The examples I gave were my idea of zealous Christians. I’m checking into Catholicism.
Good.

And I gave you examples of non-zealous Catholics.

Extrapolate: zealous tennis player, zealous Christian, zealous Catholic…

You already knew the answer to your question, as I suspected. 🤷

Hi Apryl,

Go read it for yourself, Ruth, Mother of David’s father Jesse found and met Boaz, gathering the gleanings of his wheat, left behind for the widows as required under the Law. Book of Ruth, Chapter 2,

commentary:

“Please, let me go to the field, and glean heads of grain” : **Leviticus 19:9-10 **commanded farmers in Israel that they should not completely harvest their fields. **They were commanded/**U] to “cut corners” in harvesting, and always leave some behind. Also, if they happened to drop a bundle of grain, they were commanded to leave it on the ground and to not pick it up.
We are not under the Law, we are under Grace…we know what we can give, God knows our hearts… if we give less than we are able, well then we’ll have to deal with that @ the Judgement seat

Then you oughtn’t call it tithing, Is there a limit to what you can give? The poor give less, the rich could give more, no even the Jews today call it tithing, they sell by bidding for them in the synagogue.

We freely support the Church through our donations…

Obviously you know nothing about what tithing was, Find me anywhere in Acts or the Epistles, where the Christians are required to tithe?

you really ought to check out the subject before you speak on the subject.

the 10 % number comes out of the Protestant faiths!

Read Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy Scripture is open to interpretation through the Teaching Authority. For catholics it is the Magisterium, in the Old Testament( Hebrew Scriptures) It was the Law interpreted through those given and recognized as the authority!

In Judaism nor Catholicism there is no such thing as private interpretation of the Bible… there is no such thing (accept on rare occasions) as private revelation.

Tithing is a biblical term under the Law, Paul asked for collections for the laborers, and the poor.

God bless,
John

John,

Although I certainly agree that the old law has been thrown out, well most of it not the ten commandments, I would say the most people interpret this to mean don’t give diddly.

I am a protestant convert and I know what they give. I also now know what the Catholics give as I am the auditor for ALL of the denominations on my base.

I can tell you that more Catholics go to church, but they give FAR, Far, far, less. In any event it would be nice if people would give more.

In protestant churches 10% seems to be the minimum…or at least a target. Do you know any Catholics that give close to 10%. I honestly do not know a single one.

God Bless.

What is the problem? In my parish quite all children and many women and men wear sandals in summertime. Me too.
The priest is a friar and he wear sandals and often, in week days, flip-flops.
And just because everyone wears them does not make it the norm.

In my defence, can I just say it was the OP who started the finger-pointing? and since when has wearing sandals and not knowing about the Sanctuary lamp been “atrocities”? give me a break…
Ah no! It is not pointing fingers, they are called facts of reality and some simply get all offended when these topics are mentioned. Instead of offering solutions many people simply turn the table . Exactly as I stated before, cannot say anything today because people get all on the offensive. Geee…no wonder such concerns get worse.

Exactly.

When and where Jesus wore sandals and a robe, these garments were appropriate.

Showing up at Mass with filthy flip-flops (there is such a thing as NICE sandals), wrinkled shorts, and semi-obscene t-shirt may not be sinful, but what kind of respect does it display?

Um… I guess I missed this when it was first posted.

But not knowing about the Sanctuary lamp… yeah, that’s an ‘atrocity’. If you are in the Church, and have been brought into the fullness of the church, either through receiving your Reconciliation and First Holy Communion or by being a convert, you have had ample opportunity to learn about the Sanctuary lamp.🙂

If you are not of either of those two camps, others around you can see you and answer any and all questions, or point you to someone who can answer your questions. Some where along the way, any one who is old enough to be posting on these forums and who sees himself as a Catholic should know about the Sanctuary lamp and what it means.

If not, that is atrocious.

As for the sandals, I was thinking of this the other day: there are sandals… and there are sandals. I’m not good at posting images, but I’m in the mood to try.

Here are a few I found from Google Images, and I think that some would be ‘what? what’s the big deal about wearing sandals?’ and others will be very ‘Oh, well, that’s not appropriate to wear into any one’s worship service’

It’s an example of poor catechesis, not an atrocity.

