What in your opinion is specifically wrong with modern American Television?

What kind of demented mind comes up with stuff like that?
So many good books that have never been filmed, and that’s the best they can come up with? So many places in America that wait for their story to be told.
Back in the late 50s and early sixties, two writer/producers Stirling Silliphant and Herbert B. Leonard produced Naked City and Route 66.The stories (clearly written by one person and not a committee) are still, fifty years later, engrossing and adult. I’ve been catching up with these two shows on Hulu while exercising.
And I might add, Naked City was filmed in New York. And utilized many stage actors who would later become stars.

I never see too much gore. Closes was the TV show from the 90’s but that was long ago. Cable and standard TV doesn’t show a whole lot of gore. As for violence if you looks for shows that have it you will find it, otherwise it isn’t in your face as many seem to be saying.
 
I find it very difficult to follow the story line of the current hourly dramas. I use to laugh and tell people that I liked Burn Notice because the main character would narrate over a scene and tell the viewer what was going on. It helped a lot in watching that show.

Remember the old joke, ‘the butler did it’? Well today, on I can always guess who the bad guy is…,
  1. Whoever is wearing a cross, or invokes God in an positive reference.
  2. The criminal is never black, foreign, female, or gay.
  3. The new ‘butler’ is always the white-est, most conservative American male that appears in the story line.
  4. If someone from point #2 did commit the crime, it is only because someone from point #3 manipulated them into committing the crime.

Really? I know I have no hope of convincing you, so I will post this for the readers.
Lets start with American Horror Story A male heroin addict was violently raped by a creature with a spike-shaped appendage
Hotel, raping and torturing an already dead victim
Hannibal, a show about serial killers
Dexter, Golden Globe winning show about a serial killer.
Oz, Death by eating glass, crucifixion, eyes being gouged out, and sexual mutilation
Lets not forget to mention Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
It’s everywhere, it’s depraved and sick.
 
I had a few people convince me to give Walking Dead a try. Live human beings being graphically chowed down by the dead. A human cannibal cult group. A “dead” skull being graphically crushed with a pipe against the side of a boxcar.

In the past, I watched reruns for “my favorite scenes.” This stuff? What? “Hey, wasn’t it cool when Dexter cut that guy apart with a chainsaw?”

“TWD as the top show on both cable and broadcast among the 18-49s – for an impressive fourth season in a row.”

Unlike sex and language, graphic violence on television isn’t regulated by the FCC.

The anti-Christian and anti-Catholic nature of modern TV makes it very difficult to watch. Demonizing a group of people was very common in totalitarian countries. It plants in the minds of people that certain groups deserve no rights because they are ‘evil’. Although how they define that word today, I have no idea.

In ancient Rome throwing blind or retarded people into the arena, and laughing up a storm as they avoided the lions or fought each other to the death was certainly accepted.
Popularity is not how a Catholic is to view morality.

Because Americans still are prudish about their bodies. Think about it since breastfeeding in public is more taboo then wearing a slingshot bikini.

All you have listed are not network TV. They are on cable or DISH® and are already with warnings. Heck Dexter, Oz and Game of Thrones are on premium services meaning you have to pay for those channels to see them. Even since Dexter went syndication it went through heavy editing. TWD is on AMC and already has a warning. As it has been said if you don’t want to see it turn the channel.

Proud to be a prude. Modesty should be practiced in civil society. I never go to public beaches anymore. The last ad I saw with a model wearing a “bikini” showed the bottom being just millimeters away from being obscene. Lust is bad. There is a line.

I avoid looking at certain things as much as possible. The Catechism explains and encourages it.

"2521 Purity requires modesty, an integral part of temperance. Modesty protects the intimate center of the person. It means refusing to unveil what should remain hidden. It is ordered to chastity to whose sensitivity it bears witness. It guides how one looks at others and behaves toward them in conformity with the dignity of persons and their solidarity.

"2522 Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.

“2523 There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body. It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things. I refuse to go with the flow. I refuse to accept ‘radical individualism.’ Obedience helps me. What is pleasing to God needs to be on my mind.

TV caters to the lowest common denominator in society. TV is aimed at people who are “average” on their best day.

Guess the people who gave us shows like MythBusters or the NASA channel are sure aiming for the LCD.
 
The NASA channel, proudly watched by about 36 Americans.

See, smarm isn’t attractive when you get it back.

But I double down that mainstream US TV is aimed at the lowest common denominator of viewers.’
