the protestants can boast thier community as a whole is ‘perfect’.

But as Catholics we accept the difference in people, that’s why we are Catholics ‘universal’ viva la difference. The solution is to point out bad behavior, improper dress to the Pastor or priest, and let him/ them address it, if not in person, from the ambo.

Catholics @ Mass are not policeman, we there to receive absolution, hear the Gospel, receive a teaching, in preparing to receive… Jesus tells us,

Mat 5:22 But I say to you that every** one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; **whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire.

Mat 7:4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?

Mat 18:15 "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother…

Mat 18:17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

I suppose the next question is who is my brother?? He/she is the person you’re looking at with contempt, preparing to receive communion!

When i notice something inappropriate i try to look away, and if I still having a problem, I move my seat.

How glib, but the problem is with you, nobody makes you take offense.

We had two large Chapels, and
When space was short, we had Mass in the school gym, doesn’t make it less than a church, or less than Mass, people are still to act appropriately. but then people will be people. You can’t pick your family…there just there.

Mat 18:21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”

In ancient Jewish tradition after three offenses, a person was allowed some form of retaliation/ justice Peter doubles the number to make it an extraordinary forgiveness, Christ replies:

Mat 18:22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. which is saying always forgive the person next to you, no matter how he/she offends you.

Let’s talk about offense. It comes from the greek "Sacandali’ it means bait-stick,
it’s a trap, a box like trap with a stick holding the lid up and the bait.
You see the bait, you TAKE the bait, ingest the bait, and it becomes part of you, you own it.

Bottom line, nobody can offend you if you do not take the bait!
and what’s worse, is when you don’t take the person who set the trap, gets all the more frustrated… the devil can work on you even in prayer, even @ Mass, all you have to do is open the door, and see the bait.

Actually the Church is made up of Saints and sinners, for a divine purpose.

The ‘saints’ are there to be examples of Faith for the sinners, to lift them up, pull’em along. And the sinners are there to remind the saints of their humble beginnings in Christ. Ya can’t have a church without Both!

It is through our sin, that we can have compassion for those in sin.

I second that. I don’t understand the need to constantly complain about fellow Catholics when we get beat up on a daily basis by our secular society. I’d rather build each other up than tear each other done.

The reason people put people down is usually to exalt themselves.

I haven’t taken offense, putting a list of of what you don’t like oughtn’t offend anyone.
Books, nor lists change people, people change people with the help of Christ, criticism avails nothing toward the good.

We can tear down, or build up with a word. The pain of the heart made with a word can last a lifetime. How much more if we edify?

Martin Luther said in the early 16th century, “Society today, thinks that the person who has the word, the last gesture, the last blow is the victor, not so, the person who delivers the last word, the last gesture the last blow has to live with that the rest of their lives.”

you can’t take it back, and even with an apology, the receiver, will always remeber the pain caused in the heart, every time they see you!

It is not judgment,but observations which are facts.
Yeah, it’s kinda judgmental. These are observations that bug you, and clearly you think such things as unacceptable. Others see the same things and don’t dislike any or all of these. 🤷

It probably would have been better to say why they bug you and suggest how to correct them. 🙂
I would add to the list:

Under “fraternal correction”, “rebuking the sinner” and all that rot as an excuse to be offensive for their own pleasure and satisfaction rather than out of genuine concern for another’s spiritual welfare.

    14.Catholics who chew gum during Mass and receive Communion

    17.Catholic parents who want to rush their children through catechism
    18.Catholic parents who ask: Why does it take so long to prepare to receive Communion?

In spite of being a well catechised, daily Mass attender, frequent confession goer, I’m on your little list @no. 4 because I wear sandals all summer!🤷