  1. Catholics who never go to Mass
  2. Catholics who are trivial with their faith and believe that is what the church truly teaches
  3. Catholics who are E & C Catholics. Easter and Christmas Catholics only
  4. Catholics who wear shorts and sandals at Mass as if they are at the beach
  5. Catholic women who wear extra tight clothes and show a lot of cleavage
  6. Catholic parents who have no control over their young children during Mass
  7. Catholics who answer their cells phones during Mass, after being told to silence them.
  8. Catholics who receive Communion and split dodge in order to be at lunch or beat traffic
  9. Catholics who enroll their child(ren) for catechism, yet never attend Mass
  10. Catholics who never tithe because they believe it is not biblical
  11. Catholics who talk during Mass
  12. Catholics who do not show any reverence to the tabernacle
13.Catholics who are clueless why the sanctuary lamp (candle) is there
14.Catholics who chew gum during Mass and receive Communion
15.Catholics who have nothing to do with parish-life and yet demand what they want
16.Parents who want a quincernera (Sweet 15) but their daughter is not even baptized
17.Catholic parents who want to rush their children through catechism
18.Catholic parents who ask: Why does it take so long to prepare to receive Communion?
19.Catholic parents who ask: Why are you charging me for catechism?
  13. Catholic parents who believe the church should adjust to their own needs and beliefs
WHY IN THE HECK ARE YOU CATHOLIC?
A good friend of mine, who I spent over a year working on, trying to get her to go to church, no longer does so because she overheard someone say exactly the same kind of thing you are saying now. And I knew many people who, when trying to find faith, were disgusted and turned away by the dirty looks they’d get entering a church.

A couple of the things on your list, like talking during mass, are basic matters of respect - if not for God, then at least for other people. But most of those things are signs of someone struggling with their faith, or have a budding faith. Being condescending and dismissive of them damages this. What does scripture say about seeds sewn on the ground? That they need good soil. And as like all seeds, they need water, and sunlight - nurturing. What you’re doing, simply by making this list and posting it, is essentially declaring to these budding “seeds” that they should stop bothering to grow.

It’s just possible that someone that touchy would look for any reason to stop attending Mass. I don’t know.

Don’t blame the rules because people want to break them.

The way I hear it is, ‘The Lord knows my heart’ ??

As if that would be reassuring. If the Lord knows your heart, maybe you should be RUNNING for forgiveness! 👍
:sad_yes:
I think it would be a race we could all be in. I would be the leader:D

I really don’t think God would really Care. (only the obscent T-shirt now that would be a problem:D)

In our Church we sing ALL are WELCOME. I say just come, receive the Bread and Blood of Christ. Pray and ask for forgiveness and ask God to make us better People and ask the Holy Spirit to pour into our souls and help us to do Gods work.

And more important then all of this is when you leave take with you that Power given to you by the Holy Spirit through the Prayers and Eucharist and use it to do Gods work.

Flip flops or no Flip flops. God does not care if you do his work in flips or a suit as long as you do his work!!😃

Speaking of what you wear. Here is what I think is a good story.

I have gone to the same CC and Catholic School since I was born. I was born in this Church, had all the Sacraments, and even Marriage.

Now everyone knew me, and my Dad, Mom, Family etc. But it was a big Church so many just knew the faces, knew us together.

So anyway we always dressed up. Well this one Sunday my Husband and I were going on a bike run and did not have time to get changed, so went to Church in the Biker gear.

SO as we got off the bike this Man came over, not Old either about early 50’s and said I want to say I think it is great that you came to Church? My husband looked at eachother and were like OKAY:shrug:

Well you should have seen his face when it hit him who we were!😃 Goes to show you, do not judge a book by its cover.

I have gone to that CHurch LONG before that Man had, It was MY DAD who welcomed him years before.

Reminded me of the Biker Sticker. Jesus died for Bikers too!!😃

But you never know who you are siitting by, or who you are talking too. And I am sure God was just as pleased with me in my jeans and vest that day, as he is with me in my Dress. He knows my heart, and he knows who I am. And when I went for the Eucharist, I still got Served:D

It shows a lack of respect.

If you wouldn’t dress like that to a job interview or to a restaurant, why would you dress like that for Mass?

Because flip flops are all you can afford.
Because you’re homeless
Because your faith is weak, but budding, and you don’t know any better.
Because you feel closer to God wearing flip flops.

I’m sure if you sat down and thought about it instead of mindlessly passing judgment on others just because they’re different from you, you could figure out some other good reasons to wear flip flops yourself.

With God, lack of respect is in the mind and the heart, not on your feet.

Riiight.

Do not accuse me of ‘mindlessly passing judgment.’

The same people who drive to Mass in their BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, and Lexuses every week can’t afford better than filthy flip-flops and obscene t-shirts?

I am not speaking hypothetically. I see this every week. I am not speaking of the poor. Don’t play that ‘compassion’ card. I don’t care if your clothes come from Walmart or the parish free store. The poor wouldn’t be caught dead wearing what some of these Lexus owners wear.

These Lexus people would not be caught dead dressed like that at a job interview. So who do they respect more?

I believe that what you wear DOES reflect what’s in your mind and heart.

It’s not about your personal comfort. It’s about the great Sacrifice of the Mass.

I’ve said this before and I will stand by it: you might feel great wearing your knockabout clothes, but (all else being equal) it’s not about personal comfort and convenience, but respect.
